This is a hell of a story, so please bear with me.

It's about my old shipmate, Chalky. A genuine good bugger, real salt of the earth type. I am proud to have him as my friend.

Kevin "Chalky" Carr is an ex Royal Marine and ex Royal New Zealand Navy officer. Following the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, he was one of the first people on the scene at the collapsed CTV building, and he spent hours crawling through the wreckage finding and assisting survivors. He was honoured with the NZ Bravery Decoration for what he did that day, crawling through unsecured rubble during the aftershocks. He saved many lives.

Now, once again, his life is in danger, yet again he thinks of others.

Chalky has pancreatic cancer, and his prognosis is pretty shit. No sugar coating it, he's terminal. But he's going out fighting. Only he's not fighting for himself.

Cancer creates strange connections, and in his treatment, Chalky heard about Isla Lunn, who at age 7 lost her mother to breast cancer. Isla's mum was a solo parent, little Isla is now being raised by her grandparents. Chalky found a mission in little Isla, and his mission is simple. Before Chalky is finished, he wants to create the nest egg for little Isla that her mother never got to do. Chalky's family is well provided for, well supported, they have their nest egg.

Chalky wants to raise $100,000 for Isla, he's just cracked $70,000. Through Chalky's last position as the All Blacks Logistics Manager, he's made some high profile friends, including many of the current All Black team. The rugby community has really swung in behind this.

So, in a huge shout out to the Planet Rugby community, can we swing in behind this and see if we can get Chalky over the line?

A link to Chalky's Givealittle page is below.

Also, Sam Whitelock's new look, not a fan!!

Yeah, it's a prick of a story, but what a way to change the narrative. There was a $500.00 donation a couple of days ago from the Wallabies!!

Sam Cane is also on board, and here's his Givealittle page to support.

All donations will go in to a draw to win a signed All Blacks Jersey, plus if he reached his $10,000 goal, Sam will also throw in the All Black Test Jersey he wore in the game against Wales this year.

I've just chucked $40.00 in to the pool, he's already raised over $2500, so if you still want to help, plus go into the draw for some priceless All Blacks memorabilia (A PLAYING JERSEY!!), jump on board!

2nd link is Sam Cane's page, chucks you in the draw for an AB's signed jersey, plus if he tops out over $10,000 dollars on his page, Sam will throw in his playing jersey for the Wales game as well!

I thought about donating just to see Sam get his beard and flowing locks back but decided that Chalky spun such a great yarn that what the hell, may as well chip in with a bit of loose change.

Always nice to see the players, and the supporters rally behind such a good cause. Well done all.

It has to be noted that even without hair and beard, Sam Whitelock still does a pretty damn good cavenman impression.

And this is why, you plums, I ride my ABs chopper over 100kms each year for cancer. The ABs, despite their shortcomings are inspirational figures. I've raised over 15 large so good plums like this can get through to Christmas, see the birth of their kid, celebrate their last birthday with family, go somewhere special or fight the good fight and live to tell another tale.

Update, Chalky has just cracked $80,000 and is only another $17,000 short of his goal, including the supporting donation page set up by Sam Cane. He's really going to do this. I hope we can get this done before Christmas. Big thanks to all those who have donated. Feel free to spread the word far and wide. Don't hope for a Christmas miracle, help to make one happen!

HE DID IT!!!

Raised $100,000 and then some. So, in typical service fashion, he's gone looking for his next mission. Chalky is now raising funds to buy 15 new Chemotherapy Chairs for Christchurch Hospital, so cancer patients can sit in comfort while receiving the life saving poison.

He won't die wondering what he could have done, that's for damn sure!

He's even got Richie McCaw's wife on board as s trustee! Gotta love the guy! GO CHALKY!

A picture is worth a thousand words, or, in this case, a hundred thousand dollars. Here's little Isla with her 'nest egg'!

Chalky has decided that this isn't enough, he's kicked in to another mission raising ANOTHER $100,000 to purchase specialist fit for purpose chairs for patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Gotta love the guy!

Anyhow, let's hear it for Chalky's Chairs! In case any of ya are wondering, here's the funding link!

I found out this morning that Chalky has passed. He leaves behind a wife, Sarah, and two sons, Josh and Jamie.

He made his $100,000 goal.

Rest easy warrior, I'll see you in Valhalla!

It was my first day back at work today after a pretty shit couple of weeks off. My mother in law passed from post operative complications and dementia after surgery for breast cancer, and on the day i get back to work, Chalky passes.

I got home today and felt like absolute crap. All I wanted to do was fall on the couch and sleep, but as I sat on the bed to get out of my work clothes, I just got on my workout gear instead, went downstairs and gave the body a good seeing to in the gym.

Chalky would have loved to have been able to fight his cancer the way I can, so no more excuses, no more talking myself out of workouts. Got to fight this.

My mate Chalky didn't go wondering, neither will I.

Cheers shipmate, rest well.
