Wha-hey! ... a pick and go try. Would like to see us do more than that, though. :? After Farries' half break, I wondered why there were so many people in the ruck and then remembered, right, they'll go into endless pick and goes now.

Will be poached by 7s soon enough? :( (Keep her free for 6N, I say.)

I guess the "contracts" will mean not yet, probably not before the commonwealth games. It may depend on her life choices. She's only 19 (20?) and might be busy with studies to travel the world. The 7's team is also quite settled right this second and the England women now get paid for matches as of this series. On would like to see the 7's and XV's program separated. As the women's game develops it won't be so easy to be the bets in both.

GREAT Try by Abby Dow smashing through 3 tackles. While Breech is getting plaudits I've rated Dow for a while.

Great run and fend and spin. Soft tackle attempts.

... ha, ha ... 'tremendous u18 and u20 program' ... the other assistant is the head coach (think he may have been her assistant). Horrible results against England over the last few years!

It's flawed logic for a late-development sport like rugby to be giving 17 year olds 'free passes' to play for the next representative team up as they age. How many U18 internationals in other nations, even U20s for that matter, make the grade? (Even NZ and England men don't have the best conversion rate despite some blip years.)

Since when is 'advantage over' for a high tackle penalty when the FH takes a speculative cross kick???

I thought that was strange.

Anyways, England look clinical here. If Canada could kick it wouldn't be like this but England are converting virtually every attack and the game is almost all in Canada's half.

Good try by Canada. Great offloading and a great break by the 6 for 8 to score. All from 14 keeping McLean's kick in.

Ellie Killdunne finishes the game off.

Well I for a while suspected that this new generation of England ladies were something special, I think while there are more they need to prove they have made an impressive start and look to be a really special generation in the making.

Rating the youngsters:

Jessica Breech: Sublime. The 3rd test also shows she is effective in defence as well as attack, plus showed she can attack when surrounded by opponents.

Abby Dow: Much like Breech, England's right wing has always gets fewer attacking opportunities but perhaps showed more so then Breech that she can finish in tough circumstances and also has a good kick and quick thinking.

Lagi Tuima: Didn't get much opportunity to show her gifts but showed some real skill in her passes attacking play. Showed she will be a great player soon and Burford's natural successor.

Ellie Kildunne: England's first player to show that the future at 15 after Waterman is gone is safe. Great pace, a real good change of direction that ruins broken field play or breaks open the field.

Leanne Riley : Was brillliant today. Surely England's first choice 9.

Caity Mattinson: Added zip in all the replacement games she entered. Ddn't get much to show off but did well

Zoe Harrison: Obviously thought of as Daley-McLean's next possible successor. SHowed her talent but like Mattinson didn't get much opportunity but looked good in what she did.

Lark Davis: Interesting England's scrum looked more solid with replacements, not sure if that was the England replacements, Canada tiring or a bit of both. Would like to see more of her but Cokayne has made the 2 shirt her own in the past year.

Poppy Cleall : I know she already broke into the squad lat season, but this series shows she is a certain starter now, especially from the last game. A real battering ram who punches holes and offloads and passes well. Coming into ehr own at 25.

Catherine O’Donnell: Didn't get much time but showed her physicality, a classic potentially baby eater lock.

Hannah Botterman: Didn't see much but looks a useful tighthead who is hard to shift in the scrum

I hope in tests next summer we look at a new 10 and 12 to see perhaps blooding replacements for post McLean and Burfield.

Just caught up with the first half.

England are brilliant to watch. Abbie Dow and Jessica Breach (she's stupid fast) are excellent finds as are most of the newbies actually.

The lock Poppy Cleille?, was very good also.

From Canada's perspective I thought the Canadian Lock.. no 5 was their best player by a mile. England playing far too quickly for them though.

If you watched the 2nd half you'll see Breech offers more then just finishing with speed. Cleall was good and the new generation seems to be making a genuinely seemless entry to test rugby. Though France an the 6 Nations will be a bigger test then Canada's B team.

