It was a death trap that needed to be knocked. The last capacity they had there from the fire officer was barely above 30,000 as the place was like a relic from the 1930s despite being only 40 years old.

I remember playing sciath na scoil there when I was 11 thinking the dressing rooms were tiny and they were the same ones the seniors had to get togged out. It was a farce of a stadium and a rebuild was long overdue.

I was actually surprised it was built in 76. I remember being there in the late 80's and 90's and it being a noticeable shithole. There were literally safety issues from day 1.

Someone could genuinely have died in 2008 when the terraces were packed like sardines and had to overflow behind the Cork goal. The GAA are very lucky to have not had a serious injury or fatality on their hands as Croke Park also had this issue multiple times before it was redeveloped.

Yep-went to Syracuse for a week. The old town of Ortigia is lovely with loads of little small squares with restaurants and bars etc on them. Some old Greek and Roman ruins knocking around as well

More partial to Sardinia as I'm a lazy lardarse on holiday these days but was good. Only covered about half the coast and suspect a lot of cool stuff also in the other half but depending on where you're going:

Palermo. Didn't quite get it. Met some nice people and bars but town as a whole felt loud, dusty and cramped. Zingaro is worth a trip if you're in the area for a few days. Corleone might be too - we didn't bother, went to the fake one instead.

Cefalu. Nowt amazing but an easy spot to relax for a day or two, nice restaurants and walking in the forests inland.

Was dreading Taormina but it's a decent base for Etna and we just ignored the main bit and spent time down at the beach at Naxos/Bella. Stayed in a place called Isoco which was great outdoors, breakfast table at the foot of a walnut tree growing through the ceiling, hot tub, couches and 4 poster beds facing Calabria over the water. Good in the evenings.

Also liked the trek up to Castelmola, film set for Godfather and pints at the Turrisi pub are memorably bizarre.

Didn't spend much more than a day in Catania as we were flying back but again, might be a good base for Syracuse and Noto. Enjoy.
Got any recommendations for Sardinia? Particularly around Alighero (or however its spelled)

Will you have a car ?

The old town of Alghero, whilst very touristy does have lots and lots of restaurants, and good ones as well.

There are coach/boat trips to, I think its, Neptunes Grotto, if sea caves are your thing,

If you have a car, Alghero is in the main wine growing area of Sardinia, both the Cannonau di Alghero, and Vermentino di Sardegna hail
from there, and Sella and Mosca do a decent vinyard tour with lots of tasting quite close to the town.

I was at the opening in 1976 for the drawn Cork/Kerry Munster final, and played there in a curtain raiser with Cork u16 hurlers before the replay a week or two later. How people weren't killed on opening day is one of the great mysteries as big gates buckled under pressure from people trying to get in, and the sidelines, and behind the goals, were filled with the overflow from the terraces and stand. The place looked very impressive for that time, but in time honoured fashion the GAA had given absolutely no thought to player facilities, with only two dressing rooms which were closet like, which were shared by the guys playing in both the curtain raiser and the main event, so you would have 40 players plus two "commmmitttteees" using each at the same time. In addition the pitch was a bog, and the entire stand sideline had been dug up and relaid by what must have been a gang of teenagers for the replay

Ah man, you'll set me off on one now. Ever since we started running the cafe holidays are a thing that happens to other people, but if not I'd be planning my trip there now.

Alghero is a perfect base and some nice restaurants to boot. Be sure to grab a foccaccia or ten in Bar Milese on the waterfront, there's a little mini high rise skyscraper thing further in town that does a good happy hour and nice views to boot.

Local beach is fine but chances are you'll be driving to more secluded ones up the coast. There's a few little deserted coves near Bivio Bombarde if you ditch the car early near the Punta Negra Hotel and go walking through the maquis and nice views of the bay. Never did the grotto but heard it's good and there's a nice park at the cliff tops.

Andrea Jensen. Costs a few quid for a day out but if you can afford it, go. It's worth every penny.

Sassari's not massively interesting but some very good restaurants and almost worth it just to jump on the rattly train inland. Never saw Bosa, wasn't too taken with Oristano but Castelsardo and the road up to Santa Teresa and the Corsica day ferry is decent. Cagliari a bit meh, try staying at Vincenzos in Dorgali if you're mobile and set on heading to Cala Luna and the other beaches on the eastern coast or Nuraghe inland.

Feck it, most of that whole area is good and cheap as chips - probably will be more so now that Ryanair's cut their service in half. Grab an Ichnusa/Sella wine and soak up the sun

That'll teach you for having good rugby players.
Sometimes it pays to be an Ulster supporter.
At least until the 3rd week of the season anyway, til our whole pack is suffering from long term injuries and we have to start Andy Warwick in Euro games and Diack at 8

So IRFU accounts record a deficit but lower than planned for.

Costs have increased quite rapidly while income was stagnant. Big number that stands out to me is professional fees - €2.35m. What the fudge were they about.

The website costs about €7k a week. On what? It's rubbish.

Womens Rep teams cost €2.15m. 7's costs were surprisingly low at €268k.

Looking down the bottom of the site, I'm guessing they pay for the photos, the stats and they also use a third party to deliver the website itself who are probably charging a small fortune.

Then obviously you have to pay people to provide content.

Administration and overheads increase by €1.2m due almost entirely to an increase in professional fees. Included in here are the costs for the year of the RWC 2023 bid together with costs to date of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2017 tournament which Ireland are hosting later this summer. In relation to the RWC 2023 bid I would like to pay particular thanks to Failte Ireland and the Northern Ireland Tourism Board for their assistance, nancial and otherwise with the bid process.

Thanks.

Going through that, what jumps out is that the cost of the professional game (ie players pay) has risen by €8m over two seasons from € 28m to € 36m. Whilst some of that is probably due to the fall in sterling, that sort of increase is basically unsustainable, and explains why the Pro 12 are talking to both South African and US teams. They need the money!

It's a pity they don't break out the Branch accounts.
