I never read too much into preseason results but it's still annoying the Chiefs team wasn't named.

Sharks S Rugby Favourites! :smug:

Quote:
Cape Town - The Sharks showed promise on Saturday ahead of their Super Rugby season opener, easily overcoming France's Racing 92 31-14 in their Natixis Cup clash in Hong Kong.

The first South African Super Rugby side to play in the city, the Sharks scored five tries against Racing's two as they prepare to take on the Lions on February 17.

Racing, in the middle of their French Top 14 season, were without All Blacks legend Dan Carter who sat out with a calf strain, as well as captain Dimitri Szarzewski, selected 83 times for France, who was also injured.

The Sharks got off to a strong start with wing Makazola Mapimpi crashing over eight and a half minutes in.

Centre Marius Louw bumped up the score after an off-load by Stephan Lewies, before Robert du Preez converted to give the side a 12-0 lead by the end of the first half.

The South Africans continued to dominate as the second half got underway, with Louw touching down again after just four minutes.

Racing looked like they could make a comeback as So'otala Fa'aso'o landed their first try of the match before the Sharks' Cameron Wright took the scores to 24-7.

Racing managed a second try from Xavier Chauveau but in the end it was the Sharks who triumphed, with fullback Lwazi Mvovo making a dash for the line and setting up a final try by Curwin Bosch.

I watched most of the Sharks game. A backline of Mvovo, Mapimpi, Nkosi and Am is going to be a sight behold.

Keegan Daniel showed some great form too. As did Cameron Wright.

The usual rustiness, but they looked sharp and fit.

nKOSI BEING PROTECTED ON THE BENCH...?

Sharks have never been good at their transformation stuff. Nkosi should be starting ahead of Kwaaitjies Kobus this year.

The Sharks were the first South African SR team to have a black captain. They've also been way ahead of the pack when it comes to transformation - last year I remember they fielded at team that was more than 50% black all on merit.

A backline with Mapinmp, Nkosi and Am is going to cause all sorts of trouble.

Not so sure that is correct - Luke Watson captained Stormers in 2007 ;)

Jaguares squad for next saturday's preseason match against the Bulls and the first two SR games against Stormers and Lions:

Front rowers
Felipe Arregui, Agustín Creevy, Javier Díaz, Nicolás Leiva, Julián Montoya, Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro & Juan Pablo Zeiss

Locks
Matías Alemanno, Tomás Lavanini & Guido Petti

Backrowers
Marcos Kremer, Juan Manuel Leguizamón, Tomás Lezana, Pablo Matera, Javier Ortega Desio, & Leonardo Senatore

SHs
Gonzalo Bertranou & Martín Landajo

FHs
Joaquín Díaz Bonilla, Juan Martín Hernández & Nicolás Sánchez

Centres

Baustista Ezcurra, Santiago González Iglesias & Matías Orlando

Wingers / FBs
Emiliano Boffelli, Sebastián Cancelliere, Bautista Delguy, Ramiro Moyano & Joaquín Tuculet

Bolded are the debutant players: Cancelliere has already played with Los Pumas last november and did quite well. Delguy is a very promising young attacking FB, the three props are coach Ledesma's bet to try and revert the abysmal condition of our scrum as of late. None of them have been into "the system" over these last years...

Matera has been appointed as team captain, and Tuculet and Lezana are the vicecaptains.

First trainings and a couple of preseason matches have showed that Ledesma seemingly prefers Bertranou ahead of Landajo. :D

Also, the new jersey has been presented:

From Suparugby on Facebook:
Quote:
Warren Whiteley and his Emirates Lions Super troopers reached new frontiers at Secunda’s Sasol Rugby club when they beat their understudies 59-12 in a mini trial match.

Secunda rolled out the red carpet for the Lions Rugby Company and Whiteley and his men didn’t dissappoint, running in nine tries after a slow start at this beautiful setting.

With the smoke and the flames of the Sasol plant in the background, the Super Rugby SupaRugby soon found their rythm and there was no stopping them.

Whiteley played most of the 80 minutes, scored two tries and put his body on the line for his men while the flyer Slakkie Mahuza scores a hat trick with his exceptional pace and staked a claim for a starting berth in the team to face the Sharks.

Apart from Mahuza’s hat trick and Whiteleys duo, center Harold Vorster also scored a brace with Aphiwe Dyantyi and Marnus Schoeman also dotting down.

Springbok pivot Elton Jantjies cool and calmly converted seven of the nine tries, some of them tricky shots from the side line.

Flyhalf Ashlon Davids opened the days’ scoring when he chased down a kick from Madosh Tambwe and scored a second late in the game after a beautiful pass by Krappies van der Berg.

Big Trokkie Janse van Rensburg had a run in rhe right wing with Ruan Combrinck always close by to give him advice in this unfamiliar position.

The other newcomer that challenged for a place in the Starting XV was the blonde Marnus Schoeman, who often turned over posession and was a menace at the breakdown.

It was a great hit out for the Super troopers and it was a fitting end to thank the hosts for the red carpet treatment

And a fun time was had by all
XOXO
:)

On paper a pretty good squad. Hopefully Mitchell can get them to play good rugby and move them away from brainless rugby. Watching Tukkies play on Monday was like watching Bulls rugby of old.

Jaguares' team for tomorrow's match @ Bulls:

1 Arregui Felipe, 2 Creevy Agustín, 3 Tetaz Chaparro Nahuel
4 Alemanno Matías, 5 Lavanini Tomás
6 Matera Pablo (c), 7 Ortega Desio Javier, 8 Lezana Tomás
9 Bertranou Gonzalo, 10 Sánchez Nicolás
11 Moyano Ramiro, 12 Ezcurra Bautista, 13 Boffelli Emiliano, 14 Delguy Bautista
15 Tuculet Joaquín

Reserves
16 Montoya Julián, 17 Leiva Nicolás, 18 Diaz Javier, 19 Zeiss Juan Pablo, 20 Petti Guido, 21 Kremer Marcos, 22 Leguizamón Juan Manuel, 23 Senatore Leonardo, 24 Landajo Martín, 25 Hernández Juan Martín, 26 Diaz Bonilla Joaquín, 27 González Iglesias Santiago, 28 Orlando Matías, 29 Cancelliere Sebastian

Love Bertranou and Delguy starting, although I'm a bit surprised at Bofelli's spot at 13... he's allways been a FB/winger.

LHPs are a completely unknown quantity to me.

Ledesma seems to have an entirely different staff to Hourcade's at Los Pumas. He's spoken about builidng up Jaguares at a team on its own and not just a Pumas' appendix.

Which is what one wants if you want the Jaguares to perform

Not true. There have been a number of articles posted about the lack of transformation there. WP easily ahead in this department.

I agree but such a pity Serfontein left. He could have really thrived under Mitchell's coaching. Really hope Gelant carries on his good form. No more average Coetzee for the Boks please.

Yeah but Brookvale on a Thursday night?? It would get more people if it was played in the Domain. They aint gonna make any coin with these games, why not play at a central city oval?

Korobiete injured?

Quote:
Genia hasn't yet played for the Rebels, pulling out of the Brisbane Tens with the back concern that is still lingering, putting him under a cloud for round one.

He is one of four big-name Rebels injured for the final trial week, with wing Marika Koroibete and flank Richard Hardwick missing with knee injuries and centre Billy Meakes still recovering from foot surgery, that is set to rule him out of the early parts of the 2018 Super Rugby season.