So just caught the 2nd half after France vs Japan.

They were very good. I would happily watch Breach, Kildunne and Dow all the time.

Lagi Tuima was good also but Poppy Cleall was fantastic all game. Very hard call between the 2 wingers and her, perhaps Breach because she looks brilliant.

Half tempted to alter the front page of the english thread and put in the womens side as well as the mens as well as fixture list and rankings etc.

I forgot to mention:

Jo Brown: had a great first game at 6. Quick and up for lots of work.

Shaunagh Brown: added a ton of power running and physicality to England.

Overall the future is really bright for England. I already feel that the overall squad is better then in the world cup a few months ago and there are even more outstanding players in the premiership who I think should be looked at.

Canada's 5, 6 and 8 along with 12 and 14 were very good. Their 11 has pace (not as much as Breech), their 9 wasn't bad and their scrum is world class, can't think of another team who can keep crumpling England's one like that. Canada are almost like Wales in the men's game, lots of physicality but a lack of efficiency with the ball in attack. I'm sure they will be a better force with their whole squad, but as a mostly developmental side they can take home a few positives, they have found some good new players who stood up to one of the top 2 teams in the world. If they can get a good kicker to develop an exit plan from their own 22, improve their lineout and get a 10 who can boss the game and not be hidden in defense then they could be a big danger once again.

Canada have shown they are easily part of the top 5 teams in the world (England, NZ, France, Canada and the USA) where there is a gap to the next lot with Wales, Australia (whose union is a disgrace not playing them between world cup years) and sadly Ireland who were part of the top pack until recently. However Ireland don't appear to be interested in the women's game at a time when teams are really starting to invest in the game and push it forwards. Even the WRU are really pushing the women's game these days.

It should be noted that the last few England U20's sides have been stacked with talent since 2015. A lot are already breaking into the England team right now and are the better players for their clubs. the likes of Lagi Tuima, Abigail Dow, Zoe Harrison, Ellie Kildunne, Jess Breach, Lotte Clapp, Sarah Bern and Catherine O'Donnell look the real deal. And other understudies like LeAnn Riley and Poppy Cleall have kicked on. And I think England are choosing all their very best players from the premier league.

I feel my posts hyping some young English players seem justified now :)

A good mate - who coaches at one of the top universities - and I were chatting about this last night. We worried that this might be 'the' group heading into the next WRWC cycle. Now they still have to settle on a permanent coach and there's a very good one who's been an assistant but we're not sure if he'll put his hat in the ring. So maybe that person will have a different policy, picking players on form from clubs, not just from universities and those who've moved to Southern BC / Van Isle.

Looking at the World Cup squad, there were a lot just about or over 30, and a friend who's friends with a lot of them thinks they'll retire now (and confirmed that a few have made it official) given the time commitment needed and their ages in four years' time.

We'll still be in the hunt, and they will develop / find players to keep us in the chase, but I think this past generation was the best we'll have for a while.

It's possible the 2014 World Cup will be seen as Canada's peak achievement for a little while. Which weirdly still means they

An irony about that 2014 RWC, is I think that was England's weakest team over these past 3 world cups and they were ironically the ones to get over the line. England should have won it in 2010, they were dominate but cocked it up. In 2017 they clearly had a better team then 2014 but never quite got into their best gear all world cup and seemed weirdly lost and slow in the 2nd half against New Zealand (Whom I still think England were stupid in showing their cards 2 months before and seemed puzzled New Zealand learned to deal with their kicks and not contest their line outs).

I wonder if the "professionalism" in 2017 actually hampered an group of amateurs who weren't ready to just jump straight into doing nothing but gym, training and weights all day every day to the exclusion of everything else for a year. Also I find more and more fitness plans need individualism to them, beasting some players actually has the reverse effects. I think far to many Rugby teams go nuts on focusing on fitness prior to world cups and wonder why the players seem strangely without energy or unfocused at some point in the knockout stages. The professionalism also put a target on their backs.

