Firstly, all of National must stand united behind Bridges. You cannot, for one second, make it appear that this kind of behaviour will win you anything in politics. They must unite and shunt him out. His actions were despicable and have no place in politics (or anywhere for that matter).

Secondly, I want to see National drop in the polls and Bridges struggle as leader but that’s because I disagree with so many of their policies. I don’t want to see parties rise and fall on bullshit like this.

Lastly, some have been saying there wasn’t much in the conversation and it’s what you’d expect form two colleagues in any environment. I agree, though hard to see Jacinda saying anything like that. Christ, imagine if she did? It would wreck her!

What outstanding qualities has Bridges based his career on?

I know that in general most of the other posters on this phred have me on ignore or exercise it personally , but one of the reasons I keep coming back here is because of the attitude the majority of posters have towards the National party.

The majority of people in the real world I know simply don't have or don't express a political opinion.

I do , but there's only one consistent aspect to it.

In my 64 years of rattling around the place I've only observed one consistent political fact in NZ.

Every Gnat government has systematically destroyed the economy , impoverished society in a variety ways both fiscal and cultural and done their best to ensure another generation of young will lose varying numbers fighting in someone else's wars.

Once upon a time , I was a Labour supporter , but their wholesale takeover by neo-Liberals put pay to that.

I've been more or less supportive of the centrist /left coalitions post MMP , mainly because the quality of MP's was better and the Select Committee process has worked better and resulted in some reasonably well thought out progressive legislation.

As I said , I keep coming back to this forum mainly to try and understand why the National party continues to enjoy alevel of support that I cannot comprehend

The events of the past week just confuse me more.

Why does anyone with an IQ above room temperature not see that the gnats are bunch of a*oles without conscience, without a defined policy or ideal , without a feasible plan for century 21 and are quite simply an example of all that is to be avoided in a parliamentary democracy.
An understandable approach.

The funniest thing to emerge from this week is that because JLR has refused to resign from parliament, National may end up being the first to use Winston Peter's waka-jumping law to get rid of Ross out of parliament. A law which the Nats were vehemently opposed to, saying it was anti-democratic.

My favourite Journo piece is the following involving the Mums...........

Simon Bridges' mother says she didn't bring her son up to swear, following his explosive assessment of his West Coast-based list MP's abilities.
The National party leader called Maureen Pugh "f***ing useless" in a recorded conversation released by rogue MP Jami-Lee Ross during a week of sex revelations and leaked audio tapes.

Ross resigned from the National Party this week.
Bridges' mother Ruth (80) told the Herald on Sunday at her home in Tauranga : "I was disappointed Simon used bad language. He certainly wasn't brought up that way but I suppose he was trying to be blokey amongst the blokes".

Pugh's mother, June Briggs, lashed out at Bridges, describing him as a "dumbass". Ruth said she understood how Briggs felt from a "mother's point of view" but was happy her son had apologised to the MP "profusely".

The retired former primary school teacher says it was hurtful reading nasty comments about her son.

"They love to say things like 'Simple Simon', 'You're a muppet'. It's upsetting and you feel the pain but you get numb to it. There's nothing you can do about it.

"I would not respond. It would not be appropriate. It would create a bigger furore if you did."

The Opposition leader's mother was also upset her son was vilified following Ross' comments about the ethnicity of those on the National Party list.

The same recording revealed Jami-Lee Ross saying to Bridges: "Two Chinese would be more valuable than two Indians".

"All the parties do it," Ruth said.

"They are trying to get a balance of representation of different people in Parliament. We have lovely Indian folk here who are very supportive of Simon. He has a great relationship with them. He's not in the least racist. It really upset me when they started on that."

But politics is off the the table whe it comes to mother and son conversations - when Ruth text Bridges out of concern this week he replied, "Mum I don't need your advice on politics".

"Simon doesn't talk politics with me - he just wants me to be his mum, but I do follow him extremely closely. You know if he hurts. I hurt. If he gets kicked. I feel the pain, naturally. I know he is a very good person, very genuine and he's scrupulously honest."

I would imagine so too but when I read comments like this from the story it makes me wonder what is going on.
A National Party spokesman said: "Over the past several weeks the National Party has taken seriously the mental health concerns raised by Mr Ross and the medical professionals he has been involved with. That has included seeking advice from medical professionals and involving Police wherever necessary to ensure support is made available to Mr Ross. It would not be appropriate to comment further."

Bradbury is a ranter. I tried to read the Daily Blog for a while but it has zero substantial content. That article is just a screed.

As to the partisanship, yes it's a problem, and frankly quite bizarre in New Zealand which is actually a low variance political country.

Take grouch's post a few back. Does that accurately describe life under National? It sounds terrible. It sounds worthy of an armed revolution. It sounds like rubbish. It is hysterical.

We could do with a little less of that kind of shit and a little more acknowledgement of where New Zealand actually sits in a global context, which is as an irrelevant (sorry Jacinda but you are irrelevant), relatively boring (political nutcases aside), but exceptionally safe and stable country at the bottom of the world. And long may it stay that way.
