That's looking very very bad. Seems to have spread very quickly and lots of witnesses seem to be indicating a lot of people didn't get out.

God it looks horrible.

Seems to have consumed the building at an alarming speed and councils were supposed to have checked safety regulations after the one in 2009.

Looks like they've clad the tower in a combustible material from the way it's burning?

I just saw an interview with a resident who said within 45 minutes of him first noticing the fire the whole building was on fire.

Predicted to happen.

Quote:
In the last twenty years and despite the terrifying power surge incident in 2013 and recent fire at Adair Tower, the residents of Grenfell Tower have received no proper fire safety instructions from the KCTMO. Residents were informed by a temporary notice stuck in the lift and one announcement in a recent regeneration newsletter that they should remain in their flats in the event of fire. There are not and never have been any instructions posted in the Grenfell Tower noticeboard or on individual floor as to how residents should act in event of a fire. Anyone who witnessed the recent tower block fire at Shepherds Court, in nearby Shepherd’s Bush, will know that the advice to remain in our properties would have led to certain fatalities and we are calling on our landlord to re-consider the advice that they have so badly circulated.

The authorities who allow a building like this to be inhabited should be charged.

A building like this in a first world city is totally unbelievable. WTF?

Quade Cooper looking for a laptop?

Sorry, too soon.

Looks bloody horrific - did I hear reports they'd been working on the gas supply recently?

Reports of no communal fire alarms, just smoke detectors in flats. Sounds like the council have done everything possible to make that place a deathtrap.

Fingers crossed for those in hospital. Reading about a mother holding a child out the window was pretty grim.

Sounds terrible. The reports about the cladding spreading the fire is startling.

Jesus. Horrific. Given the time, scale and ferocity of the fire, and the eyewitness reports, looks likely that there are a large number of fatalities.

UK not having the best of runs at the moment.

The Shanghai fire was started when dodgy welders lit the insulation they were installing and basically the whole building went up immediately.

Also if a fire catches on quickly at a lower level then you don't have much chance at a higher floor regardless of what fancy alarm systems you might have. With no central fire suppression system you are goosed at the higher levels of these older buildings. This is fairly common and a big risk.

We have the technology to prevent anything like this, it shouldn't even be a possibility in this day and age.

If this was arson, the person responsible should be publicly hung. BBC reporting numerous casualties.

Well it's sounding like the root cause is the vulnerability of the building and the people in it rather than a fact a small fire started, deliberately or otherwise.

I also don't get why the press / TV are so reluctant to discuss the scale. The Fire Service and plod will already know if there were 100s of casualties, which looks very likely.

This will also create s$$$$$$$quillions in building remediation in all those cities with similar housing.

Just imagine living in one of those other 3 towers on that estate, knowing you and your kids are sleeping in a deathtrap too.

The continent is covered in tower blocks. They're not rebuilding them.
