Describe how you would delineate the older version of Rugby Union vs what you consider "modern Rugby" whenever you hear that expression, when the change occurred (around what year) and what in nature you think modern Rugby is (particular law changes, styles, advent of new physiological types to the game, change in mentality, development in coaching strategy, emphasis on specific phases of the game, discarding of old principles...).

Old rugby union = Rugby Union
Modern Rugby Union = Rugby League.

Pretty much!

Now: 'trust our processes', 'get rucks in the right place', 'stick to our systems'

Then: Chuck the ball around and have a go. Kick the leather off it (but for touch or over defence, not for an easy counter-attack). Get into some insane, random, not-as-skilled-as-I-think attacking play that was full of linebreaks because the defence was shite.

Somewhere early 2000s it switched. Maybe with the raise of England getting good.

As a Reds supporter, I can assure you this is still the case.

For all the talk about 'aerial ping-pong' in the last little while, of the games from the 80s that I've watched, there seemed to be a lot more kicking and the ball was seemingly in play for a lot less time as well.

I can't stand watching games from before the 90s.
They're so messy.

Yep. The time taken between most tackles and the ball in the half (dummy half in League-usually the hooker) hands, is about the same in both codes. Then it’s one or two passes- hit up-repeat until an opportunity appears.
League defensive systems have also been adopted. And their tackling techniques.
Amateur Rugby meant the ball was properly contested in every tackle, which meant that the backs had to be creative, because turnovers were very common. It was a very different game.

I’m a fan of the old game. I grew up watching (and loving) League. I’ve already got my fix of crunching tackles and risk free ball play.

.

Modern rugby = five points for a try, played by pros, crouch/bind/set scrums, two-handed line-out throws, eight subs including three front-row players, and ref mics.

Everything else is old rugby.

The breakdown.

And the fact individual talent alone can no longer win you games, and coaching has become vital. You could have a stinky coaching staff but win most games with top talent before, you no longer can.
