Fiji scrummie goes for a 49 metre penalty shot from in front - it's off to the right

Now they get a try to the #14 Droasese

Sailo converts

NZ 8-7 Fiji

Tupaea has a busting run and scores under the posts for NZ, dragging three defenders

15-7

NZ get an intercept to shut down a Fijian attack in overtime to the halftime break

A couple more plays but that's the whistle ...

NZ lead 15-7 HT

Bit of a hiding there from the second half. Still some not bad signs in the first half for Fiji.

Agreed, they played well.

That NZ team just had too much firepower - some very large sized dudes in the side as well

Cloudy but dry for now. First game underway - interest is really in seeing how long Japan can remain in touch with the NZedders.

The Japanese scrum just dismantled the NZ U20's resulting in a penalty try. Makes me feel better about our performance. That makes it 12 - 7 to NZ. Looks like it will be another example of the bigger, stronger NZ boys dominating in the open but struggling in the scrum. Very similar to Japans first game.

Don't know if the NZ wing actually grounded that. But it's been awarded. 17 - 7 NZ.

Japan 11 fights hard. Their 10 kick passes to a player in space. Passes which is kicked and Japan is in. Conversion missed 17 - 12 NZ.

Christ. NZ in again after being gifted the ball just outside the Japan 22m after a terrible kick from the Japan 10. Try is converted. 24 -12 NZ.

That's more like it. Lovely try by NZ. Japan are trying hard. Play at speed with good skills but just lack the physical presence NZ has that allows them to pull off the big plays. Converted 31 - 12 NZ.

Japan definitely panicking now. Dumb, dumb, dumb play. A cheeky chip/pass kick to no one wearing red and white hoops. But three NZ players who surprise, surprise score. Turning into the expected bloodbath. Converted 38 -12 NZ.

Turnover. Kicked ahead. NZ player burns his chaser and scores untouched. soon to be 45 - 12 NZ. Replay shows he was offside.

And it remains 45 - 12 at the half. Japan started strong playing into what looks like a strong head wind but lost the plot in the 2nd 20 mins of the half.

seems a shame japan lost their heads there, they might of been able to keep it close if they had kept their heads, and if it was close or within two scores going into the second half with strong wind at their backs, it shows how invaluable a decent 9/10 combo is, they often do not have to be flashy just keep their heads and play the %ges

Agreed.

I still think Japan have progressed a fair bit over the last 5 years or so. They're not going to challenge in this tournament but aspects of their play are good, notably the scrum. Need to keep getting competition and working on improving their skills baseline coming through.
