I also recall that audio off the Oracle boat in race 8 in 2013 captured Ainslie telling Spithill to "shut the fuck up and drive the boat"

Oracle don't have Ainslie to call on this time. Spithill will self destruct.

Thank you, Peter Lester ;)

I've noticed as well, quite often after answering his question in the press conferences Burling will just stare at Spithill, really intimidatory.

Last time they had boat speed. They were blinding fast but control and stability was the issue. Once they got that sorted they were untouchable. This time they have a dog and while they can probably quicken up over the next 5 days I'm not sure they can do it and maintain the same control. This will be the issue with any material change in the foil design.

I'm booking the fuckin parade.

Not yet you're not, not even halfway there yet.

Nope. But Saturday will be very interesting.

That was a great pic of him giving the v sign behind Spit. I really hope he is getting inside Spits head.

The BT commentary of Ken Read and Alastair Eykyn has been glowing for ETNZ. And whilst they haven't been putting the boot into OTUSA, they haven't been as complimentary.

That's the NBC commentary team.

I really like ken reads commentary. Although, sometimes they are not very quick to speak about what is happening on the water. It's a bit strange.

Then BT presenters lead by Clare balding are the ones who have pinned their colours to the mast of everyone ETNZ has been sailing.

Weird. The stream I watch has the BT logo but I get the NBC commentators.

soory, i got that wrong. NAthan outteridge and a guy from team japan are the nbc commentatorrs.

I think Ken read is the global feed commentary which BT is picking up. BT have an on sore crew lead by clare balding

What does this mean? Is this just the angle of boat in relation to the wind? #landlubber

Yes it means the boat is sailing at a steeper angle into the wind i.e. sailing a more direct line towards it's destination versus sailing more sideways across the wind. We appear to be sailing consistently higher than Oracle.

Fair enough, let me reword that; the BT sideline colour commentary team seem all to be for OTUSA.

Is that not the bulk of their viewership?

I would imagine that it's a little like cricket commentary in India; you diss the USA at your peril.

What a bizarre comment. BT sport is a UK channel where the bulk of the viewers would have been hoping that Ainslie was trampling all over Spithill & chums. American audiences will be watching it on CBS. I suspect most British fans [those who aren't stake holders in the event at least] will now be rooting for the Kiwis.

Ok, so it's not the bulk of their viewership, then.

There is a race replay here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cr_Bf1lWhYc - with commentary from Nathan Outteridge and Chris Brady saying that Burling is in Spithills head.

Just about everything Barker was missing, that mental edge.

Barker does seem to be a bit lacking in Mana.

PB when asked in the press conference raised an interesting point that many people seem to overlook. 2013, ETNZ agreed to a layday and it was all she wrote. Despite ETNZ disagreeing with the constant rule changes etc they knew the schedule going into the event and should they reach the AC finals knew there were s 5 day break after 2 days racing. It just so happens the are 3-0 up bit had planned for these 5 days just like OTUSAUS. Whether have enough development in the bank remains to be seen but they have known the time off for a fair while.

We are looking very strong at the moment but the is the America's Cup. I was chatting to my uncle who is a boat builder and he knows a few blokes in the circles around Auckland certain that ETNZ threw the round robin races against OTUSAUS so as not to promote any advantage they have.

Booze, Ken Read and Alastair Eykyn are the BT Sport commentary team. Alastair Eykyn usually does rugby [AP] and tennis and knows sweet fuck all about sailing.

If true that would be funny as Spithill made reference to the fact that they beat ETNZ in the round robin.

It was also a massive risk by ETNZ. I think the most obvious ploy they used against OTUSA was their lack of communication throughout the round robin and the LV series. In the AC races so far there has been a lot more chatter from ETNZ.

Maybe a bit of Aura depletion too, assuming he had one. I don't think Barker ever actually won an Americas cup aside from that last race Coutts gifted him in 2000 when it was already in the bag.

Barker is a very very good sailer. The issue is he's not Sir Russ and Varied was very young when he had to lead a team into a defence after his mentors and brains trust walked out. He lead ETNZ extremely well in 2007 and was really only a squeak away from arresting the AC back from Alinghi. It's almost as if he's the Taine Randell of NZ yachting.

I won't say we've won the thing until it's sitting in its glass case overlooking the Viaduct Basin and even though we're totally dominant to date, it's OTUSAUS. However, you do have to say that right now, our lads have pulled a good one out on OTUSAUS.
In regards to the comms, from what I understand, it's not so much as less chatter as it is to with muted mics etc.

Yeah I'll start counting chickens when the boys are over the line and standing on the dock hoisting the cup and popping champagne.

Until then it's a death race.

Great start again though. And yes, in 2013 we agreed to a lay day requested by Oracle, which practically gifted Oracle the race needed. Not this time, no favours, just foot on throat pushing their head under water.

With fingers crossed, rabbits feet well rubbed, 4 leaf clovers gathered, several chickens goats and various other items offered up in sacrifice and squeaky bum time all the way.

Not sure it's as simple as dropped races and gamesmanship with coms, Oracle beat the other teams also who ended up giving ETNZ a fair run for their money unlike the finals to date.

When did the cyclon machines get switched from being first up prototypes to the finished article? There was a considerable weight saving there, and for sure there have been other constant developments time-lined for the racing schedule that have added edges to the performance.

This lay off is a double edged sword for Oracle. Yes, they built it in as a safety measure, but there is no reason why the opposition can't equally benefit from it, the window was known long enough ahead and be prepared for. Both boats are out of the water today.

Not saying nufink right now though till I'm quite sure it's safe to come out of the fort.

As far as sailing ability goes, I thought ETNZ and OTUSA were virtually the same. Both made mistake but the ETNZ boat is just faster.

Did I read somewhere that TNZ won't commit to any future decisions until they win and if they do they want to go back to more traditional racing instead of these bizzare flying machines...I certainly hope so.

Some sour grapes in Bermuda it seems. Some people have been slashing and removing New Zealand flags. Imagine the outrage if the same was done to the American flag.

Why do you keep putting US at the end of OTUSA's name?

Yeah but they knew they only had to beat Groupama to get through to the semi finals and as it turns out they had a fast boat and qualified top despite 'throwing' two races. They knew that if they were to get through to the AC then they would have to beat OTUSAUS and if we recall 2013 OTUSAUS learnt how to sail their boat by watching ETNZ. They probably figured it was worth the risk. And at the minute they're 3-0 up.

It's not as bad as you think compared to other teams. (Not sure about Slingsby). Most are just a bunch of mercs. Our skipper is an AUS.

Isn't it a criminal charge against deforming the Star Spangled Banner?
Edit: it's not.

If we do manage not to choke. What is the likelihood of Emirates threatening not to sponsor unless it's hosted in Dubai? Zero?

I appreciate it is the NZ boat club who choose. Though, it will be hard to mount a defense without a ready made sponsor.

I thought of all places in the US it would be. But then again they're in Bermuda.

Vandalism is a crime. Though, let's not forget the kiwis who plastered flags all over Ellisons house last time around.
