https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Fitzg ... _collision

In all the noise about the Lions, Tower Block fires, Brexit and UK Politics - this seems to have slipped by unnoticed since last Saturday.
The weird thing is, the container ship did a 180 back on itself 25 mins before the collison...

Needless to say conspiracy nutters are having a field day - everything from a nuclear warhead handover that went wrong to N Korea hacked (and hijacked) the Container ship's Navigation control.

But in all seriousness, how do a warship manage to get hit in the open ocean.
Don't they have radar?

Of course they have radar. And sonar all sorts of other gismos.

This is very odd. I'll await further news but it does look like an intended ramming.

Was it not in a shipping lane?

Also, it's my understanding that merchant vessels broadcast their position and that's largely used to track positions etc. Naval vessels don't, so the merchant ship wouldn't have seen them coming as easily (it was also at night, so visual sighting wasn't going to happen until last the moment). You'd imagine that the Naval vessel would have the capability to see the other ship coming long in advance, though...

I don't know the area so not sure of shipping lanes.

The strange bit is the cargo ship going a 180 and heading back.

Look at the track of the container ship - it was heading east, then did a 180 to go back and hit the US ship, then resumed original course.

Cargo ship crewed by Filipinos apparently.

It's in Tokyo right now but the Japanese are not revealing the original destination

This is most odd.

RIP the sailors who lost their lives.
