I stayed away from home for 11 years, returning in 2002 for a few weeks... I was amazed to find I remembered every pattern of light and shade on them. They define the place, for me at least.

I know what you mean, and I don't think we are alone in feeling that way.

I had a wonderful view of Castle Rock from my living room window. The pictures you put up in the Entertaining Pictures thread made me homesick, FOG -- these pictures are killing me. I really wanna make a trip home.

Great thread, btw.

You have to do it mate. There are flights everyday. :)

The original deans cottage survived the quakes, although it has a big crack through the chimney.

And a walk through the bush reserve is still a nice experience.

The giant rugby ball that was used to promote the world cup has found a new home. As has the giant wooden cup that was part of the fan zone. It's now a bar and Cafe in the CBD. It's kind of strange as it seems much bigger on the inside than it looks from outside.

Thanks J.

This clock tower is going to be repaired. They were talking about leaving one clock face frozen as a memorial (the clock stoped at the time of the quake), but have decided against it.

Image

This old building is also being saved.

Image

Unfortunately this one wasn't and is now a vacant lot.

The old council chambers is being repaired so will hopefully look like this again in the future (the stone tower parts collasped as did the main chamber).

So looks like this at the moment

And the new one is open for business again.

New bars have opened up where ever they could find space. This is the Volstead trading company which is in an old workshop in Riccarton. It has big metal rollor doors which they cover with some big curtains from an old theatre when they're closed. Have the Moa range of beers and and a changing range of other craft beer on tap. One of the silver linings of the quakes is that many bars have been able to set up free of their big brewery contracts which limited what they were allowed to sell.

The old Dux de Lux brewery, restuarant and bars is still closed with no word on when or if it will reopen. It was leased from the arts centre who are focusing on repairs to the rest of the centre at this stage.

Image

So they have opened a live music venue in an old workshop in Addington called Dux Live

Image

And a restuarant / bar in an old house in Riccarton called Dux Dine

The revival bar is built out of shipping containers on a vacant lot in Victoria street. Food is available from a kabab cart in the courtyard.

Smash Palace is another temporary bar on lot made vacant thanks to the quakes. Bar is an old bus with craft beer on tap. First pic was also in the OP.

Carlton country club (also posted earlier, but a different pic), was just across the road from it.

A temporary art gallery called the art box project taking advantage of some of the new space around the city. The straps holding the dinner table and chairs were all made out of quake support wrist bands.

And this is in the botanical gardens.

All the cranes in this shot were taking buildings down rather than putting them up.

To be fair, that pics is from before the quakes really made it shitty.

C1 Expresso is making a rooftop vinyard. Has only been open for special events so far though, so not sure when it will be finished.

My wife and I stopped in at the Port Hole when we went to Lyttleton last November, fantastic little bar! Very friendly place. Also had a few at the Wunderbar across the road.

Good times.
