I Google it - known issue, RMA required.

I contact Google as it's still under warranty.

They can't fix or replace so have offered a full refund! £499

Today I ordered a Pixel2XL 64 for £629 to replace it, effectively £130
Nice! Although I've had the Pixel 2 XL since it came out... and I don't really recommend it, sorry :(

Was going to ask about the Pixel2 XL.

I'm looking to replace a Note 3, which has served me well tbf, and have decided to get something with a decent camera. I know every phone will beat my current one but what is the current go to? And are there any budget ones I should look at? Although I'm happy to justify the cost of a top end one if the photos are good enough to avoid me needing my main camera in most situations.

It does seem to have a very good camera (though I know SFA about photography), and Google have just enabled all of the fancier machine learning stuff to third party apps to take better pictures (link below).

That said, the bugs in this thing are annoying the fk out of me. So far, the ones affecting me are:

- Sometimes swipe to unlock doesn't work for 7+ attempts
- Similarly, swipe to dismiss notifications sometimes doesn't work
- Fingerprint scanning seems to work for about 10 mins then forgets my fingerprints until I re-add them...
- ... but then sometimes the screen through which one would add fingerprints is blank. I have paid-for support; after about an hour of trying to web chat with them, sending screenshots to them, I heard nothing for days until I recontacted them. Seems they've basically forgotten/ ignored everything I've told them, and may or may not have recorded this as general product feedback, rather than opening a specific ticket on my behalf that they'll fix. I want to smash my face repeatedly against the desk
- Voice commands to Google assistant often fail until I manually unlock the phone
- Similarly the 'squeeze to launch google assistant' won't work until I manually unlock the phone
- Since the February patch, battery consumption seems to have rocketed. Apparently this is a known issue
- (Might not be confined to my phone) The Play store still tries to use my old, cancelled credit card on which I had some fraudulent transactions. This credit card has been 'deleted' (as far as one can see anyhow) from Google payments and the replacement card added but still no joy. The problem's been with them a few weeks now and I hear nothing. When I prompt them, they just say 'yeah it's an issue' we're looking at it. I'm now trying to bump the ticket severity by telling them they're violating their own privacy policy, which states that I can remove this data, and also that I'm concerned this mishandling of my data led to the fraudulent card transaction
- Pretty much 3 out of every 5 times I try to use Google assistant to take a screenshot, it says 'oops, something went wrong'

and probably a bunch of other stuff I'm forgetting

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/02 ... arty-apps/

Edit: changed the last bullet to say when I use Google assistant to take a *screenshot (not a photo)

yeah, a quandary. was quite happy with the 6P up to now.

Pixel XL2 is the closest I get to a like for like replacement and it's Vanilla Android and will get P. some bad stories about the Bluetooth which does worry me as I have the Bose quiet comforts and use then daily for my commute. the BT with the 6P is problematic with audio dropouts, which I don't get when connected to my work iphone 6.

I don't like Samsung, won't touch an iPhone and the rest are either crap hardware or running android 7.

If this doesn't work out will probably go Sony next, but the google Sony TV I have irritates the tits off me as they are so slow getting updated to it's buggy,

but the new Nokia 6 doesn't look too bad, particularly to a price of around £250, but I cant wait for the release. I have 14 days to RMA this get my refund and need a phone now.

I need a new phone and my choice would be the Huawei Mate 10.

Had the Mate 9 for work and loved it.

Can't stand the new Samsung screen ratio.

LG V30 another good option for a decent camera and good audio if you listen to music on it a lot.

Pixel 2, Note 8, Samsung S 9 & 9+, LG V30, Huawei Mate 10 Plus or even the Oneplus 5T.

I use bluetooth daily - in my car to/ from work and for my Bose Soundsport earphones at the gym. In the ~90 days I've had this phone, I can only recall Bluetooth dropping once, possible twice, and then reconnected with a simple BT off/on. My Motorola Moto X used to lose its connection minimum once daily, and needed complete unpairing and re-pairing. And often that wouldn't fix it either.

So, I wouldn't let bluetooth issues put you off the Pixel 2 XL. I'd be put off by all the other issues I list in my post above.

So, my purchase of a new phone has been expedited by managing to smash my screen yesterday. Think I'm going to go for an S9, possibly plus.

However, my question relates to my current phone. It's a Note 3 and I'm wondering am I mad to spend €120 fixing the screen to have it as a backup or for the kids? I only just replaced a faulty battery but I'm thinking it might be good money after bad. Would I be better off putting that money towards a cheap backup? A quick check on Amazon comes up with the Sony Xperia L1 for £130, I know little about it but I'd have thought any phone still being sold as new these days would beat the Note 3?

