Most of those Samoan and Tongan players are really kiwis. Born and bred here, poached later by the cynical PI unions.

Is there a reason why there's a disproportionately large number of Tongans vs other PIs playing in Japan?

I'd always thought there were a load more Irish plying their trade outside of Ireland.

Who are the 9 welshmen in the Top 14? I can name 1 in Aaron Jarvis at Clermont and he's coming back to Wales (with Webb heading out so it'll be 1 by my reckoning next season too).

A shit tonne wind up with high school scholarship type deals, before eventually representing the nation. Were quite a few in Japan's losing effort to the NZ U20.

Probably half the Samoans and Tongans are NZ born and another decent amount NZ-schooled. Not to mention the NZ-born NH poaches.

The info was updated in Feb, might be out of date now

Aled Brew   Biarritz Olympique
Ben Broster   Biarritz Olympique
Lee Byrne   ASM Clermont
Luke Charteris   USA Perpignan
James Hook   USA Perpignan
Dan Lydiate   Racing Metro
Kieran Murphy   CA Brive
Mike Phillips   Aviron Bayonnais, Racing Metro
Jamie Roberts   Racing 92

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Top_14_foreign_players

Edit: Seems this list is completely out of date. Will re-do the Top 14 list

That is massively out of date.

Brew is at Bath, Byrne retired (had been at Dragons), Charteris - Bath, Hook - Ospreys (having been at Gloucester the previous few seasons), Lydiate - Ospreys, Murphy - Ealing, Phillips - retired (having been at Sale), Roberts - Quins. Broster I think is retired...so 9 is really wrong for the last season.

Just checked and Broster did retire...but he was playing for Perpignan who were relegated anyway, so even if he hadn't retired he would still not be eligible for that list.

There's bucket loads in the Championship and a good few more in ProD2. Mostly academy rejects.

There are a handful of Europeans and a host of PIs

Another out of date list.

Some of those you can't count as they are English but welsh qualified (Max Clark, Bateman, Nott, Huw Taylor), many are back in wales or retired (Henson, Ian Evans, Hook, Gerard Ellis) and many are not with Premiership teams.

It was more to show that i will be way more than 24. Unless the table is showing only those players that have moved away to other countries. But even then, you'd have to discount the likes of Tomos Francis.

There are plenty in the Championship or in Top 14 D2, which would be outside that list.

What about foreign playered playing in the SH countries?

Ireland has at least 1 playing Super rugby in New Zealand. It has 1 playing Super Rugby in Australia.. former Leinster squadie Tom Sexton. With Western Force now apparently.

I think it's pretty close these days - off the top of my head I get to this.

Roberts (Harlequins-Bath), Charteris, Brew, Priestland, Allinson, Harry Davies, Owen Williams, Moriarty, Hibbard, Marc Jones, Joe Jones, WillGriff John, Day, Liam Williams, Dollman, Francis, Gareth Owen, North, Sam Lewis, Josh Adams, Thomas Young...and Tommy Reffell and Rhys Davies from the under 20s last night.

Who am I missing? I can imagine there might be some academy players I don't know about, but those are the main ones I can think of.

There'll be loads that are 'welsh qualified'. Like Ryan Edwards at Bristol. It all depends what your criteria is here.

The table says Ireland has 1 foreign player playing Pro14. What goes that mean?

Ireland has supplied a few foreign players too. Thinking 1 or 2 to the USA and also Canada.

Bristol I didn't count as they have been championship this year.

I agree - the definition makes a massive difference. If you go for welsh qualified as opposed to welsh then you get guys like Greg Bateman who are qualified for more than one, Harry Randall, Max Davies, George Nott...but I worked on the basis of you have to have come through a welsh club or be playing at least for the under 20s (like Reffell for example).

You included Francis though. It's just a messy, difficult exercise due to the complexity of "nationality"

I think by the point that you are a welsh international you kind of have to pick someone as 'welsh' as opposed to welsh qualified...I take your point, but I think you have to be limited in the definition otherwise it gets ridiculous.

The only NH player in Oz I can think of (qualified in NH not Aus) is Parling.

For those interested in Canadian contributions, we're not so relevant any more. :( I'd wager that there are more Romanians in these leagues.

There are more Zimbabweans (2) Lithuanians and Namibians (1 each) in the AP. :)

Japan - 0
Pro 14 - 1 (1 other released)
Top 14 - 0
Aviva Prem - 0 (1 moved to Glasgow, 1 released, 1 relegated)
Super Rugby - 1

It, hopefully, will start looking better again Nieghorn. Apparently we have a 9 at a Welsh Pro12 Academy side. We also have a few guys at Pau Academy (both very promissing). Also Olmstead has gone to NZ on a NPC contract in hopes of landing a Super rugby contract.

Was Olmstead released by Newcastle? I couldn't help but think if he's been released by them... a NPC team okay, but Super? ... yah, nah.

Sounds like it was more him wanting to leave. He played well in the second half and definitely stepped up. I do think that Northern Hemisphere rugby is more suited to his game though. Not sure if he was succeed as well in the south but good luck to him.

He has an interested super rugby side, they just want to see how he goes first.
