Blues wing Matt Duffie has escaped a suspension after the first red card of his Super Rugby career.

The 26-year-old rugby league convert was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in the Blue's 30-22 loss to the Stormers in Cape Town on Saturday (NZ Time).

Duffie's first yellow came for repeated team infringing - four successive penalties early in the match. His second for diving on a player on the ground.

A Sanzaar judicial committee has upheld the red card but said it did not warrant further punishment.

Sanzaar said in a statement on Monday the foul play review committee had accepted Duffie's guilty plea.

The committee comprising Nigel Hampton QC (chairman), Stefan Terblanche and Stephen Hardy assessed the case.

"Having conducted a detailed review of all the available evidence, including all camera angles, as well as the player's explanations of both incidents and submissions from his legal representative, Aaron Lloyd, the foul play review committee upheld the red card," Hampton said in a statement.

"With respect to sanction the committee ruled, after considering a number of factors, including the effect of the Red Card both on the match and on the player's team, and [Duffie] being off the field for some 25 minutes for 'technical' offences, that the ordering off warranted no further sanction in these particular circumstances."

"The player is therefore free to play and will serve no additional suspension"

Not a red card, tho... :uhoh:

Veldsman needs to get out of the sport. He is a fucking joke, and always has been.
You Kiwis are really special. Moaning and groaning after a loss. Chin up Boet we struggle in NZ and take it on the chin.

Really chuffed with the win. After the big losses on tour for the guys to have the mental strength to hang in there was great. In the first half our players did not look confident with ball in hand.

The calls did mostly go our way but there were wrong calls both ways. 9 out of 10 times the Eben yellow would not have been given. The Blues got a lot of momentum and scored some points during that period. Treeby should have been at least a yellow, if not more, no arguments and yes, that probably would have swung the balance of the game. Duffy's 2nd yellow was a yellow all day, the first I am not so convinced about. I thought the Blues got away with a lot taking out defenders ahead of the play and holding back a player is a cynical and could also have resulted in a yellow. I have to say I dont know the rules well enough to have an opinion on the Notshe try. Watching the slowmo his knees are both in the air. One touches the ground briefly then lifts again but I could not see when he touches the ball - was it while his knee was on the ground for that split second, really not sure.

The positives for me was that we scrummed well and our forwards showed some good energy in the last 20 minutes. The win will do a lot for the team mentally. Just in time to beat "Freestate by the Sea".

We're on a different page here. I'm not happy at all at the amount of dumb in the Stormers outfit! The Kiwis lost their right winger for almost 40 minutes and we have one of the best left wingers in the game in open space. How many did we use him to attack down the left side.....? ZERO.

Tactically this team is clueless.

Ag, we are used to the kiwis wanting (and mostly getting) preferential treatment, special treatment for "special" children ... leave them at it, it is the only way they will feel good about himself.

Duffie plead guilty so he wouldn't get additional time because everyone knew the call was bad. The committees cite but the rarely overturn a card. I don't really watch other SR games just the blues but this ref handed Stormers the win. When the pendulum swings the other and the Stormers get tucked, I hope is a meatless match not a key one.

This backline wouldn't inspire confidence against the Taranaki girls U13 team.
This leaves the Stormers very thin out wide, as Dillyn Leyds will in all likelihood move to fullback this weekend to cover for Marais, while JJ Engelbrecht could come in on the wing along with Raymond Rhule, with Damian de Allende and EW Viljoen in midfield.

More than you know. A man-bun sporting JJ that Sard has a poster of in his closet is the best we can do in our backline atm. Yes, it hurts.

Senatla is so wasted at the Stormers....he will never make Springbok 15s....far too many talented individuals forging names for themselves and in this outfit he is just going backwards.
What he should do is go back to 7s.....they need him more there and he will stand out a lot more.

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I'm actually starting to feel sorry for the Stormers and their injury list. You'd think it's the last week of the season.

Not very optimistic about the Stormers' chances, but I think this will be a high-scoring game.

English:
Cape Town - The embattled Stormers have lost the services of wing Seabelo Senatla to a groin injury, while several players have been laid low by flu.

Coach Robbie Fleck confirmed on Tuesday that Senatla could be sidelined for up to six weeks with a groin injury, while fullback SP Marais is likely to miss the next two games - against the Blues and Reds - due to a rib injury.

This has necessitated the Stormers to recall Craig Berry from his loan spell at the Cheetahs.

Fleck also said that flu had disrupted their preparation in the last week.

“Pieter-Steph du Toit actually passed his concussion test last week, but couldn’t face the Highlanders due to flu. Damian de Allende and EW Viljoen were also sick,” Fleck told Netwerk24.

The coach added: “Some members of the team management also got sick and now a couple of other boys have it and are resting up in bed. The guys pitched for a training session and a meeting (on Tuesday) but we had to send half the management members home as well as a good few players so it was pointless doing anything.”

The Stormers team to face the Blues will be named on Thursday.

The Capetonians have won only one out of four games in this year's Super Rugby competition.
Fleck almost seems helpless in his response.

Really should make a new thread but w/e.

Why isn't Perofeta starting I wonder? Ioane is at 13, wonder if he'll be playing there for the Blues all year. Could develop a handy partnership with SBW.

I hope Umaga doesn't think he provides better value from the bench. He'll be the regular starter soon enough, I reckon. Just hope the Blues' season isn't completely shot before he gets his chance.
