Great try from Lloyd. Did not have much room to work with and used strength to overpower McLelland. The Ontario boys on the Selects are destroying the Arrows.

Canada Select playing better than Canada of late. Not the sharpest and too many silly mistakes/turnovers, but supporting well and carrying well. If they'd had a workable lineout before now the lead might well have been more.

22 had the perfect inside line on the initial break, but stayed tucked in behind as if he was saying: "I'm here to ruck when you get tackled, mate." Tight line, little pop pass and I reckon he was in.

I didn't pay too much attention, but I thought it sounded like their bias was toward the Canada Selects? I won't ever bash Hugh Bladen again for sounding boring. These two are perfect for NPR.

I have 19-0 for the Selects. I missed their second try. I could not see if the callback on the Arrows' 'try' was forward.

The Arrows were blasted up front. Their forwards will be sore.

I think Ciulini can still be a player, but as noted above, he has to get in better shape.

Rumball and Keith my players of the game.

A good job of coaching by the Selects' staff.

Lloyd and Davis did have some good touches out wide. I think one of them will have a chance for Canada in June. Canada's centre stocks are poor at the domestic level. Paris, Hassler, DTH, Braid, Trainor, Blevins, Evans is a backline that is absolutely fine for a lower ranked Tier Two nation.

The stand has a 3,000 spectator capacity. Anything close to full and that's a fairly good turnout.

I'd take Dallen Stamford over those two every day of the week. Which is saying something as Dallen shits me big time. They actually make the game boring to watch with their endless dribble. They were the same against the Mystics. Dull, listless and completely void of enthusiasm. Either the Arrows need to source other commentators or these two need to really tune into the likes of Dan Power and Co. to see how to find a better mix of informative and engaged.

I do not think it was announced. If the crowd was 2500+, one would think the Arrows would shout about it.

The game was of a poor standard, pretty disappointing. It was typical of the ARC stuff we have seen for the past few years. I thought it was a cheap move by Jones and RC to remove Ciulini and Lloyd from the Arrows, especially the former, who RC has not been interested in for the past 2-3 years. The Arrows did not need the removals. They also give a hint that RC and the Arrows are in cahoots, which is what those pulling for the Arrows do not want to see. Canada Selects did not even have cover at Lock, which is all one needs to know of Jones' thoughts on the second row stocks in the BC premier.

Sorry, meant to post about the match earlier, but long weekend, etc.

I attended the match, great atmosphere and a good venue. My only complaint might be that the pitch was (i) a bit further away because of the running track around it (a minor pet peeve of mine) and (ii) also did not seem 70m wide but maybe that was the perspective. But very comfortable viewing. That said, my preference would be for the Arrows to play at the newly re-turfed field at Lamport stadium. Transportation, nightlife, venues to go to afterwards, etc.

My guess at the crowd size was 1k-1.5k. Which imho is pretty good considering it was a somewhat hastily arranged match, and the Friday evening of a long weekend.

But everyone in a good mood. Definitely more support for the Arrows than Canada Selects. Guys were playing for positions / contracts, that's for sure; no quarter asked and none given. Nothing overtly dirty but they were putting in some good hits. Selects' tight 5 were well ahead of the Arrows players and match was decided there, imho. Both scrumhalves were excellent. Wind was a bit of an issue, was blowing south to north (i.e. behind Canada first half).

Very very enjoyable though. It was a fun outing. Definitely will continue to attend these

That field looked narrow watching the game on the stream. Gliksten looks to be a snappy scrummie. His pack was pushed back, but as you said, he did well. The Ontario boys for the Selects (Ferguson, Rumball, Lloyd, Ciulini, Keys) were good.

Rosters below for the Selects/Arrows game tomorrow. Five Calgary boys starting for Canada - hornets will be chuffed. Expecting much more running in this game. Will see if Blevins and LeSage can do damage in the centres. The backline play in last week's game was poor. Lemkus starting for the Arrows. It appears a couple of changes/switches in the Arrows' backs. Dillon Goos as lock cover for Ontario. A name from the U20s several years ago. He seemed a promising player, then.