Yes definitely. 5 years old is pretty ancient in the smartphone sphere.

You can compare phones here:

Also a story about buying old flagships. Quite old but makes the point that newer cheaper phones are better than old flagships

So, went ahead and ordered my S9+ for pickup tomorrow. Very excited, not least because the delights of Android post Lollipop await me (anything to look out for?!). Went for a contract in the end as the bundled Spotify knocked €240 off the price (since I'm paying it anyway) and meant that if I make sure I go straight to a sim only contract in 24 months I'll have paid less than a sim free option (plus the bundle is slightly better than what I'm on).

Still in two minds about fixing my Note 3. I did a compare on the site linked above and actually the difference isn't massive between the Sony I mentioned and the Note 3. Better camera on the Sony and it can take the latest Android but to balance that I get to keep a much loved phone (with recently bought replacement battery!) for about €50 less. Might still be the sentimental decision though!

Yep. You can turn it off though. I've not used it once on my Note 8. The biggest pain in the arse is the dedicated button that can't be remapped or tasked.

I have the pixel 2 (not the XL version)

It's a wonderful phone. Stock Android with a camera that will make any die hard camera fiend blush. Best camera on a phone not named s9 (even then it's close)

Didn't want the XL because of the screen issue with the burn in and blue tint of the cheap LG Oled display.

(Pixel2 has a much better quality AMOLED Samsung display)

Nexus 7 is starting to creak and grind to a halt.
Any suggestions on a replacement tablet with reasonable performance without breaking the bank? Love the bare bones Google Android OS so definitely not looking for anything with useless bloatware.

Just upgraded from an S7 to an S9. I loved my S7. Easily the best phone I've had. My protective case started falling apart 3 weeks ago so I was using it without a case. My wife was all "you better get a new case etc" and I was going to but I had better things to do.

I dropped it on Monday and the back of it shattered. I used this as an excuse to upgrade.

I like the S9. It's great but I can't help but feel I have only a small idea of what its capable of.

I have the Huawei P10 lite. The first time I have gone away from Samsung in 8 years. i'm very happy with this phone and and only when all the apps that currently work with a finger print scanner incorporate face recognition for Android will I change.

I am upgrading my S7. I want the biggest phone available. I want people to see the size of my phone, and openly laugh at me because it looks ridiculous. I want people to see the size of my phone, and to immediately think I have a small penis, and that I'm over-compensating by having a ridiculously big phone. Any suggestions?

Remember the 90s when they were trying to be as small as possible. Those startac things were ridiculous and owned by the sort of person you describe.

I still reckon the Nokia 3310 is one of the best phones ever.

Note 8 is really good if you like Samsung. And it's big. Huawei is releasing the P20 Pro which will be around he same price and size and is getting a bit of buzz. Google Pixel 2 XL if you want the best camera phone currently.

I just got a new S8. It is still in the box as I'm waiting for Amazon to deliver a case to me. They have managed to mess up both deliveries. First by telling me they were not dispatching it until Wednesday then as soon as I cancelled this order they dispatched. Same with a second option. Infuriating.

I'm not overly keen on the weird shape of the S8 so far. I loved my S7. Beast of a phone apart from battery issues with Oreo. Seems to eat it like crazy.

So the Oneplus 6 was officially unveiled today. Looks to be an absolute beast as far as hardware goes. Very minimal and clean fuss-free Android that will be updated to Android P almost as soon as it drops. The camera has been mentioned as strong and the top of the range boosts a whopping 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage making expandable memory virtually pointless. Another downside is that it "only" has a full HD screen but I've got a Moto G5S loan phone at the moment and apart from the brightness I can't really tell the difference between full HD and my Note 8. It's also IP68 and has a 3.5mm headphone jack. Little things but really nice to have.

I do treat myself to one expensive gadget per year and this might be the one. As always, the phone is very competitively priced starting at $529 (£469), $579 (£519) and $629 (£569) for the top spec.

Tempted to switch from the note 8 to the S9 plus. A whopping 256 GB internal hard drive combined with a 400 GB SD card could give you a 600 GB phone.

Dug out my old Nexus 7 tablet there the other day and charged it up. I factory reset it some time ago as it wasn't working well. Seems to work fine so far now, all apps updates on startup.

Question is, will it be able to cope with the latest OS and app versions etc? I wan to give it to the missus to watch Netflix and it'll be used for little else. Am I better off rooting it?
