So if England win next week they will go back to third. The difference between Ireland and Scotland is too great for any ranking points to go to Ireland.

Scotland are due a win. If they have a <15 point win on Saturday, what would happen to the Irish score? (I really ought to try and work out how the rankings system works, but it seems rather impenetrable.

Would a home win against the side ranked 7th get us enough? I know the gap between us and Ireland is comparatively small but even so...

The number 7 ranked team in 2007 went close to winning the RWC. There for the taking for the stealth Wallabies.

Even if Ireland win handsomely they do not gain anything.

So for England, 85.40 for 15+ pts win, 85.30 fr 14pts win or less.

Ireland on 85.32.

Thanks. So the only realistic way of England returning to 3rd place is with a Sweatie win. I can't see us beating France by >15 points.

Home team gets 3 extra points, so yes Ireland can take something off Scotland.

The 5 figures below are the new ratings if the result is:
Home win +15 | Home win <15 | draw | Away win <15 | Away win +15

Italy: 75.41 | 74.50 | 73.50 | 72.50 | 72.41
Wales: 81.17 | 82.08 | 83.08 | 84.08 | 84.17

Scotland: 77.86 | 77.01 | 76.01 | 75.01 | 74.86
Ireland: 82.78 | 83.63 | 84.63 | 85.63 | 85.78

England: 85.41 | 85.31 | 84.31 | 83.31 | 82.41
France: 79.84 | 79.94 | 80.94 | 81.94 | 82.84

(If Ireland win, then they are guaranteed to remain 3rd)

There are actually more points on offer to Ireland than England, which is mad. Just shows how far France have dropped.

I'd actually rather win a game against the Wallabies to be ranked above them.....

I hold no store in this stuff

6 is about right. Obviously the backline talent deserves higher ranking but the forwards pulls it down to 6.

To be fair it's their poor form in their most recent games that is the reason for this fall

Wales and England red hot favourites to go through to the 1/4ers at the next world cup. Anything less is an epic choke.

Plucky Wallabies firming up as the fan favourites I hope.

I was thinking more about winning the last ten straight encounters.

Shrekles is a bit dim.

6 wins and a draw from the last 10.

his math ain't too good.

I refer of course to Wales. Believe me I am aware of how rubbish the Wallabies have been of late, I have an intimate knowledge of their shitfulness that only a dedicated supporter can. I cannot help but chuckle, however, when I see that we are now apparently inferior to Wales, having beaten them ten times in a row. I know this is all worked put by terribly smart people with thick glasses and the requisite mild autism but that is at least slightly amusing isn't it?

But Wales are better than you and will prove it when it matters at RWC.

Well if the last result between two sides was the only criteria that'd be a pretty shit system, don't ya think? E.G. Ireland beat England who beat Wales who beat Ireland. Wales beat South Africa who beat Australia who beat Wales... Hmmm. Perhaps those terribly smart people are just smarter than you?

It's possibly also because Wales beat SA, France and Ireland all of whom Oz lost to.

The Zurich world rankings had a brilliant formula but when the IRB decided to have their own rankings it had to be different and different it is