Canada Selects roster to face Ontario Arrows:

1. Noah Barker – James Bay AA/BC Bears (Courtenay, BC)

OttawaKat, do you coach at all?

One of my coach ed heroes is going to be at TERP on Friday the 15th. I wonder how many will actually show given that (I think) he won't have much of a recognisable name amongst the vast majority of coaches, yet he's up there with the best in the biz. I saw a pic of a Rugby Ontario clinic recently from Ottawa and there were only a handful of people there. Not sure what sort of draw Richard Shuttleworth will have, especially as I saw this by accident on twitter (and I follow the guy).

I missed the first five minutes because Rugby Canada forgot where it put on its stream. I had the sound down, so missed the usual BS.

If I remember right it was something along the lines of 58-28 for the Selects: which means an amateur provincial team that practices a couple of hours per week put 28 on our A team.

McRorie was, for me, clearly the best player on the field. As expected, Blevins and LeSage did more at centre than the BC pair last week. There were good battles at the scrum. I thought Keys was the pick of the forwards. I thought the Ottawa boy, Ng, did a solid job at Hooker. For the Arrows, Richardson did some good work with the ball. McLelland scored a couple of trys for Ontario, but the guy seems slight, which hurts him on D, at this level. Lloyd has twice got the best of him in the last games. McLelland has nifty wheels, though.

The Ottawa one is the evening before the Canada/Russia test. The word should get around. I thought Twin Elms was close to being condemned? The drive out there is nice and I liked looking at the land. Although, it is a bit far from the Capital.

Oh, don't tease me about TERP being condemned. I've only heard about reno efforts and the perpetual fundraising. I think the death of it would be a positive step forward for rugby in the Nat Cap, forcing them to actually base themselves in their communities. (I don't have numbers to back it, but suspect that Barrhaven Scottish are the healthiest club in the city because they are smack-dab in the middle of Barrhaven.)

For the uninitiated, the grounds are pretty close to where the [416] is on the map. Funnily enough, the closest club to it has their own grounds. Everyone else has their home games there. :?

I'd be up for that if I didn't live in the opposite direction. Takes me 45 mins to get home and being a morning person, I get drowsy around 10pm. Not great for driving down the relatively straight and boring 416.

Article below from Wales on Hassler:

https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/rug ... e-14723923

He is the biker who finds himself parked up with no road to ride on, even though he has plenty of petrol in the tank.

It is probably tough being Jeff Hassler right now.

He is the wing who for five seasons provided the shock and awe in the Ospreys’ backline. It used to be said the sternest test of courage a man could face involved catching a high ball as the Pontypool pack emerged out of the night and thundered forward like the hounds of hell.

But in recent times it has taken some guts for anyone to stand firm when in the direct line of the half-man, half-missile that is Hassler.

Would-be tacklers knew there was next to no chance of a sidestep. But the impact would be maximum force. Nerves were tested to breaking point.

Startlingly, it is possible rugby may not see much more of the Canadian wing.

He wants to keep playing but he doesn’t have a contract after his departure from the Ospreys and that has forced him to contemplate a possibility that a power-packed player in his prime at 26 really shouldn’t be contemplating.

“If I don’t get a deal then the reality is it will be hard to continue,” he says.

“I want to keep going because I don’t think it’s time for me to finish, but circumstances are out of my control and we’ll have to see what happens. My agent is looking but it’s not a great time to be without a contract, especially if you’re a Canadian in an era when countries are imposing quotas on how many foreign players clubs and regions can carry.

“I think I still have plenty to offer and I will be joining up with the Canada squad next week for our summer programme of internationals.

“But beyond that it’s uncertain.

“Right now, it’s just great to be at home with the family.”

How did it come to this? That Hassler did a fine job for the Ospreys can be seen from the former grid-iron man winning the social media player of the year award at the region’s end-of-season dinner. Fans relished his ultra-direct style and when he announced he would be departing, there were scores of messages on his Twitter feed bemoaning his impending exit and wondering exactly what had led to it.

