2009 Vintage -Nice berry fruit, bit of pepper, meaty, pretty dry but still a touch young despite me laying it down for at least an hour

Had a punchy little Red from the Hawkes Bay last night to treat myself on my latest acquisition of pointless art. She was a little beaut... [/Euge]

Had the pleasure of visiting. Nice terrace where they do wine and olive oil tasting. Both are very good.

That is a splendid wine, one of the best producers in Rhone! :P

I like to mix a red and white together, it infuses the glass with a certain je ne sais quoi.

True. Dying to try the Cote-Rotie, over 40 Euro, prob worth it though.

Zappa, you could try it, it's a red with a touch of white thrown in.

Syrah and Viognier

Nice! I think there is some great value in Southern Rhone reds.

I've got 1/2 a case of the 2007 version of the below to get cracking on with:

Their Côte Rotie is also very good but is in the North of the Rhône valley.

In the South where Gigondas is grown, there's Lirac which is definitely cheaper but very good as well.

Image

You should taste the Domaine de la Mordorée, Dame Rousse, 11 to 14€ in France.

Image

Or their Reine des Bois which more expensive, closer to 20€. They added Mourvèdre to the Syrah and Grenache mix.

Lovely, let us know how you get on with that.
There is great value in Rhone wine.
Some of the Gigondas taste as good and some better than Chateauneuf du Pape.
For value against Oz and USA wine they are well ahead

Waitrose are still selling their regular CDR at 7.50 or something around there. Very good daily drinker at that price. If you like Cote Rotie, consider Yerring Valley - an Oz wine with the Rotie blend which I think retails at 10 or there abouts. I must admit, really good Rotie is probably as good as it gets for me.
Some of the Gigondas taste as good and some better than Chateauneuf du Pape.
The quality control in CdP is poor. Similarly Croze Hermitage can be pretty ropey. Hope you're is OK Flametop.

Thanks for that, yep like both North and South Rhone, see OP.

Liked the Chateau Mont Redon C du P but not the Lirac. Will keep an eye out for the ones you suggested. Add €5 to €10 more for prices in Ireland. :-(

I think so - it is from the clubs centenary stocks (although it might be '87 in fact)

I have had it at the Centenary dinner and I reckon I got outside a couple of bottles at least. It was very nice :)

1986 was a good year. Saint Juliens can be kept that long but the conservation conditions must be very good. You may have even to change the corks.

Went to wine tasting last night for the first time in ages. It was a "guess the grape" night, 4 whites and 4 reds. I got 5/8, though I did nail the producer and the vintage for 2 of them 8)

very restrained of you! I've ordered quick a few cases of white and fizz recently but left them in storage so I'm not tempted to quaff them too quickly

I did buy four cases! Down to 1 1/2 now.

I have already mentioned some Meursault and some Grant Burge, which we will be "vertically" tasting.

I have some nice Aloxe Corton and a dozen bottles of nectar I shall keep up my sleeve, in case Mitty strikes.

Just "putting some air in the bottle" now... very nice. Strong enough in flavour 14% alc but does not taste "hot"
Will see how it develops

Had a bottle of this last night:

2008 Matteo Correggia Roero

Bit of an underachieving DOCG considering its near neighbors but great producer and a really lovely wine.

How would it compare with something like Langhe Nebbiolo, Andrea Oberto?

It's a bit more finely structured, on the lighter side of medium-bodied. Still very savoury with great clarity and detail and some nice ripe, grainy nebbiolo tannins....really enjoyed it. Possibly a little truncated on the finish but a bloody nice drink.
