Could this be the first time in a hundred years that the Spurs do not make the playoffs?

It's possible, but they've got a decent enough draw that they could sneak into 8th. If Kawhi comes back, they should do.

They've already broken another streak of winning road records and look likely to miss winning 50 games for the first time in ages also.

Actually, that mention of the Spurs - who are, I believe the only team to have won a title with a #1 lottery pick on his rookie contract - got me thinking about the actual likelihood of success via tanking.

Has anyone got any decent examples of a team that got long term success - ie, finals appearances - out of tanking and getting a legacy player from the draft?

I guess Cleveland would fit, even though Lebron was resigned as veteran free agent, but they got Kyrie through the draft also.

^ the Bulls and Rose would have been a good example, but...

Dwight and the Magic had some success. Durant and the Sonics/Thunder...

What could have been for Charlotte? They were in pole to win the lottery for AD with their historically garbage 7-win season (they got Kemba the year before) but dropped to 2 and ended up with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

I did a quick look at NBA Finals in recent years and - while I've probably missed some - here are the teams that made a finals with a top pick that they drafted. This is going back to the 90's

Orlando with Shaq/Penny & then with Howard
Cleveland with James/Irving
Philadelphia with AI
OKC with Durant
Spurs with Duncan
Miami with Wade (stretching it, but he was a top 5 pick).

So only two teams have actually won with a #1 lottery* pick they drafted. 3 teams had lasting success, 3 and a half if you count OKC making a finals/conf finals. Not exactly a resounding recipe for success but I guess if a team's in a small market it's not got a lot of options for recruitment generally.

*eg, not the old coin flip, so Hakeem with the Rockets doesn't count.

Melo and the Nuggets were as successful as you could be, playing against Kobe and those Spurs

And there was a season where CP3 should've been MVP in New Orleans. We ran into the Spurs in the playoffs

Yeah, but that kind of reinforces the point doesn't it, draft picks will only get a team so far without good coaching & recruitment (I guess the Cavs can get away with not having good coaching, tbf).

On the flipside, who has landed a legacy player and failed to find success (yet  )

Kind of a self fulfilling prophecy though, if a player doesn't bring some success they're not regarded as a legacy player.

Looking at the list of #1 picks, and discounting Rose & Chris Webber, the most talented player who didn't bring any genuine success would be maybe Yao Ming. I mean, he improved the team but they didn't translate that to meaningful playoff runs.

Yeah but I was talking about guys who were always going to be great, even at the draft they were expected to be franchise foundations like LeBron and AD

Unbelievable, not just a #1 seed but the overall number one seed..... Kentucky are the winners here, Zona and Virginia would have been their opponents in the next two rounds.

Been watching this tournament for almost 30 years, and I wanted to at least be watching the game where a 16 seed finally won. This is one of the last great magical things to happen in sports.

Don’t usually watch the tournament but had nothing to do and happened to put that game on...wow.

UMBC has some talented players...and a classic nifty Puerto Rican point guard :smug:

I've never heard of an NBA side having 3 games over 3 days. Is this correct?

Yep. The Pacers game was postponed way back, so they decided to slot it in there!

Tue - Lakers
Wed
Thu - @Pels

I don't know what play you're talking about, but the inconsistency between big and small men receiving foul calls is probably the most frustrating thing for me to watch as a fan.

It was the classic feather on the wrist on a 3pt attempt. It was a foul and that's fine if your going to call it. But in the context of the game it was such a bail out call and the last straw

We'd come back from being 20 down, taking it to them in the paint (I think we ended up about 50-38 winners, blocked Harden on 3 drives) and getting nothing from the refs. AD was hot and they started to triple team him with little guys. Eric Gordon blatantly shoved him in the back, Tucker and Ariza were holding him and clearly pulling his jersey. Jrue drives gets bumped, nothing. Refs just let em go, didn't matter we were still closing but it was getting frustrating as fuk. Also doing a relatively good job on Harden (4/13 from deep)

Then he gets the bail out call on another well guarded 3. There was contact but Harden had also been getting his off arm all over his defenders chest to make space throughout the game. Gentry lost it at that call and got T'd (Rondo had gotten one earlier from the bench, he wasn't playing, for calling the refs on their bullshit) Still got to within 4 and then Ian Clark (our guard) gets wiped out (that's the undercut play Gentry was ranting about) and they say no foul, out of bounds, Rockets ball!!! We should have been at the line closing within 2. It was over from there, foul, they shoot 6 pt lead

(edited for being slightly disingenuous ;) )

It was good from Gentry to put the refs on blast though. This is gonna be a brutal week and if teams are allowed to mug AD like that then this season is over

Edit: Here is the Harden call. If that contact is a foul, fine, but be consistent!!!

Glad I got up early to watch this one!

Russ/Adams 2-man game just killed it. Steve with the best offensive game of his career - 2 short of his career high.

Massive win.

The shit Ibaka was doing to try & keep Adams off the boards was hilarious - that tackle into the padding at the end was the icing on the cake.

Plus another installment of "Steven Adams gets hit in the nuts".

But that's a huge win, especially with the T-Wolves & Pelicans having difficult games to come. The Thunder still has a super difficult run in, but they've got a bit of breathing space now and beating the Raptors on the road is damned impressive.
