A friend of mine (suitably a Miami Hurricanes fan) made a good point the other day. He said that such is the nature of the sport that you have to enjoy inflicting pain on others in order to make it into the NFL and you pretty much have to be a thug to have a chance of doing so. Sure, there are gentlemen in the NFL but the entire premise of the sport is to physically destroy your opponent so its not exactly surprising that young men reared and trained in this violent, masculine culture (many of whom come from violent neighborhoods in the first place) are not exactly model citizens.

If only there were another hugely physical contact sport in the world to compare it to...

You feel bad for AP? I feel sorry for the child.

Saw this book in Harlem being advertised. Corporal punishment has a long history in this world and black community. Not every kid needs to be hit to be kept in order, but then not everytime a kid gets a whooping is it child abuse.

From what I can see AP was just doing what most southern parents do when a kid is acting up and hasn't learn to stop trying a parents patience.

If the pics I saw are accurate he went way beyond the point of his culture and upbringing being an excuse. It's a pathetic cop-out.

AP always came across very well buy let's bit kid ourselves, he was never the sharpest knife.

RG3 reported dislocated ankle. That would mean several months sidelined.

Depends how Hoyer does. He got the offense moving after a poor start against the Steelers and they are up on the Saints currently through a quarter.

Rice has earned millions in pay and sponsorship. I don't think a reduction in his families quality of life will be any sort of negative that needs to be considered. He should be in prison.

I thought before the season started, the Raiders had a genuine shot at 0-16.

They'll probably start every match as underdogs. No Jags on the schedule to bail them out...

Feel sorry for Derek Carr - the kid has so little help out there. He'll have a new coach next season as well - or maybe later this season...

That's 8 losses in a row for DA, and his Raiders.

When's the draft? :(

Since there is no college thread this year, this is pretty hilarious:

Texas screwed up the coin toss yesterday against UCLA and ended up having to kick off both halves. Here's why: https://vine.co/v/Oagr6FQzBPA

And just got a pick. Game is close to being unwatchable with so many penalties though.

Purely for interests sake: The history/origins of every pro-semi pro American Football team ever.

Had no idea the Cardinals are the oldest team. Starting in Racine, then Chicago, merged with the Steelers for a year, then St Louis and eventually Phoenix. After that the Green Bay Packers and then the New York Giants the oldest consistent one-city teams.

Jameis Winston suspended for the first half of the Clemson game for standing on tables in the middle of the Florida St campus yelling "fudge her right in the pussy" repeatedly. Wonder which NFL team goes near him next year...

I hate all of those pan handle varsities. Wankers the lot of them.

That SF loss to Chicago. f**king glad I didn't see it - TV may not have lasted.

Saints 0-2 (ATL and the f**king Browns), that to me is the biggest surprise.

I don't understand how that works.

Ref; "If you choose defence, you're gonna kick off both halves."
Texas players; "Put the defence on first?" "Yeah."

Surely the team that kicks first half, automatically receives in the 2nd?

You would think, but this is 'Murica.

The Bruins (UCLA) won the coin toss, and said they would "defer", which means they get to receive the ball in the second half (Texas kick off). That meant Texas had the choice for the first half (it should be automatic I agree) and their choices were to Kick Off or Receive the kick off. And after the ref explained it to Texas, they still chose to Kick Off in the first half.

You get the option. Who knows, back in the days of 6-3 games, kicking off may have been a better option as it was more of a territory game than a possession game.

There's a heck of a lot of information about the early NFL teams on wikipedia, seems very well researched too with links to articles etc., lots of interesting little nuggets of info too, for example the Oorang Indians were named after a dogs' home!

It really must suck being a Raiders fan. Why do they always suck?

Seriously the draft is there to balance and help out where possible and they always perform horrendously?

Oldest franchise and been largely a badly-ran joke by the Bidwill family who've been the owners since 1932.

The first NFL season was in 1920 (called the American Professional Football Association, or APFA):

(Win-Loss-Tie)

Akron Pros (8-0-3)
Decatur Staleys (10-1-2) - modern-day Chicago Bears
Buffalo All-Americans (9-1-1)
Racine Cardinals (6-2-2) - modern-day Arizona Cardinals
Rock Island Independents (6-2-2)
Dayton Triangles (5-2-2)
Rochester Jeffersons (6-3-2)
Canton Bulldogs (7-4-2)
Detroit Heralds (2-3-3)
Cleveland Tigers (2-4-2)
Chicago Tigers (2-5-1)
Hammond Pros (2-5-0)
Columbus Panhandles (2-6-2)
Muncie Flyers (0-1-0)

Logged in to post that the Jags had put in Bortles and he's doing well, aaaaand he throws an interception.

Jags got absolutely pounded by the Colts in the first half. Feel a little sorry for Henne as he did some good things after stepping in for Gabbert last year, his offensive line have done him no favors this season.
