Fog, those pics with shipping containers on top of shops.

Where are they? Cashel Mall?

I think they are still deciding if the town hall is a repair or replace job.

It looks horrible.

Are they going to rebuild it properly, or is this some permanent god awful modern designer look?

I hope they keep the townhall.

What's the latest with the cathedral (rebuild with cardboard ?)

The people that own the Cathedral can't afford to fix it but they can't demolish it because too many people are against it. The people that want it restored of course don't want to put their hands in their pockets and front up with the hundreds of millions it would cost.

Maybe they should just turn it into a quake memorial kind of like the Hiroshima peace museum.

The restart mall? I like it.

But it's temporary and is supposed to be moved to other vacant sites as the current site gets rebuilt. There are a number of proposals for what will end up on the mall site, but I don't think the final decision has been made yet.

Cathedral's fate is still up in the air. Church want to demolish it, and managed to take what remained of the tower down, but have been blocked in the courts now, again with no final decision yet. The cardboard one is supposed be a temporary replacement and is on another site by Latimer square.

I don't think it's quite that simple. Lots of funding options have been mooted and there have been a wide variety of cost estimates. And didn't the council even offer to take it off their hands so they could save it?

Anyway, Bob's latest suggestion for it.

Quote:
In one of the most ambitious Christ Church Cathedral concepts yet, Bob Parker is calling for the historical ruins to be encased in a "crystalline structure" to serve as a reminder to the past.

The Christchurch Mayor has waded into the heated debate over the fate of the cathedral, but he comes armed with a bold vision.

He has suggested retaining as much of the cathedral's walls as possible, restoring the grand organ and pews, removing the cracked and weathered roof to expose the rafters and beams, and building a glass case over the ruins to open the building up to the stars.

The crystalline cloak would shield the cathedral from the elements but still allow church-goers to worship and visitors to wander through the remains of the original building.

His plan has been pitched to Anglican leaders but was yet to receive a price tag.

Parker envisaged stained glass windows suspended mid-air by wire, a glass structure being lit up from the inside at night and a rebuilt spire shooting out of the encasement to become the tallest point in the city.

What do you reckon of that new law about building heights in the CBD?

Seems silly to me.

I'm in 2 minds about it. I can sort of see what they want to achieve which I gather is try and avoid streets becoming long shady wind tunnels, and I understand why some folks may be afraid to live or work in taller buildings even though I think their fears are a bit silly. All the deaths were in smaller buildings afterall, although there was a bit of luck involved there in that no one was using the stairways that collasped at the time of the quake.

But I like the mix of heights as it creates a more interesting and pleasent skyline. Hopefully we will still end up with some of that as I think the new restrictions don't affect the sites that already had taller buildings and they have the right to replace like for like.

Lots of events get held in Hagley park. The beer festival has been one of my favorites. Lots of nice beers to try. Good food and live music.

I think the dates keep getting pushed back for much of the plans. Although there was something in the paper this morning about notices to aquire land for one of the projects going out. For the stadium bit I think, although that's probably years away.

Image

Most of the stadium site is already vacant land, but there are two heritage building at the edge of it that were quake strengthened and have successful businesses in them. A gallary and bar. Apparently they haven't recieved notices and the hope is that they will be incorproated into any designs.

Some of the little arts centre market is now housed in, you guessed it, some shipping containers.

Great pics RR. Looks like you might have lived dangerously and strayed to the wrong side of the container wall. ;)

That house on the cliff still looks like that today. It's been red zoned and no one will ever live in it again so I guess there is no hurry to remove it. Especially as it might be quite dangerous for the workers involved.

Just wondering but did you just stroll into their properties and start snapping away?

Well you can see some of them from the street, especially the first one which was the house I was looking for, but no. I think they must have been up for sale as the shots all appear to be from real estate sites. :)

I can only see is a text box slapped across the image which reads: "This image is Copyright. Unauthorized usage is Prohibited. Please contact us to purchase a Licence." (in bold red letters)

Yeah sorry, I'm getting that now as well. It looked lovely last night though!

Now I can see it again. Think it depends on your browser. I'm at home now using firefox instead at work on IE.

And a belated apology to guy. I somehow managed to post 2 pics you had already posted on page one, probably only moments after being wowed by them on viewing your posts. No idea how I managed that! Can I still blame quake brain?
