The league team is in shambles, having one guy defect to Tonga literally weeks before the tournament starts and now rumours up to eight more may defect  (most of them are NZ born i hasten to add)

League is a shambles in NZ.

All because the coach had the temerity to ban players for snorting ropes of cocaine after a test

You're naive if you think it's just that - there's a clear lack of leadership at the NZRL at the moment, it's amateur hour with a coach not up to the task and selectors who aren't much better.

As for the eight, two aren't in contention (Manu, Tui), two aren't NZers (Kata, Hurrell), but a couple of the others will be decent losses.

The irony of it is that the current coach of the Kiwis rolled a Kiwi coach previously for not being up to it.

Taumalolo wants to represent both Tonga and NZ into the future and the League World Cups "fluid" qualification rules allow it.
I see Andrew Fifita has now pulled out of the Australian team to play for Tonga as well.
Good on them.

I can't remember. I just recall neither were actually charged with anything by the police, which I don't completely understand if it was all clear cut and caught red-handed type of thing.
Dunno, least they weren't bashing their wives I suppose.

I personally don't draw much into it. I just see it as young guys with a lot of disposable income doing stupid impulsive shit. No one died, no real harm done bar the stone-throwers and their perfect life and impeccable moral standards wounded. I also see why NZ League would shut them out for their dumbassery.

TBH if Samoa and Tonga had access to every eligible player then they would have very strong teams.

Looks like the tournament is split into 4 pools with the top 2 in each pool qualifying for the 1/4 finals.
With Samoa,Tonga and Scotland in New Zealands pool,NZ will want to hit top form straight away.

Yep, we've got two players convicted of assault in our team but Bromwich and Proctor banned for recreational drugs.

Nice work NZRL.

Andrew Fifita! Christ Tonga is going to have a stronger team than the kiwis

I can see this going off the rails. Too many egos doing it for the wrong reasons.

I used to love league. The old Winfield Cup. The old State of Origin where fighting was pretty much expected and both NSW and QLD were neck and neck and very even. Then the Warriors came along and by default I had to support them and my hopes were high, for them and NZ league. Fast forward to the mid 2000s and State of Origin was a one sided bore fest (to me anyway) so I stopped watching that. I also stopped watching any other matches other than Warriors games. Then fast forward to 2017 and I even stopped watching the Warriors.

The ANZAC test was the last game of league I watched and the pathetic display by the Kiwis and the ridiculous behavior of two senior players afterwards left a very sour taste in my mouth regarding league. I only realised/remembered there was a League World Cup about a week ago. And then all this shit with Taumalolo just confirms what I guess I had already realised a while ago - league f**king sux these days. I wouldn't even care if it was wiped off the face of the planet tomorrow.

The Kiwis vs Tonga first up should have some spice. To think, we were the top side in the world (top of a very small heap) a few years ago and now we are a feeder nation. It's a case study in mismanagement.

Why be a pessimist in these things.

Imagine if the NZ league team were like the All Blacks!

I actually think there is significant talent amongst those that are or could be eligible.

I see we have NZ v Tonga and Samoa v Tonga down here.

May draw a crowd then (but not me)
