So this is an interesting one. The NY Times has a new hire, who has a twitter history as follows:

Image

NY Times has defended it thus:

Quote:
Statements in Response to Criticism of the Hiring of Sarah Jeong to the Editorial Board in Opinion
August 2, 2018
Statement from The New York Times

We hired Sarah Jeong because of the exceptional work she has done covering the internet and technology at a range of respected publications.

Her journalism and the fact that she is a young Asian woman have made her a subject of frequent online harassment. For a period of time she responded to that harassment by imitating the rhetoric of her harassers. She sees now that this approach only served to feed the vitriol that we too often see on social media. She regrets it, and The Times does not condone it.

We had candid conversations with Sarah as part of our thorough vetting process, which included a review of her social media history. She understands that this type of rhetoric is not acceptable at The Times and we are confident that she will be an important voice for the editorial board moving forward.

Statement from Sarah Jeong

As a woman of color on the internet, I have faced torrents of online hate, often along this vein:

I engaged in what I thought of at the time of counter-trolling. While it was intended as satire, I deeply regret that I mimicked the language of my harassers. These comments were not aimed at a general audience, because general audiences do not engage in harassment campaigns. I can understand how hurtful these posts are out of context, and would not do it again.

I wonder if we are going to get a trump tweet from this.

I worked with a New Yorker Korean woman once. Holy fcking shit she was aggressive. I suspect she was permanently coked to the gills. 9-12 each morning seemed to be reserved for getting on the phone and screaming at London.

Interesting that this woman did get fired:

I wonder how the NY Times is splicing this.

Hasn't it been known since at least the late 90s - the first wave of the web - that the internet is a terrible medium for context.

There was a baseball player who apologized the other day for some old tweets that were along similar lines; it seems his explanation that he's changed a lot since, has explained it and generally gotten the nod from his teammates and club, has resonated and has not affected his employment. This would seem to be similar circumstances, so fair enough. But I would hope neither would be given much rope / latitude in case they reverted to form.

It's not important anywhere, I say this as a graduate of a few "diversity" courses.

She is Asian. She is claiming to be " a woman of colour". Can we all be "of colour" ? Yes, even the pasty ones.

I'm slightly off white. Cotswold limestone white if I was a Farrell and ball colour.

You think a university educated journalist in their twenties should be held to the same standard as a teenage jock?

His tweets (whilst not defensible) read as someone who who was goofing around with his bros on social media, hers seem genuinely nasty.

Context is everything. If it is, as is suggested, much like yer man Gunn's stuff, then its very stupid and immature but there isn't exactly anything wrong with it.

It's the twats that rush around the place looking for things to be offended by that are the real issue.

She's definitely got some deep-seated issues.

Lots of insinuations about privilege for a woman who went to Berkeley and Harvard.

On that note...

In 1976, the United States government apologized to Japan after (pilot) Tibbets re-enacted the bombing—complete with a mushroom cloud—in a restored B-29 at an air show in Texas.

I'm aware of her claims that she was racially harassed, and yet somehow this makes her racist tweets acceptable. Come on, there is no excuse for them. Worse, I see the alt-left media is rallying in support of her which is just ridiculous.

I notice some of these don't have the little line extending from the top of her profile pic which would indicate that it's a reply...is she just replying to the general oppressiveness the white heteronormative patriarchy has imposed on her?

Granted, given she edited a journal on gender at Harvard, I presume she knows what she's talking about.

NYT Supports New Hire Sarah Jeong After Alt-Right Trolls Accuse Her of “Racist” Tweets
That's not how racism works, guys.
by Chelsea Steiner | 3:17 pm, August 2nd, 2018 200

The alt-right has been emboldened by their successful campaign against James Gunn, after digging up his old tweets and pressuring Disney to fire him. Now, they’re coming for tech reporter Sarah Jeong, who was recently hired to join the editorial board at the New York Times.

Again, the trolls are using Jeong’s old tweets against her, but this time the story is different. Jeong is not a white man; she is an Asian woman writing about tech, which means she exists in the nexus of an ungodly amount of racism, sexism, and other hateful trolling from the Pepes of the world. Jeong’s tweets, a sampling of which can be seen below, make fun of white people and mock white male fragility:

...

Okay people, enough with the pearl-clutching. A tweet reading “#CancelWhitePeople” is hardly racist. It’s a reaction to trolling in a concise 140-tweet soundbite meant to be entertaining and cathartic. Never mind that racism does not apply to a majority group that hasn’t experienced systemic inequality and discrimination (but that’s another column for another day). What’s missing from all this conservative outrage is that these tweets are in response to relentless, actually racist trolling that Jeong receives.

The internet has made the world a worse place in many ways. It has made people more partisan, less tolerant of other views, and it encourages people to hang out with other like minded people who share their same views. Its quite depressing. The amount of people in the moderate centre seems to be shrinking by the day. Instead more and more hard left and hard right nutters spouting intolerant racist drivel. You know it's getting bad when the likes of the New York Times actually make excuses for those types of tweets. Fvcking hell.
