Doesn't look to have a great deal of pace in it - might speed up as the test goes on, if the sun stays out.

Like wise with the outfield - slow at the moment but will probably dry out.

Rubbish from Australia, they look completely disinterested. Starc and Lyon bowling pies.

I thought that there is a little bit in the pitch for the pace bowlers early, but the Aust quicks didn't bowl the right length - too much short stuff (one peach from Starc aside). Cook looking settled and on the way to another ton. It probably helps the batsmen that they are playing two long sessions either side of the tea break.

That was a poor ball from Cummins - short and wide - which deserved to be cut to the boundary. Instead Vince plays the wrong height and top edges to Paine.

Vince will be mildly annoyed with himself there.

Root comes out and demonstrates how to play the shot correctly. 4.

Cook is gone and England are in a bit of trouble. Root will need more than just another 50 here.

Heazlewood finally puts it in the right area, and gets it to come back a little and straighten up.

Anderson and Broad will probably bend it round corners in the humidity tomorrow.

 Noted. Its evenly poised or even a slight ascendency to Australia so should England get into a position of strength, you have earned the right to a couple of suitably modest comments on the state of the game/aspects of play.

And don't forget the relative merits of the pitches at Eden Park and Sophia Gardens.

Went on for a good 10 minutes.

No Victorians in the side when they've bossed the Shield.

Lynn is mediocre and hasn't played much 50-over cricket.

Inconsistent selection policy, Steve Smith's a carnt ... dot dot dot. Nuthin' unusual. :P

They will find it very difficult getting 20 Aussie wickets. Still the best bet is 2/1 the draw and 2/1 and England win. Take them both and that's evens.

I raised it in the last test about Smith's catching and Ovalball said he is a very good slip fielder. Yeah for England he is.

He shouldn't be fielding there with a dodgy back. It's bad enough as a captain dropping catches.

Hazelwood gets the new ball to move away from that bat a bit, and Bairstow is good enough to get an edge on it.

Stumps.

I still think this advantage England. If they can put on another hundred or so, the swing bowlers should knock over Australia for about 250. 300 in the second dig, declared, and a 400 lead will probably be more than sufficient to win the game on day 4, and allow for any rain delays.

Poor from England - pitch flat as a pancake and we'll be lucky to make 300 now and we'll give the best of the pitch to the Aussie bats.. Needed 450 minimum. Same old story, bats getting a start but not going on to a significant innings - losing wickets at crucial times.

No point winning the toss if we still end up batting last :x

Root must be kicking himself with that dismissal, same with Vince -England had a chance to post 450 plus

He was, earlier in the series, but he's shelled a few now. Possible lack of concentration. I've never been a fan of skippers fielding in the slips - but it's common practice these days.

FFS.

There was lateral movement early, which the Australian bowlers failed to use properly. They did a bit better with the new ball late in the day.

Lyon was spinning it 15 degrees on day 1.

Anderson and Broad should be able to bend the new ball at will, on a deck with a little grass, and humid, hot, overcast conditions.

It's an excellent test pitch, and way better than the surfaces you lot served up last Ashes.

Time will tell, but I suspect it will really suit the England attack.

What is it that makes a top class batsman, well set in the 70s, hit a leg stump half-volley in the air? It had 4 written all over it, I assumed he'd mucked up by picking out the fielder, not that he'd got himself out!

The latest bit of self-mutilation actually managed to silence Swann, which is some achievement.
