Note the snow on the summit:

(yes, it snows on Venus, a mineral condensate of lead sulfide and bismuth sulfide precipitated from the atmosphere at altitudes above 2600 metres).
Is this an artists impression?

See these things?

Image

Plover birds
These birds lay their eggs on the ground. They have their nest on the ground, camouflaged with the grass, they have cute baby chicks, and are harmless right? They're just birds, right?

Image

WRONG
These spur-winged plovers have venomous yellow spikes on their wings.* They swoop down at high speeds and will try to stab you with them. It's scary as fark. If you see some on the grass, stay away from them, trying to see the cute baby birds isn't worth a flying death spike to the neck.

* The venomous bit is bullshit but those spurs are sharp, farken.

They need them, because they are the globus of the bird world, constantly screeching 'LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME!'. Makes you want to kick their kiddliwinks right in their fluffy little faces.

One of the very few birds native to NZ that have self introduced since Europeans arrived.

They nest around the drift wood on one of the local beaches here. Recent arrival (less than a century ago) now found through-out the country.

 Probably these guys - spur-winged lapwing or spur-winged plover = Vanellus spinosus - you can see the spikes.

Image

Related to the Australasian ones (masked lapwing or spur-winged lapwing = Vanellus miles) with the distinctive yellow mask and spurs. They're passive most of the time but become aggro in spring!
