i used to wear a shirt with pictures of a bunch of rubber playing music, tentatively called "The Rubber Band" which one of my aunts from canada gave me.....I never understood why people were laughing when they saw me in town..years later i realised, those were not rubber bands per say but condoms :/ needless to say i stopped accepting gifts form that aunt.

No, it's just the incongruity of the more exotic sounding Maori names with "Stewart".

The translations are "The fish of Maui" for the North Island and "The water greenstone" or "The water treasure" for the South.

The english names for those islands really does leave a bit to be desired. North, South, and Stewart.

Weirdly, the south island was once called the middle island. They weren't even trying.
