Dunno how many of the Chiefs' Maori were due to back up for this match but I'd imagine Lowe and Mackenzie will want to get back on the paddock ASAP

This was the one game I thought the Lions could run into serious trouble. Based on the Waikatian performances in Rotorua tonight I think that initial optimism has to be reconsidered.
Still, the Chiefs can turn it on when they flick the switch and that's probably how they'll have to go into this game.

We'll be playing 5th choice players, called up because they happen to be in the vicinity. This will be a 50 pointer.

Add Messam and TKB to the hall of shame list.

Ken Barlow will be seething, if he'd only lifted that right arm.

Fitting send off for the Duck if this is his last season.

Really weakened Chiefs team, missing ten starting players that I can see, Brodie Retallick, Sam Cane, Nathan Harris, Liam Messam, Aaron Cruden, Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Charles Ngatai, Anton Lienart-Brown, Damian McKenzie and James Lowe. Still, I'm sure Rennie will get the best out of the motley collection of debutants, rookies and has-beens that he has at his disposal.

One more wing and it would be the entire backline. You omitted Michael Leitch, who will be playing for the 2nd test vs Ireland, so the entire top choice backrow is missing too.

Surprised Ngatai, Macca & Lowe aren't backing up. It's not like they did anything last night...TKB I presume is with Ab's

 Are you one of those fans that only watches the ball? The MABs had just 20% of the ball, they would have tackled their rings off. Not to mention all the work those players would have been asked to do at ruck time.

Lawes back. You'd think the players starting there wont feature in the 23 at the weekend for the most part

i'd be interested in the numbear of tackles those 3 made....I can only recall Lowe dropping the ball or kicking it out on the full....in seriousness I thought they'd want to back up and reckon they probably could unless injured. Once in a lifetime opportunity to play lions twice

That bench.

Surely someone like Jon Barclay would do a job on the bench, or is he not Welsh enough?

No Jonathan Joseph!!

On the bench for the first team. Extremely surprised that Liam Williams hasn't made the first team. I'd have him as better than all the other 3.

Hope not - I hope the Chiefs make a solid contest of it.

I reminded a bit of the Reds-Lions game at Suncorp in 2013; altho' the Chiefs have more top-liners missing than the Reds did (7 in Wobs camp*), plus the 2017 Lions have had more games against decent-ish oppo.

Best of luck in any case, and looking forward to what could be a ball-tearer.

*I checked of course. My memory isn't up to this kind of shit.

Two games in two days against an elite selection featuring some of the world's best players? Not sure that would be great for the health and welfare of the players involved.

Obviously you need to look at each individual players circumstances but I would've thought these guys would've done everything to play...SoO guys seems to be able to back up after origin. Can't see why these guys couldn't unless injured. Messam's on the bench isn't he?

You look at those two matchday squads and have to ask what is the point of the Lions tour.

Neither team is a good representation of who they represent.

why don't the newbies have official Lions numbers ?

pretty sure the others were allocated numbers as soon as the tour party had been selected.

pretty harsh on the likes of davies and russell if they don't get given a number.

fantastic to see courtney lawes back.

Precisely - the Lions didn't fly halfway round the world to 'test' themselves agains the Chiefs WTG; and the supporters sure didn't pay top dollar to see a game between two under strength teams.

And while it's great for the Chiefs fringe players to get 80 minutes in the limelight, for their executives it's hardly how they want their franchise to look to the global media.

The two teams would be better served having an all-day session at the Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel.

Who knows ? The Lions certainly don't need a match so close to the first test . Definitely something they should look at for future tours

The Hurricanes match next Tuesday will be a similar anti-climax. The home side will be fielding a B-strength backline while the visitors will be made up of players who know their tour is winding to a close.
