Paris - South Africa No 8 Duane Vermeulen will leave Toulon at the end of the season, club president Mourad Boudjellal said on Wednesday, with New Zealand's Jerome Kaino a rumoured replacement.

Vermeulen, 31, will return to South African side Stormers, the club he left to join Toulon in 2015.

"Vermeulen is leaving, he will be replaced by an international level player that we will announce in the next 48 hours," said the controversial Boudjellal, who is currently being investigated by European rugby authorities over comments he made at the weekend about Irish and Welsh administrators at European Professional Club Rugby.

"Duane is leaving because he wants to prepare for the World Cup (in Japan in 2019) -- we had offered him a contract that corresponded to the amount of time he works."

Boudjellal suggested that meant the French Top 14 side had offered Vermeulen a pay cut.

"We wouldn't have had him for half the year -- over 24 months he would have been at the club for 11 months.

"We made him a great offer but he wants to go home and his national team coach is relying on him."

Herchel Jantjies in 9. His combination with Willemse comes a long way. Glad to see him in the squad. The other missing link is Josh Vermeulen.

That's a moer of an injury list to deal with already. Season over before it starts.

We start with 6 of the first 8 games away. That's rough. And with some major injuries as well.

Quote:
Cape Town - Stormers coach Robbie Fleck says he is taking Eben Etzebeth's injury "day by day" as he continues preparations for the start of the 2018 Super Rugby season.

Etzebeth has been ruled out for up to four months with a shoulder injury, and that means he will miss more than half of the season.

But, speaking after his side's 77-0 win over SWD Eagles in a pre-season warm-up at Outeniqua Park on Saturday, Fleck was hopeful that Etzebeth was on the right track.

"We are taking it on a week by week basis with Eben, it is the type of injury where once it reacts and the muscles and the nerves start working again it is quite a quick turnaround," Fleck said.

Unfortunately for the Stormers, Etzebeth is not the only injury concern.

"Out of our first eight games six are away from home, so we are touring after one game at home and the likes of Eben [Etzebeth] and Frans [Malherbe] are going to be missing from that tour," said Fleck.

"Jean-Luc and Dan du Plessis will still be out as well, but we are going to get them back, which is the pleasing side.

"The medical staff are working incredibly hard to get them back fit and ready, we need to get them 100% ready before we play them."

Makes for a run of home games at the end when the competition might be tight

Agreed. As long as there is not too much damage done by that point.

I think touring Oz and NZ early is ideal. It gives the team 4 weeks bonding time together at the start of the season

One of things I really like about Fleckie is that he has always acknowledged he needs to learn a lot more around coaching and concentrates on upskilling his coaching knowledge, particularly in the off-season. I wish him success. He operates in a pretty difficult environment.

Sardy, you already have our Robert du P. You cant have everyone that played for you in Super Rugby and still lose a CC final against a sub standard WP team...

I'm a fan of Leyds being used more at 15. Not a fans of our wing stocks right now though. Hope they prove me wrong.

Quote:
Cape Town - Stormers coach Robbie Fleck is confident that he has enough options at wing ahead of this year’s Super Rugby competition.

The Stormers lost the likes of Cheslin Kolbe (Toulouse, France), Bjorn Basson (Oyonnax, France) and Leolin Zas (Sharks), but countered those losses with the signing of wings Raymond Rhule and Sergeal Petersen (both Cheetahs) and JJ Engelbrecht (Toyota Industries Shuttles, Japan).

Fleck told Netwerk24 that the loss of Kolbe is a significant one, but he is happy with what he has at his disposal.

“I’m a big fan of Cheslin. He's irreplaceable as a character, human being and player. But at the same time, Raymond and Sergeal offer us something special. They are guys with good footwork, special talent and pace.”

Fleck added that the Cheetahs duo would “definitely add value and I want them to play with as much freedom and make the same impact as Cheslin.”

Rhule and Petersen’s presence could see Dillyn Leyds utilised more in the fullback position.

The Stormers, who beat the SWD Eagles 77-0 in George earlier this month, have another warm-up match scheduled for this Saturday (February 3) against the Bulls at the Boland Stadium in Wellington (16:00 kick-off).

They start their 2018 Super Rugby campaign at home against the Jaguares on February 17.

DHL Stormers coach Robbie Fleck has confirmed that Wilco Louw’s early departure from the field in Saturday’s Super Rugby warm-up clash with the Vodacom Bulls could be a big problem for his team in the early weeks of the competition.

The Springbok tighthead prop didn’t look in great discomfort when he left the field in the first five minutes of a match that ended in an exciting 26-all draw. However, he wasn’t moving easily when he emerged from the medical room after the game and Fleck said it was probable that he had a hip flexer injury, the extent of which is still to be confirmed pending a trip to a specialist.

Senatla should be starting at wing this year.

I'm concerned about our 12/13. EW was nothing more than solid last year and despite our initial strong start I mentioned this after the first few rounds. Doesn't possess any game breaking ability. And then DDA...who knows what will happen there.

Defensively that's the weakest backline I've ever seen in CT.

This is going to be Willemse year. Ellende sal moet wakker wees langs hom.

Yes, Peterson/Rhule as defensive juggernauts on the wing. Turnstyle DDA at 12 - doesn't inspire a lot of confidence right now.
