I dont buy into the Tipp hype at all, they dont have any ball winners in half forward line. I think Cork will win Munster.
My Clare should give a good account of themselves.
Tipp have the talent but lack the drive to match KK. Cats at a canter again this year unfortunately. Starting to get a bit boring.
How many Tipp players would make the Kilkenney team for instance, ignoring goalie as generally KK goalies have nothing to do.
Padric Maher and a fit Lar, Noel McGrath at a push. Says it all.
Brendan Maher at midfield would.
Not on the last two years form, granted he was injured for most of lastseason.
But Fennelly and Rice are better hurlers than him.

But they had Liam Sheedy over them that season, who was a very astute manager.

Declan Ryan seems to lack tactical nous.
And they had the lad who works in UCG as his assistant. He was featured in the Sunday Times today. Apparently he was very influential as well. Tipp still have some very good players all the same. They just need to get the system right.

Eamonn O'Shea?? Thought me in UCG for 2 years, fierce clever and passionate about hurling. Ryan got the gig on the back of the 21s win, but probably needed to be a selector under Sheedy for a season.

They certainly do have good players, but no real ball winner from midfield up, bar a fit Lar.

Not in English language skills evidently!

Tipp have a major problem in the full back line right now...they are better than they showed today but have a lot of work to do. Don't thing there's totally unity in the camp from what I'm hearing either.

The Kerry/Tipp football game was turgid and nobody gained anything from it. Kerry will be a different animal in 2 weeks though down in Cork...

I fancy Cork to beat Kerry. Cork have some of the forwards that were injured last year back and that will make a real difference.

Kerry will get to an All Ireland semi through the back door.

Cork may well win, they will probably want to go through the front door rather than the qualifiers more than us. As for Kerry making a semi final...shur what bloody good is that?! Its all about the 3rd Sunday in September and winning Sam..anything else is a failure down here.

So, we've set up a GAA club in Geneva and had our second training last night. Interest seems strong and we're hoping to play our first match on Saturday week, against either Zurich or St Gallen. Anyone have any training tips on how to keep the training fun while still re-building the core skills? We don't have a coach so any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Side story; Zurich GAA Club was set up by a bunch of Swiss lads who spent a year in an Irish University, fell in love with hurling and brought back their own hurls and sliotars.

Drills for hurling or for football Zappa.

Have some decent hurling ones, football is an alien sport in Clare (except West Clare, but Im not sure they are human out there)

Zappa, you can e-mail a chap involved in Kilkenny hurling who will post you out a (large) manual on hurling drills, exercises etc with illustrations. I can pass on his e-mail if you like.

Unfortunately though, when you are starting out you really need to focus on repetitive drills that allow you to get the absolute basics down before you can move out to more interesting stuff.

Thanks, Turenne, but it really is just a football team right now. The issue that I can see us having is that some players played little GAA growing up and their interest may dwindle at the repitition, but we still require them to reach a base skill level to be able to play. Already, there seems to be a huge spread in ability in the club and the players who operated at a serious level are very noticeable. Bit of a balancing act.

http://www.dublingaagamesdevelopment.ie ... s/football

http://www.redhughsgaa.com/Drills_to_ImproveSkills.pdf

These are probably a bit advanced, a good drill for developing the skills, is "Stuck in the Mud", 2 teams in a grid, one team has the ball, one team doesn't, person who has the ball can't move and his players have to move to create the opening to get a handpass or footpass, defenders cant touch them but try and block etc.

Tailor the drills so that everyone improves at the same speed. Example is a drill where you solo from a to b. Some lads will fly through it and others won't be so quick. Let the faster lads do it on their weaker foot. It will slow them down, but also help them to imrove their weaker side. And everyone can do the drill together.

Maher got young hurler of the year two year ago, so I pretty sure he would have made it on their team for that year as he was savage, he was injured form pretty much all last season.

There isn't from what I have heard last year, draw around club rivalry or some such bullshit. This could be total bullshit as their team doctor told me. But something seems to be up on the field they ain't playing like a team at all, and it isn't as if they are a very old team either.

Zappa was just thinking about the club starting up again.

You can use the drills to develop the basic skills, but good auld game of backs and forwards, with a picky ref to stamp out bad habits from the start will go a long way

We've done backs and forwards both nights as it was one of the few drills we all remembered!!

We're more Leitrim than Kerry, but it's been good fun so far.

Like all the drills above are great and all but developing the ability to give and go with a handpass (or to handpass for that matter) and accurate point taking and simply clearing the ball will go far.

Best teams just do simple drills.

Remember coaching some newbie yanks in New York and they couldn't kick the ball, spent entrie sessions just teaching them how to kick the ball from their hands.

I remember sitting in departures at Dublin Airport with the All Ireland hurling final (Limerick V Kilkenny) on TV and the number of tourists from Germany and France watching the game and their fascination with the skill/speed of the game.

I'm not in the least bit surprised that other folk are interested in taking up the game.

Run them up and down mountains all evening and maybe a bit of backs and forwards for the last 5 minutes. You're not going to beat Zurich with "fun".

Zappa where are your team training?

Literally thousands of GAA clubs around the world are totally dependant on the generosity of rugger clubs who let them use their pitches and facilities. And yet these same people are blindly loyal to the GAA back home who refuse point black to even consider letting other sports use their taxpayer funded facilities.

Sickening hypocrisy :x

In a public park right now but I've been requested by the lads to ask my rugby club if we can use their pitch for matches

Tbf, I completely agree with you regarding the opening up of GAA facilities and was very vocal on the topic when the issue of the use of Croke Park reared it's head during the re-building of Landsdowne.

The grounds are not owned by Rugger clubs but by the municipalities, and often a rent is payed like the other sports who use the grounds.

And in Ireland, considering the number of GAA people more tax payer money probably went into Rugby proportionally for Aviva than Croker.

That been said, if you knew anything about sport a lot of sports are using the local GAA facilities constantly.
