The first international game I attended was Ireland versus France in what is referred to as International Championship (5 Nations)
in January 1979 at Lansdowne Road. The result was a draw.
January 1973.

Ireland Vs New Zealand, Lansdowne Road.

It also was a draw.

Be a bit of fun if they had these matches occasionally again but no room in the calendar now.
Was at the IRFU Centenary one in LR in 1974.

1980 I think. E v W. Was too pissed and wet to remember any of the game or the vicious Ringer incident, but vaguely remember Beaumont being carried around.
That was in the days when only the president and chairman and their invited special guests got tickets...(and there was only one anthem). The next time I went to hq for a 5/6N match was in 2002.

Seems like a rough deal for the poor old Welsh.

Why don't they make it Scotland/Ireland/Wales v England?

Lancaster Park 1988.
Wales v New Zealand.

I actually don't remember much of the match apart from John Kirwan scoring on the other side of the field and a bloke singing '...and bloody great fishies are Wales' over the Welsh anthem.

Turns out Kirwan scored 4 that day and the All Blacks absolutely slaughtered the Welsh.
In today's money it would be 62-3 or the biggest win between the two countries.

Scottish Districts versus All Blacks 1972 at Hawick.

I was about 12, English and I didn't have a clue, thought I was going to Hay-wick.

Barbarians v Australia at Twickenham in 1996 - Matt Burke was the best player on the pitch - BaaBaas couldn't get anywhere near him. Recall it was David Campese's last match and he scored a try. Also recall a young Stephen Larkham coming off the bench.

Just looked up the BaaBaas team - not bad really!
Barbarians: 15. T Stimpson England, (Joel Stransky 22' South Africa), 14 N Walker Wales, 13 A Bateman Wales, 12 Gregor Townsend Scotland, (M Allen 73'England ), 11 T Underwood England, 10 Rob Andrew (capt) England, 9 R Howley Wales, (A Moore 59' Wales), 8 S Quinnell Wales, (D. Weir 79' Scotland ), 7 Neil Back England, 6 D McIntosh Wales, 5 I Jones New Zealand, 4 C Quinnell Wales, 3 D.Garforth England, 2 N. Hewitt New Zealand, 1 N Popplewell Republic of Ireland

I also couldn't believe how fast Nigel Walker was. Guy had serious wheels.

Wales' first outright 5N win since 1979.

Still feel privileged to have been there. Dad had fudge all money and things weren't going great on the farm.

Think I was between 4-6. Around 1993-5/6 ish.

Went to watch Barbarians at Twickenham with the old man and uncle. I hid behind them when the cameras were looking on me.

Then a week later went to watch Quins at the stoop. :D

Wales v Italy in 94. Was 11 years old. A chant started up and I thought 'this is a bit odd, they are chanted wayoo, wayoo', so I just joined in. I would later learn that everyone was actually changing 'Waaaaules, Waaaaules'.

Actually, scratch that, it couldn't have been that game because I distinctly remember we lost (and to someone who were deemed to be a bit shit). Maybe it was the Canada game in 93. Do any Welahies now of any other famous losses in the early 90's?

AB's v Australia at Athletic Park.

All Blacks won 13 - 12

We were in the Mallard stand and my abiding memories are:

It's a long fucking way up there

It's fucking cold

Someone brought over the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders and one of them had a grass stain on her arse

Mine was Canada v Wales, Invercargill 87RWC. We all got the afternoon off primary school. I remember reading years later that Jeff Wilson was a ball boy.

Should have been Argentina v Fiji in the 1987 RWC, but my parents wouldn't take me. The jerks.

Instead, it was NZ v Ireland in Dunedin in 1992 - a game we almost lost.

One of my older brothers was there. He along with a fair amount of the crowd were rooting for the Irish they were playing so well.

England France, Twickenham, 1981 we lost in a really low scoring shit game. Rose kicked all our points iirc.

However, there were a group of lads behind us in the old South stand that'd managed to get a barrel of beer into the stadium. My dad started drinking with them and I ended up at the age of 11 pretty much dragging him onto the 65 bus from Richmond back to Ealing.

The row the next morning when my mother realised that the car was still parked in Twickenham still reverberates to this day.

Ireland - Wales

Lansdowne Road

Oh dear!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oddly enough the thing I remember from attending matches in LR in the 70s was walking back into town afterwards to catch the bus home from Busaras & being able to buy the paper with the match report by the time you got to the Liffey (a comment on the f*****g level crossing at LR & how long it would delay you).

It was a 9-9 draw between England and Scotland at Twickenham (1987?) that we scored the only try and which should therefore count as a victory. John Jeffrey scored off the back of a lineout I think. My dad and godfather got so pissed they nicked a police megaphone off a mounted policeman that was tied to the saddle. At twickenham station they turned it on and pretended to be British Rail announcers and shepherded a few hundred England fans onto the wrong train so when our train came we got a seat.

I watched the Wallabies play a provincial team when I lived in NZ but my first international was the Wallabies vs Lions at Ballymore. The match with "that pass" from Campo. The massive fight started by the Lions happened right in front of me.
