I'm afraid of how much money Matt Ryan is going to demand now. I'm hoping he might give a little hometown discount ala Brady to allow them maybe go get some free agents.

The cap is massive btw. Rodgers could get an enormous contract.

Why would Ryan be in a position to demand more now?

The market will set the table. Garopollo just signed the most expensive contract in NFL history and he has he started less than 10 games. Ryan and Rodger's agents will blow this deal out of the water.

It's always cheaper to try and get in early and extend, especially before the cap blows out. And teams start throwing around silly contracts. Matt Staffords contract now looks cheap for example and signed that in August.

Yes but is Ryan's contract up for negotiation already? I thought he just recently signed an extension...?

I want one gm to have the balls to go with either a rookie contract or hall of famer. So when the Dalton, Cutler or Smith comes for the 20 mill say good luck and draft. And keep drafting until a stud turns up.

It'll never happen but would be a great experiment.

Jaysus, Garoppolo is being paid $37M this year

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/san-francisc ... olo-14472/

Cap hits:

2018 - $37,000,000
2019 - $20,000,000
2020 - $26,600,000
2021 - $26,900,000
2022 - $27,000,000

For comparison, the two big contracts signed last off-season...

Matt Stafford: 16.5, 26.5, 29.5, 31.5, 30.0, 23.0
Derek Carr: 15.7, 25.0, 22.5, 21.5, 22.1, 19.9

Funny old career for Jimmy G so far, a couple of SuperBowl rings and a monster contract for sitting on the bench in NE and being competent for a few games in SF.

So the final part of Brady's "documentary" won't air because they lost the Super Bowl. What a cheeseball.

Frank Reich unveiled as new head coach of the Colts. Asked if he hated or loved Josh McDaniels for what he did Reich said "The back-up role has served me well in my career". Almost as good a comeback as his one against Houston in '93.

Can't help thinking the Colts have got a better coach in Reich than they would have had in McDaniels.

Article on how the Browns coud affect the entire NFL during this Free Agency and Draft.

Toys with a few scenarios such as:

Scenario

The Browns double down on the contract the 49ers gave Jimmy Garoppolo by not only making Kirk Cousins the NFL's richest player but also front-loading the deal with enough bonus money to choke off any other bidders. They then cavort through the draft stuffing their pockets with an All-America team to surround Cousins with affordable young talent.

Who it impacts

Every team that covets Cousins, most notably the Broncos. Every team jockeying for position to draft a rookie quarterback or expecting a Saquon Barkley or Minkah Fitzpatrick to fall to them because everyone else is jockeying for quarterbacks. Every team that someday hopes to sign or extend a quarterback without resorting to multiple seasons of eating the salary-cap equivalent of ramen noodles. Yep, that covers the entire NFL.

The skinny

There's a lot of wisdom to this scenario for the Browns. Cousins takes the onus of quarterback development off a front office and coaching staff eager for some immediate results. With Cousins as a stabilizing influence, a strong draft class could make the Browns competitive in a hurry. And the Browns are so flush with cash that they can sign Cousins and still have cap room for appetizers and dessert in free agency.

The league-wide implications of this scenario are staggering. Right now, the Garoppolo deal is a white elephant, a one-of-a-kind contract that reflects a unique set of circumstances. If Cousins signs a similar-but-larger deal, it sends the entire quarterback market into the upper ionosphere. The price of a Case Keenum automatically shoots up, further frustrating veteran-seekers like the Broncos. Whole economic textbooks will be written to explain how the Packers and Falcons can extend Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan. Drew Brees may end up with his own listing on the NASDAQ.

In summary, the Browns could sign a second-tier (by most accounts) quarterback, set themselves up for an 8-8 season and destabilize the entire NFL salary structure in the process.

"The Kansas City Chiefs will receive a 2018 fourth-round pick and a 2019 second-round pick from the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for cornerback Marcus Peters and a 2018 sixth-round pick"

KC trade away stroppy, but brilliant, Pro Bowl cornerback Marcus Peters to the Rams for a packet of Cheesy Wotsits and some dry roast nuts.
KC fan site had over 1,500 fan comments by last night, virtually all of them variations on the theme of WTF!!!

High profile players starting to get Franchise Tagged but one of them, Jarvis Landry, is understood to be available for trade.

Roger Goodell expected to fine Jerry Jones several Million Dollars over costs incurred defending the Ezekiel Elliot suspension

And the Combine starts today - so watch out for the speedy WR who jumps from 4th round to 1st round on the basis of a 40y dash.

Some players I like in this draft. Most of them are pretty obvious.

