No, more clues. A Marlborough man who married a Miss SA.

The only Marlborough man from that era that I can remember in Ian Kirkpatrick's book is a guy called Sutherland.

I watched almost every match Canterbury played from 1965 to 1974 and this ugly bastard was there in most of them. By god, we loved the man

Was still playing in 1979 when I met him at Brixham rugby club in Devon. He was on a tour of the UK with the Cantabrians. Team that played Brixham as far as I remember: McCormick; Bernie Fraser, Joe Morgan, Duncan Robertson, Andy Jefferd; Kieran Keane, Lyn Davis; Bruce Thompson, Tane Norton, Kerry Tanner, Vance Stewart, Hamish MacDonald, Ian Kirkpatrick, Alex Wyllie, 'a young flyer'. On the bench: Sid Going, Bill Bush and others.

Bernie Fraser a guest on tour. 'He'll be an All Black," said Fergie. They were a bit surprised that the management had agreed to the squad being billeted with players' families in South Devon rather than a hotel. But at the end of the trip they said it was the best place they had been on tour. Players were light years apart in achievement and experience but they were from similar backgrounds - fishermen, farmers etc.

They won 27-9 I think, the score kept very respectable because Brixham 'treated' them to a trip on the lifeboat in the morning - the heavy swell did the rest.

This image is one that will always make me smile. I was working in Liverpool with a jock and 4 English lads from Kent. The Jock and myself watched it in my hotel room when a minute before the end, the 4 Kent lads strolled into the room and started taking the piss out of Wales losing. They had stopped watching and walked to my room, just before the Gibbs try. Needless to say, me and the Jock had the best laugh in the end.

Fergie played 1sts at Linwood for 22 years, Canterbury for 17 years and IIRC he never left the field injured.

He used to come in and coach the 1st/15s at my high school (Lincoln High), loved the man we did, even if he was a bit scary!

Was at this match, was either 1997 or 98 but I remember it clearly because this pic made front page of The Press the next day. Just a cute little Cantab kid saying it how it is.

Clearly a product of cousin shagging

Buggered if I can find an image for it, but a memento of, IMHO, rugby's finest day:

David Latta has just given away a penalty which Andrew Mehrtens will kick to retain the Ranfurly Shield.

It was almost full-time, Canterbury were hot on attack, a ruck formed 10m or so directly in front of the Otago posts, and Latta's hand could be clearly seen on the ball to slow it down.

He had put his body on the line throughout the match and his lads could taste the Shield.

Even though he was the oppo, we almost felt sorry for him

Almost