The 2014 team was one in transition who were probably the 3rd best team in the 6 nations but had huge the good fortune with Ireland catching New Zealand unawares and Canada peaking against France and a Harvey having the world cup of her life before England were ruthless to them both. The fact they were smashed n the 6 Nations regularly for the first time in their history and would then lose to Wales for only the 2nd time in history shows in was a weaker England team.

Going forward England should really look at dominating the 6 nations for the next few years. They now have depth that they have never had and can support separate XV and 7's sides as well.

I overlooked stuff about England's women's U20 Squad:

https://www.bristolrugby.co.uk/news/sev ... or-201718/

Lucy Attwood (Bristol Ladies, Bristol University)
Leah Bartlett (Loughborough Lightning, Loughborough College)
Sarah Beckett (Firwood Waterloo Ladies)*
Hannah Botterman (Saracens Women) *
Brooke Bradley (Bristol Ladies, Exmouth Community College)
Tazmin Bricknell (Gloucester-Hartpury Women’s RFC, Hartpury College)
Abigail Burton (Gloucester-Hartpury Women’s RFC, Hartpury College)*
Brooke Clarke (Worcester Valkyries)
Tabitha Copson (Gloucester-Hartpury Women’s RFC, Hartpury College)*
Hollie Cunningham (Bristol, Exeter University)
Rosie Galligan (Saracens, Loughborough University)
Ellie Gilbert (Gloucester-Hartpury Women’s RFC, Hartpury College)
Akina Gondwe (Worcester Valkyries, Worcester University) *
Amelia Harper (Loughborough Lightning, Loughborough College)*
Victoria Laflin (Worcester Valkyries, Worcester University) *
Amelia Lavallee (Gloucester-Hartpury, Hartpury College) *
Rianna Manson (Darlington Mowden Park Sharks, York St. John University) *
Ellie Mulhearn (Bristol Ladies)
Phoebe Murray (Bristol Ladies) *
Ellena Perry (Saracens Women, Coventry University)
Connie Powell (Gloucester-Hartpury Women’s RFC, Hartpury College)*
Michaella Roberts (Bristol Ladies)
Helena Rowland (Saracens Women)*
Lilian Stoeger-Goddard (Bristol Ladies, Plymouth Marjons University)*
Emma Uren (Saracens Women, St Mary’s University)
Rowan White (Saracens Women)
Charlie Wilcock (Worcester Valkyries)
Ella Wyrwas (Saracens Women)
Now the U20 system is churning out a ton of excellent players these past few years with loads breaking into the senior women's team and impressing it will be interesting who excels here. Brook Bradley and Lucy Attwood have both been good for Bristol and the seniors did take a look at them in the wider training squad. Ellena Perry is a very good prop already as well and Hannah Botterman already proped for England against Canada.

EXCLUSIVE: Details of England women's lucrative new deal revealed
New Zealand and England contest the Women’s Rugby World Cup final
Sharing
20 November, 2:16pm

England’s women’s players will take their match fee earnings to nearly £2,000 in just five days when they face Canada in the second of their three match series at the Twickenham Stoop in London tomorrow night under a new deal thrashed out with the Rugby Football Union.

It is understood the deal agreed by the RFU, the Rugby Players Association and the women’s players’ representatives gives the match squad £900 per international and £1400 for signing the Elite Player Squad agreement which involves 35 players and there are scheduled to be eight matches this season. England defeated Canada 79-5 in the first test and will complete the series at Twickenham on Saturday.

The deal follows the ending of one year full-time contracts that were handed out to England players leading into this year’s Women’s World Cup which saw England beaten by New Zealand in the final. The RFU, the richest Union in the sport, is pumping millions of pounds into a new club league and plans to expand the women’s game but insists the 15-a side players, at present, do warrant full-time contracts and are concentrating on Sevens in the build up to that World Cup.

