How good would it be if we pulled off something similar again. Not sure I could contain myself.

I'm going to be with the inlaws in Belfast, probably watching the game in a pub. I will definitely not be able to contain myself if something like that happens again.

I expect lots of free drink when we lose

Just back from a week in the French Alps so finally time to reflect on the massive Calcutta Cup win last week.

Watched the game in a hotel lobby in Val Thorens slowly going berzerk in the company of loads of bemused Dutch and Danes at check-in peak time. Just me and my two sons, glued to the big screen at reception while the desk dolly kept telling my increasingly irate wife that our apartment was not yet ready as it had not been cleaned. This may have been the first time in my life I was fully on-side with work-shy cleaning staff. And the desk dolly may in fact have been a highly sensitive intellectual as she conjured up our apartment keys right at the full-time whistle.

Sorry for the lack of insight - par for the course, aye - but everything that needed saying has already been said ten times over. SCOTLAND!

J Gray's performance Vs England was perhaps his best for Scotland. If he'd not played so well I'd have liked to see R Gray and Gilcho start as both are impactful.

Fwiw, when's R Gray's time in France up? Surely at some point he'll want to be offered the home comforts the SRU offer. Is it this summer? Would be ideal pre WC.

And finally his tackles were dominant. Too often we've marvelled over how many tackles Gray has made but we've been beaten up. Finally he dominated contact which is why he looked better than Itoje and Launchbury.

I'd not have R Gray in the side. He's only played one game in a long time - although I suppose you could say the same for Swinson. Maybe bench him but Gilchrist is having a v good season so he deserves the start.

Gilchrist has finally had a good game for Scotland, when the Grays have been solid performers for a while now. Johnny fell off from his initial impact but is now back.

Itoje is struggling to back up last years form, it happens.

I would like the Grays starting if all are fit with Gilchrist off the bench.

Thought Gilco was pretty average against England, in fact if we had lost he would have been taking pelters.

Jonny was better v England, but I still didn’t think he was as good as he can be. All about opinions, I guess.

I think that was more a team defensive issue than one player. Blind side with equal or greater numbers, but of forwards vs backs, and they just sat back for England to run a line. Small note Gilchrist won the first penalty of the match which was pretty important I guess.


On another topic, the 7s team have once again conspired to start a tournament well, narrowly losing to the Cup finalists in the last play, to getting knocked out in Shield semis rather limply in the same manner vs Canada.

Gilchrist is a smart player, and a good leader on the park, but lacks power at this level. We scrum much better with Richie and he has much more impact in the loose (mostly defensively it has to be said). With him and Nel back our scrum might even become a weapon instead of damage limitation.

That said, I agree it's probably too soon for him.

Do we think Nel should start against Ireland? Bit harsh on Berghan who has been great and whose smashing of people at close quarters may be invaluable.

Berghan to start with Nel on bench for me.

I think there's a fair bit of planning going on for the 2019 RWC. In his first year in the job Toony's managed to get a decent look in camp at pretty much all the realistic candidates for the squad for Japan - even the bolters have probably been taken care of with the likes of Fagerson jr., Shiel, Hastings, Graham, Crosbie being invited to train at various times. Good to know how everyone responds to these kind of environments and interacts with the coaching staff etc.
