Plays down the effect of Brexit concerns , and the sheer nastiness of Arlene imo.

God I hope not.
It's only loons who want a united Ireland at this stage.

You'd be very surprised.

No one would support re-unification under any kind of duress, but if our fourth green field wants to join up with us democratically, there would be a deep deep latent support for it imo.

Naive article.

There's no way on gods green earth that 65% of people in the republic will vote for reunification in the face of economic Armageddon, a sustained loyalist terror campaign and the prospect of having earl the beaver return to these shores.

Rfurlong's got it right Cam.
People from Louth might be all for it, but otherwise, nah.

Now that's mean. Loyalists would need British security force collusion to sustain a terror campaign.

There seems to be an assumption that a huge majority of northern Catholics would automatically vote for unification but that has never been the case, and certainly wouldn't be the case now if push came to shove. Even the civil rights movement in the 70's, despite unionist paranoia, wasn't about Irish unity, although it certainly was infiltrated by republican agitators. From reading the likes of Nell McCafferty it's fairly obvious that a large number of Catholics were horrified at the thought of what joining an impoverished RoI would do to their living standards, bad and all as the discrimination in the north was.

In my view it would be economic and social suicide for us to agree to unification, and I suspect the significant majority in the north would vote for independence before unity if/when it comes down to it.

I don't want unification but if confronted with the choice at the ballot box I wouldn't vote against it. I think a lot of people would be in this boat.

Romantically it would be great. It just isn't practical or realistic short to medium term.

The Irish are rejoining the UK?

Good, we can finally drop the unwieldy "& Irish" from the Lions

To be honest, I actually think Dublin and its protectorate (any County bordering it really) should secede.

While unionist and Protestant communities tend to have small families, Catholics and nationalist communities have larger families, due to different attitudes towards contraception. A saying in republican west Belfast in the 1990s was that Catholics would “outbreed” Protestants skewing any referendum on unification.
interesting
is this still a major factor ? what would the population makeup look like in a generation or two ? significant enough shift ?

Yeah, I didn't realize I had no direction till it actually played out.

You'd think me being a quarter Irish would have made me more sympathetic.

Yes but must because they're catholics, that doesn't mean they're guaranteed to want re-unification. A sizeable proportion of catholics are unionist or non alligned.

There's your 50% without looking very hard at all.

Only half of that FF number would support it ...... and probably much less if the price was penury and paramilitaries

I'm skeptical about FF voters being adamant on reunification. SF voters are your classic low info voters, so no arguement there.