The new deal still leaves the England women a considerable way behind Dylan Hartley and the England men who pocket £22,000 a match. Samoa, who will play in front of 80,000 fans against England at Twickenham on Saturday can only look enviously at both the English men’s and women’s squads as their Pacific Islands Union is bankrupt. The Samoa players are due to receive £650 a match and the RFU has made a £75,000 goodwill donation to try and help their Union.

Damian Hopley, CEO of the Rugby Players Association, believes this is a significant moment for the women’s game in England and said:” This is a one year groundbreaking deal that is taking us in the right direction. Of course we wish there was more money but you have to look at the broader picture and the money that is being put into the women’s game. We will start the process earlier so there is a longer run-up to the next deal. This has been, for everyone, a complicated process and we have be going into unchartered territory and some curve balls have been thrown up.

“A lot of the players are still working full time and so it is a very different model for us to deal with. Those players have to take time off work, get cover and so this isn’t a case of putting money in your back pocket. Some of the women players have to pay for cover or supply teachers.

“It is very different from the deal agreed for the men. The player representatives did a brilliant job for the squad and it not a straight forward situation with some players who are students, others in full-time employment, therefore there is a discrepancy in terms of the model because not everyone is in the same employment situation. It is a start and that is the important thing.”

This is a bold move by Quins:
Harlequins have announced their ambition to make history by hosting the biggest-ever crowd at a women’s club match, when their historic rivalry against local adversaries Richmond FC is reignited on Saturday 10th March 2018.

Harlequins Ladies, current leaders of the Tyrrells Premier 15s, are bidding to welcome a world record crowd for a women’s club match and the biggest crowd for a women’s match outside of a Women’s Rugby World Cup Final, at The Stoop.

Though I suspect your knowledge of the women's game was better back then. It was near impossble for me to follow it back then. I believe you're right. I'm not surprised. Every women's game I've ever been to always has tons of other players come to watch. Women's rugby is a everyone knows everyone else situation in England and they all support each other, e.g. the whole of Richmond Ladies, the first XV, reserves, U18s, U16s and the rest all turned up for the England-Canada 2nd test at the stoop for example last week. After Harlequins vs Bristol at the stoop a month ago all the Quins reserves and academy players raced off to watch Saracens which was on an hour later. As far as I can tell every women who ever held a rugby ball in a rugby jersey was in Belfast for the RWC final so it's likely there were all there if they could afford to go.

I came to post about that funny enough. It's an ambitious but excellent goal. I believe it can be done, though it being scheduled in the 6 Nations is probably the worst time for an attempt at a record domestic women's Rugby game (though England are in France that day). I'll almost certainly be there though  I hope they advertise the crap out of it. I remember when Quins first did the big game concept, they pushed the crap out of it. Every school had leaflets, it was on the cover of the evening standard newspaper. I hope this gets a big push for it.

It's the same here, as well. National players can be a bit cliquey in a club, but they do get a lot of support from club mates, school girls, etc. Contingents of club people I know from two provinces spent their annual vacation on the WRWC.

I suppose you, like me, stumbled upon his account when searching for full games from the recent series? :(

I as actually looking for last years just before the series. But like you I've spent a ton of time looking for the full games, particularly the 2nd test which I was in the stadium for so wanted to re-watch it. I wouldn't mind but some of the best highlghts are not in the highlights :(

On another positive for the women's game here Richmond Ladies v Wasps will be on TV on Sunday, the first of the domestic league to be on TV. So Sunday I'll be lounging with Richmond Ladies v Wasps at mid-day and then the RFU are streaming the main event, Quins Ladies v Saracens for the top of the table.

As well as November marking the anniversary of Canada's first ever women's XV match, Kelly Russell announced her retirement. Massive loss for them.

In the team of the tournament for 2010 and 2014 world cups and ends her career playing the first ever women's Barbarians game which is a lovely footnote to end her career on.

I feel my posts hyping some young English players seem justified now :)

um,,, 5, daylight, 9, a million light years, the rest

presume these are more Kiwi poaches ?
