William Randolph Hearst (whose life was being parodied in Citizen Kane) used his media empire to make things "difficult" for Citizen Kane.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_R ... tizen_Kane

Citizen Kane, released on May 1, 1941, is loosely based on Hearst's life.[63] Welles and his collaborator, screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, created Kane as a composite character of multiple men, among them Harold McCormick, Samuel Insull and Howard Hughes. Hearst, enraged at the idea of Citizen Kane being a thinly disguised and very unflattering portrait of himself, used his massive influence and resources in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent the film from being released—all without his ever even having seen it. Welles and the studio RKO Pictures resisted the pressure, but Hearst and his Hollywood friends ultimately succeeded in pressuring theater chains to limit showings of Citizen Kane,[64] resulting in only moderate box-office numbers and seriously impairing Welles' future career prospects.

The result of all his efforts was that it was ignored by the Oscars

I was a history student and teacher, so maybe this stuff gets my goat in a way that doesn't bother everyone else, but taking liberties with historical events and period detail (i.e. non-white people in early to mid tudor England who weren't a statistically negligible minority in a few ports) makes films almost unwatchable when they're not explicitly disclaimed.

Every such film should carry a few frames of a big old warning sign just after the certification and before the credits/pre-credit scenes stating that the film while largely historically accurate in spirit is not in fact and should not be considered as such (I'd also like the credits to include a bibliography for further reading so people can educate themselves, but I may be alone in that...).

Similarly, I find it difficult to enjoy biopics or films about more recent events too as I'm just not sure how much of it can be trusted and if they're not faithfully re-telling, why not make the same film but change all the character names from those of real people and use the good old 'inspired by real events' line?
Saw it last night and I have to agree with Socky.

I think the gap between Saving Private Ryan and the winner Shakespeare in Love was the biggest error of the 90s.

I think those cuts are perfect. The extended version runs at two and a half hours or more. That's arse-numbing. The sentry guns and the colonist stuff aren't missed and eliminate good long chunks of film. The daughter cut is odd because it's not much of a time saver but there's enough in the performance for the audience to infer that there's some maternal business going on there. I think it's nice that it wasn't spelled out.

I suppose that the sentry guns are supposed to add tension, as you can't actually see the xenomorphs getting closer, but the ammo is running out.

Probably unnecessary, there's already been plenty of tension in the film by that point that's already moved on to the next, action heavy bit.

To me the sentry bit draws from the same well as the motion sensor bit but runs less effectively because of all the shooting and loudness.

That's why I added the Shakespeare in Love example. Dances with Wolves is a genuinely good film, although I think it's cool to pretend otherwise. Better than Goodfellas, probably not, but a real contender.

I disagree about Dances With Wolves, I think its hokey shit, but that's another reason why the Oscars (and Emmys, Grammys etc) are stupid. Films are intrinsically subjective and comparing a bunch of different films & acting performances is simply apples and oranges.

Except for when Blade Runner 2049 won visual effects over War for Planet of the Apes, that was just BULLSHIT.

Ripley's Daughter was really the only cut that took something from the film.

The findings of the Alien ship possibly, but not actually necessary.
The bit in the Colony - where the Conoly Commander turns out to be Captain Hollister from Red Dwarf - I laughed out loud.
Hudson's gung-ho bit as the drop ship is flying is just plain daft.
And I hated the Sentry Machine Guns - turned the Aliens into mindless cannon fodder.

In general, what you really learn from a "Director's Cut" is what a good job the Editor did in the first place!

The motion sensor bit is also near the start. It builds tension before you know what exactly has taken place and sets up the marines getting massacred quite well. Build the tension before all the noise and killing.
The sentry guns tries to go back to that halfway through the film. I suppose it's to add more to the whole getting through the night segment of the film, but it doesn't quite work, as you say.

'Dogman' (2018) - a really good gritty crime / revenge drama from Italy. Anyone who likes the TV Show Gomorra might get on with this. 7.3/10

'Pin Cushion' (2018) - a quaint British mother - daughter relationship drama that was an average 6 out of 10, until the hard hitting last 15 minutes bumped it up to a 7.1/10.

'Girl' (2019) - Belgian made film about a 15 transgender girl. Some very uncomfortable moments. middle section doesn't really click but feels liek an important film. 6.8/10

'Can you ever forgive me?' (2018) - I bloody loved this. Fabulous performance by Melissa McCarthy. Never seen her in anything before. Is she normally this good? The movie suffers from a bit too much comic relief from Richard E Grant, but it was a very nice surprise. 7.8/10

'If Beale Street Could Talk' (2018) - Really lovely film. Absolutely superb all round cast and a mesmerising score. 7.8/10

'Free Solo' (2018) - Gripping. In more ways than one. Made my palms sweat and my toes tingle.

So I got around to watching The Master finally.
Not sure what to make of it, I feel like I need to rewatch it but I don't know if I feel like I'm up to it.

The cinematography & Joaquin Phoenix's amazing performance carried me through a lot of it.
Day Lewis must've been something in Lincoln that year to get the Oscar over him.

I think she’s pretty funny. Her name blew up after Bridesmaids and of course she ended up in some bad high-budget stuff (like Zach Galifinakis after the Hangover) but similarly she makes the most out of the material. Watched St Vincent a few weeks ago, another good one with her.

As the poster who had a thread on Honnold years ago that the mods deleted I am clearly the bored expert. The movie is good and I have watched a lot of stuff on Honnold. Have to say didn't realise how really autisticy he is. Thought he was a bit twitchy not pre rainman. Not sure how I didn't pick up on it before but the others were climbing videos so did less insight stuff. I would give it 8/10 as it could have done with a bit more climbing and less of his missus. I would imagine others may not agree.
I think they got the balance right between climbing and the human drama of it.
He didn't quite strike me as on the spectrum or anything, but I'm no expert.
He just seems emotionally stunted and for all his bluntness he's perfectly self aware/even a little wry about how he is.

The Dawn Wall (as well as Meru which has been mentioned a good bit) is a great climbing movie.

The Dawn Wall is an excellent movie. All that work, all that effort. Only to hold the title for two years.

Adam Ondra crushed it by topping out the route after just a few weeks' work during his first trip to Yosemite. He crossed pitch 15 in two attempts.

Went to the cinema again and finally saw Into the Spiderverse. (One of two movies being played really).
Thought it was excellent actually. Really dynamic and unique animation, a clear directorial mark on the film and actual pathos and stakes.
The constant wise cracking of every character got a small bit tedious, but it was far less irritating than other super hero movies.
It sagged a little at the end, but yeah, really good animated movie.
I know a little bit of Miles Morales prior to this and wasn't a fan of the idea, but it won me over on his character.

Much better than the homogenised slop Marvel churn out the rest of the time.
