Hey, apologies for trying to be polite. Nobody else seems to be interested in your effort and I had a go at a sympathy nibble.

:((

I think it's a problem that needs to be addressed.

I feel that the casual accusation that MSM lie routinely and that they peddle fake news is profoundly damaging, not just to the institutions themselves, but to the right that we have to be informed.

But they do. This is a fact

People naively wanting to pretend its not the case causes the damage. Not the fact that the media lie and lie and lie to promote their owners (or main advertisers) interests. The naive need to open their eyes and see the world as it is. Or in other words grow up.

Mass media ever was working on the side of vested interest. When they did not, oppression soon followed.

To look at this away from politics for a second, recently in the NHL, the star of the game received a bad hit that put him out with a concussion. A noted hack journalist from the star's team with press credentials wrote in response that this was pre-meditated, wants the other team's star player banned even though he took no part in the hit.

However this...

Quote:
Makes you wonder what that closed-door meeting called by Capitals players was really about after their blowout defeat in Game 2, huh? Not really. If they say it wasn’t about eliminating Crosby, the Capitals are liars. And if that sounds like an unfair accusation to make of the Capitals, then please consider my decade of experience covering a sport I love and a league I really, really, really want to give the benefit of the doubt. Sorry, but I cannot give the Capitals, or the NHL, any benefit. And I doubt very much there wasn’t an intent to injure Crosby when this series shifted to Pittsburgh.

...is straight up libel unless he has some evidence, like a source from that team telling him, which, hell no, they didn't.

If you want to get rid of fake news, people that print lies need to be punished.

[Redacted - Insert usual Silver Bullshit here]

Well, then, give me examples.

As I said in my previous reply to you (which you have appeared to have ignored), you are accusing me of naively believing everything I read, yet you expect me to believe your conspiracy theories without evidence.

No problem in broadening the scope to include sports.

As sportsfans we may sometimes invest too much emotion into our reading of whichever game we follow, but yes, I can see that the piece to which you refer is probably libellous. In which case, they could sue, couldn't they?

However, the balance between freedom of expression, incitement, press freedom and public interest is extremely tricky.

And, in view of the consideration that it's very easy for every Tom, Dick, etc. to set up a blog or twitter account, it's bound to be an issue that will receive more and more attention.

Facebook apparently removing tens of thousands of accounts set up to influence various current elections.

Quote:
Facebook has deleted “tens of thousands” of accounts and made changes to its newsfeed algorithm in an attempt to battle fake news, responding to criticism over the distribution of false information on its massive network.

Facebook has come under intense pressure to tackle the spread of false stories, which came to prominence during the US presidential election last year when many inaccurate posts were widely shared on it and other social media services.

Facebook suspended 30,000 accounts in France ahead of the first round of its presidential election last month and uses outside fact-checkers in the country.

The UK called snap general elections in June, and Germany is set to vote in September.

In the UK, Facebook launched a British newspaper advertising campaign to warn users of the danger of fake news, the latest drive by the social media giant to tackle malicious information ahead of the national election.

Starbird's research points to an intentional use of disinformation to muddle thinking and "undermine trust in information just generally".

She says big questions remain, like who might be behind any possible intentional disinformation campaigns and to what extent these messages are coordinated.

But she says she is concerned that as these fringe theories gain traction in the public sphere "it is not healthy for society

"When there's no shared reality, there's no set of facts, society at large can become easily manipulated," she says.

"Undermining trust in information generally".

If people have child like trust in what they are told that is dangerous. Distrusting information and considering the agenda of the persons producing and sharing it is the healthy default setting.

Certainly, it's patently obvious that one cannot believe everything one reads on the Internet, but it's equally obvious that, as a tool for gathering information, the Internet is an incomparable resource.

Wikipedia is a good example; it's greatest strength is also a fundamental weakness. The spread of diverse authors means that the information disseminated reaches a consensus via peer revue which should ensure it's trustworthiness. However, because anyone can edit it, false information can be inserted which can erode that.

My own position is that the major News Outlets cannot be caught out in lies because if that happens and the public believes that it cannot trust them, then they are worthless.
