I'm doing a rewatch of it, am about half way through. Why do people complain about Connery's accent in that movie? After the initial 'Russian' and then it converts to english everyone is doing their own accent - Sam Neil has his half NZ half British accent, all the yanks have yank accents.

And fair enough too. Was discussing it at brunch with a couple of mates this morning, and we had to kick our Arab mate repeatedly for only having one loud Arab volume.

There's an Avengers thread lads.

Don't sully the film thread with it.

Get over yourself, it's potentially one of the biggest releases of all time. People will be discussing it any and everywhere.

For the sake of spoilers alone it's worth using the dedicated thread, whether you like superhero movies or not.

Gonna make ridiculous money, no doubt.
Expertly made kid's movie.
but discuss it in the appropriate thread.

In raw bums on seats numbers and cultural consciousness it's also possibly re-defining what it means to be a huge release.

The other thread's fine for spoiler filled discussion, but there's nothing wrong with anyone dropping a news item or a quick general take on their viewing experience in here.

The 'get over yourself' is primarily regarding your habit of sneerily dismissing these sorts of films as being for kids. We get it, they're not your cup of tea, but that type of carry on is bollocks and needlessly belittling.

Just in from it. Go see it. It's genuinely very good, despite the comic book source material.

All strands tied together very well, lots of humour, emotion, good dialogue, and a fitting finish. Right scenes aren't OTT like a DC movie.

Definitely worth a viewing in the cinema.

But it's ok for you (and Kid A) to post in that thread when you have nothing to add to the actual discussion? Seems somewhat hypocritical

It's a film thread, and that's what Avengers is. Hardly groundbreaking, is it?

Anyway, whatever you think, tying together threads from 20+ movies over 10 years so well is no mean feat. A credit to the writing and directing team

Yeah it's great. One of those lads runs a shop in Monmouth now.

If you like that you may like 'Land of Mine' and 'Lebanon'

edit: and 'Foxtrot', which is amazing and done by the same guy who did 'Lebanon'.

Watched Capernaum last night. Brutal. Highly recommend.

As for Avengers, not interested really. I'll probably stream it once it's available but I'm in no rush to see it. I'm pretty much over Superhero films, that said I moderately enjoyed Shazam but only because I took my nephew to it for his birthday.

Finally got round to seeing The Siege of Jadotville on Netflix yesterday. Actually quite enjoyed it, at first I thought it was a bit unlikely that the Irish troops sufferd no fatalities against overwhelming opposition but reading about the battle afterwards it would seem that was the case. Politicians and the UN don't come out of it looking very good. The French mercenary commander Rene Faulques had a bit of an epic military career, how he ended up defending mining interests in the Congo is interesting!

I caught up with Solo last night. It was decent enough, probably the definition of 7 out of 10 film. Some really enjoyable bits, nice nods to the future films and some good performances, but enough flaws to cap it there.

Mental film. The Director put his life into it (literally), and died halfway through making it. So I think his son took it on and completed it. It's like something Tarkovsky would have done if he were still alive.

Watched 'Apollo 11' last night. Documentary about the landings. Without a doubt one of the most stunning documentaries I've ever seen. It looks and sounds perfect. It just lays out events of 7 days in 1969 and lets us absorb them. No interviews, no talking heads, no voice-over, no opinions, no scientists, no modern day thoughts, no re-enactments. Just the events, unfolding before us.

9.5/10

I'm currently compiling my Sydney Film Festival shortlist. The missus and I restrict ourselves to 5 films every year. Her list is 6 films long. Mine is 38.

So I've whittled down the combined list a bit. If anyone has actually seen any of these then I'd appreciate the feedback.

Blinded by the Light (UK)
Daffodils (NZ)
The Dead Don't Die (US) - Jim Jarmusch zombie pic
The Falls (US)
Happy New Year, Colin Burstead (UK) - Ben Wheatly's latest
I Am Mother (Oz) - SF
Kursk (Fra)
The Nightingale (Oz)
Pain & Glory (Esp)
Palm Beach (Oz)
Vai (NZ)
The Wedding Guest (UK)
What Will Become of Us (Oz)

My problem with the film festival is I can’t sit in crowded cinemas anymore - I need to put my feet and lie flat like a plank basically. Then usually every film I want to see is at The State theatre or similar.

I'm fine with crowds, particularly during a film fest. Somewhat adds to the communal experience of watching something that might struggle to get distributed any other way.

However at the State I sit in the Stalls (for the legroom) and at the end of the row (I don't like obstructing people behind and I'm pretty tall). Anywhere else in there is pure torture for me.

Ditto the Enmore for concerts. Only the Stalls.

The Dead Don't Die (US) - Jim Jarmusch zombie pic < its the one movie i have been waiting for this year (apart from all the comic book stuff), i always wait for similar movies every year, they generally only make one a year i.e a higher budget horror comedy, its a dying genre

Oh yeah I’m fine with a crowd and like seeing blockbusters and some comedies with a crowd - as long as I have somewhere to put my feet up. 😀

I’ve never thought Of the stalls at State before - do you have book specifically?

Depends on the film. There are always a couple of screenings that are 100% GA so it's a case of first in. The vast majority you need to book tho.

Has anyone seen The Public (Emilio Estevez, Michael K Williams, et al), about homeless men taking over a public library during a cold snap? It's part of my world as a public librarian, so I liked its message and how it plays out, but will admit that there were some aspects I felt could have been better (not on library stuff, but on character development, some of the lines).

Recently saw Stan and Ollie and the Favourite: S&O was beautifully written and shot, basically a love letter to the pair. It wasn’t as moving as I thought/hoped it would be but nonetheless it was a gentle and enjoyable way to pass a few hours. As you’d expect, amazing performances from Reilly and Coogan. 8/10

The Favourite: I enjoyed it but I thought it was a pale imitation of something like Les Liasons Dangereuses. It was funnier than I thought it would be. 7/10.

I went on a retro bend last night.

Outlander followed by The Gumball Rally.

I hadn't seen either film in decades. Not masterpieces by any means but really enjoyed both. Particularly in full HD quality and sound which often really lifts old films.