Quenton Nelson - a pure animal of a man. I
Minkah Fitzpatrick - playmaker, versatile
Saquon Barkely - home run, big play guy
Derwin James - was probably better a freshman when he just jumped out as a special talent. Still very good though
Derrious Juice - underrated as Barkley takes the limelight. But comes from a RB rich program and runs hard. Very productive
Christian Kirk - he has always been the standout player whenever I've seem A&M play. The best WR in the draft for me

I assume there must be more behind the scenes re: Peters.

I think you can see the problems with Peters without delving too far into it. He was a problem in college and thrown off the team. That's pretty hard to do when you are talented.

And he's clearly been a head case in KC. The owner probably wouldn't ok him resigning so they tried to get what they could for him. Which wasn't much tbf.

How did you rate Orlando Brown?

Could go from 1st Round to Day Three after that Combine "performance"

He didn't stand out at all when I watched Oklahoma - probably benefited from having a famous dad but yeah what a shocker of a performance.

The high school he went to isn't far from me, nice area. They have lots of sons of pro athletes going there.

McGlinchey will be a bust if he’s drafted in the 1st as a franchise LT. The 2nd round or lower as a RT and he will be a serviceable player.

Rosen might be the most polarizing guy in years. He could be anything but the team fit will be massive. A small market team with less cameras in his face will be much better. The Jets would be a disaster.

Thanks for proving me right Fonz.

I would like the Jets to draft Darnold if they don't get Cousins or Keenum.

Rams have been super busy traders. On top of the Peters trade we sent Robert Quinn to Miami for the same round (higher number) picks that Peters cost us. As well as improving our 4th & 6th round position and getting Peters we dump Quinn's salary cap hit. He did improve late in the year but he's not a natural fit for the 3-4 scheme and he's clearly declining after some injury hit seasons so its a solid Rams move.

Then today / yesterday, somewhat surprisingly the Rams sent Ogletree to the Giants for some mid/late round picks. Ogletree's a playmaking LB but he's a little soft against the run for an ILB and so is his partner Mark Barron, so it's not that surprising that the Rams should look to replace one with a bigger guy there. The surprise is that its 'Tree as he was defensive captain and got a big contract extension only last Autumn. Tells me that, a) Rams had second thoughts on the value of that. b) Rams think Barron is a more important / versatile player and will resign him.

We now have 6 picks in the 6th round  (as well as 2 in the 4th and 1 in the 5th). Clearly they think its a deep draft.

Rams just added Talib from the Broncos for a 5th and signed Sam Shields for CB depth. Now I know Shields is coming back from a year out with concussion but that DB roster is looking pretty fierce with Peters, Talib, Joyner & John Johnson starters and Webster, Shields and Roby-Coleman (hopefully resigning) as depth.

Looking forward to seeing how Jimmy G does throwing into that no-fly zone with Aaron Donald in his face.

So great to have a proper Rams 49ers California rivalry back.

Deshone Kizer traded after one season to Green Bay. Guy was never a first year starter. Lots of people liked him over Watson but I could never see it. Kizer was a shaky starter at Notre Dame which is never a good sign.

In another deal we got Tyrod Taylor from Buffalo. I'm okay with that. Now whichever QB we draft can sit behind him for a season or two. Still like Allen, could live with Rudolph and maybe Jackson (think he has potential but not sure the division suits his style). Rosen is a no and I'm back and forth on Darnold. Has great touch on his passes but I'm not sure he can command an NFL locker room with his passive demeanor and the decisions with some of his throws needs to improve.

$13M Dollars a season to a guy who's had two knee injuries in the last two seasons.
MCL in 2016 and ACL in 2017.
At least SF can afford it.

edit: sorry, MCL and Achillies

Sherman's a consolation prize after Talib turned them down.

Kizer could be a very good trade for Green Bay. They know how to develop a QB as backup to a Hall of Famer.

Cousins reportedly signing for massive money with the Vikings.

So, Broncos and Jets drafting a QB.

Also Cardinals will have to trade up (desperately).
They have NO Quarterbacks on their roster right now and about $19M of cap space that can't possibly attract Cousins.

Oakland Raiders decision on cut/keep Sean Smith just got a bit easier.
He's going to jail for a year.

Apparently Raiders were in the mix for Richard Sherman, but told him they didn't have the money to match the 49'ers offer.

Interested in talking to Mo Wilkerson and now Ndamukong Suh is just about to be cut by the Dolphins.
So, basically, Free Agent pick of either D/L or CB and then draft the other.
Maybe even draft a LB (especially as it appears we're letting go of Bowman).

Fair play to Suh, he's played a blinder; the clear top of this class.

He'll smash the record for pay defensively when it's done.
