Yep. Name was Bruce Ballantyne.

Full credit to the person who did the colourisation, because I don't have that kind of patience / skill, but I toned down the red and yellow to come up with this.

I have that exact cap badge. Not regular apparel for the LRDG, but they really, really didn't have any regular uniform. Given the Lewis gun in the bg, and what you have identified as a Bagnold sun compass (good call btw) the LRDG isn't at all unlikely.

Marina Amaral does alot of colourising history. She's releasing a book, which sounds fascinating.

Us Irish folk know full well that Lens is an utter shithole but I'm not sure any of us realised just how far the place has come on from its shithole heydey. Jaysus.

Don't think they're Canucks. Had a big maple leaf cap badge during WWI (though this photo might be older). Our puttees were wrapped wool strips. Theirs are solid pieces of canvas.

Bloke right up front appears to have 'US' on his collar, which is where they had it. Caps look odd, though, which made me wonder if it's pre-WW1. I can now see the crossed rifles on the other side via the other blokes.

google picture search gives this:

Quote:
Christmas week in Clark County in 1914

Military men from the Vancouver Barracks belly up to the bar at the downtown Log Cabin Saloon on Sixth Street, a popular drinking hole for soldiers. The push for prohibition started early in Washington, and Clark County residents voted on a measure to ban alcohol in early 1915.

Massive photo from Canadian War Museum WWI collection ... couldn't help but 'wow' at the guns on these forestry workers. Probably never lifted weights in their lives...

For colourizations, check out the work of Marina Amaral ...

This has always been captioned as a combat photo and that a sniper took out the Canuck ahead (Italy campaign). I wonder if they ever published who the poor bloke was?

Image

Capt Thomas Garahan in Bitche, France. Apparently the 100th Infantry Div called themselves "Sons of Bitche" after that. :D

Those are Fez's. More likely Bosnian Muslims serving in the SS.

If you read the Wiki post it says literally that. They served in the 1st Croatian division of the SS.

Different angle of the above shot, showing more of the downed soldier. Best I can find quickly: that it was October, 1943 in town of Campochino and lads are from the Carleton and York Regiment of New Brunswick.

These look to be original colour shots ...

Some fun finds in a book about WWI fighters ...

1 Squadron RAF, Clairmarais (near Ypres), July 1918

Image

Pilot positioned behind (was partially in the fold of the page). Nothing like being fully exposed to the side you're not shooting at!

Image

I suppose once you're up in the sky, farts just get blown away. :)

Image

How is this not an amusement park ride??? Lots of targets, paint ball. I'd throw money at such a ride!

Image

Assuming this is for balance, with that heavy engine on the front. Back then, I assume quite a few men would fall under that weight (as opposed to today).

Neig, where did you find that. Without being able to reference it because it's at my parent's place, I'm pretty sure they have that exact pic and my great great uncle is in it.

Perhaps the Lamberton/Cheesman book from 1960

It was this one, which our school library has ... don't think the book cites photo sources. The original would have more on the right (full scope of the S.E.5s), but it was in the fold, so I cropped a bit off.