Until now, Hassler has largely kept his counsel on the matter.

But he has nothing to hide and insists he has no regrets about what happened.

“The situation was that I had to let the Ospreys know my intentions as early as last November, whether to exercise a release clause or let the contract simply roll over.

"I had been at the region for five seasons and while I had enjoyed my spell hugely and made a lot of friends, I thought it might be time to see if there was anything else out there.

“I stayed in touch with Steve Tandy and promised him I would keep him informed of my plans.

“Steve told me they needed to know what my situation was for definite and by then I’d come to the conclusion I wanted to stay.

“But then things went a bit weird. We lost to Clermont Auvergne in the Champions Cup. I woke up a couple of days later in Canada to learn Steve had gone. Then I was hearing different voices (at the Ospreys) and the rest is history. George North was eventually signed up.

“I don’t regret what happened.

“I knew what the result could be when I told the Ospreys I wanted to see what was out there.

“I did not anticipate it would be this tough to get a contract, but I guess it’s the way the market goes. Second rows and props are more in demand than wings, especially of the Canadian variety, and many clubs and regions would have spent their budgets for next season.”

Hassler is a free spirit with a love of biking — in Wales he would regularly take off and explore when the mood took him — but as his return home beckoned he posted a picture of his 2013 Triumph Scrambler on Twitter with a message urging any would-be buyers to get in touch. “Pains me to have to say goodbye,” his tweet ran.

Subliminally, he might have been talking about his exit from the Ospreys as well as the loss of his faithful mode of travel — we can’t be sure.

Anyway, since arriving back in Canada he has been enjoying some well-earned downtime, hiking with his dad. He doesn’t seem the sort to lose sleep over anything, not even his rugby career.

“What will I do if a contract offer doesn’t come in? Probably travel for a year or two,” he says.

“It’s something I have always told myself I would do at some point.

“Long term I will perhaps go into property investment.

“I’d like to carry on playing rugby right now.

“But if nothing happens on that front it’s not the end of the world.”

Hassler enjoyed his time in Wales, on and off the pitch. “I have great memories,” he says.

“I made some top friends, such as Aaron Jarvis, Josh Matavesi and Kieron Fonotia, while I already had a great mate in Tyler Ardron.

“Aside from the injuries, the rugby largely went well for me, too. I had the chance to play alongside some world-class players and it was a brilliant experience.

“The best player I played alongside? It’s a tough question, but I would probably have to say Justin Tipuric.

“He really stood out during my time with the Ospreys.

“Week-in, week-out he produced an incredibly high level of performance without seeking a word of praise. He is just a quiet guy who is humble and goes about his business with the minimum of fuss.

“And he has tremendous skill and versatility. He could play anywhere in the side and do an excellent job.

“All round, he’s just a great guy.”

Hassler admits he was taken aback by all the support he received once it became known he was leaving the Ospreys: “The fans there were always brilliant to me.

“Their support meant the world and I can’t thank them enough.”

All good things must end.

But Hassler leaves behind many fond memories.

Urging clubs and regions to reach for their cheque books and sign up his old team-mate, Toulon-bound Rhys Webb called Hassler a “try-scoring beast”.

Defences will be pleased if no one does opt to snap up the World Cup man.

But it will be rugby’s loss.

NPC (sorry, I always forget what it is called now) for Olmstead? They do not pay all that much, do they? The move has worked for Ardron. The players are finding out the life of pro rugby as a NQP, unless or until you are a DTH or a Cudmore. Until we can pay them something decent out here, the current situation will be their lot. The Wolf Pack could sure use Hassler and Olmstead. :)

Apparently he is doing this with the aim of landing a super rugby contract (both parties interested just want to see how he goes first), so it is not as short termed as it seems.

That's a real shame for Hassler. I hope it works out for him. I wonder if his agent gave him bad advice, in that he thought the market for him was better than it turns out it is? It's clear someone (him or his agent or both) misread it when he didn't immediately signal to the O's he'd like to come back
