I agree with much of what you say but think Noves merits some credit. I have always put in the caveat that Toulouse's success is hard to truly gauge because of the length of time they were effectively the best resourced club: when upstarts came (and went) with competing budgets (Stade, BO, RCT, ASM), they provided a challenge.

That said
- we've criticised Noves for failing to make any use of what he had available as Fre coach and that highlights that just having resource does not guarantee success: as witnessed by early Saracens or the Canes for years or current RCT. So, at the least, Noves did well (very well) with the hand he had at ST for a long time.
- we need to credit him for the rugby ST played for all those years (peaking in '04) contrary to what was (and still is) the typical T14 style. A beacon of entertainment in a world of tedium.
- he also recognised the value of competing to try and win in Europe. He won: against the best Europe had to offer. Repeatedly.
- he had a loyalty to his players. Probably too much so. Honourable in an age of merc mentality.

If he had retired in 07, he'd have done so as a legend. Instead he soiled his own copybook as he became a failed dictator.

Who knows I might be too hard on Noves, I don't claim I'm categorically right about him over his entire career. But I do believe what I mention is at least a solid bulk of the matter. Back in the day a broad idea of how to play a match was what constituted a "game-plan". Game plans were minimal, especially so in France as you'd agree, where in lots of matches, say France back in '07, you'd have struggled to find one at all if you tried. If you watch the play during the 80min unfold, it must've been basically: "okay guys: run, use those widths, play from hand as much as you can, and have fun out there goddammit", with a few defensive drills thrown in.
A comprehensive analysis from a top French mind at the time meant identifying broad strengths and weaknesses, very basic one-liner commands like "be pragmatic and kick in the penalties; keep your discipline, no penalties; exploit the counters..." and then just hoping french flair kicked in and won the game.

But nothing like what we're seeing today at the highest level. A Vern Cotter TRANSFORMED a shit-poor Scotland with modifications right down to the smallest detail, Schmidt picked up a crap Ireland team and made them into world beaters with extreme scrutiny and a scientist's eye, exploiting every final little inch of potential in that collective and maximizing in a way that just isn't known in France. I sincerely cannot give the credit you're asking if I think of Noves who was just drowning in excess talent for decades if I use the same rationale, I know I'm reiterating but, do you know what I mean ?

P.S.: And what you're saying at the end is very true: Noves would've gone down as a legend had he stopped a decade ago, but that says a lot about the limits of one's current era: the first band in a musical movement are never the best in that genre, the first in a field of cinema is usually never the best in that field - it takes the following generations to refine that craft based on what the pioneers laid out for them. But in the case of Cotter or Eddie Jones, contemporaries of Noves', of course it's less question of generational distortion, it's more a question of Oceanian minds >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> French minds.

Fr have a good 9 in Dupont so the chances are that he will be dropped for some guy that is shiiter than my granny, they have an excellent young 10, but they will drop him and play some journeyman. Both the wings showed promise and Thomas especially looks to have a good chance to make it but they too will be dropped. My point is that whoever the Fr coach he cant resist trying to show how clever he is by making totally stupid selections.

The sooner France need to move away from having a meerkat at 9 the better. Running in to a brick wall without any semblance of a plan to suck in defenders is stone age stuff.

Two of the main reasons why Noves declined at Toulouse was his jobs for the boys coaching appointments. J-B Ellisade, Servat and Pelous had just finished playing and they are there next season calling the shots on the sideline. Then they have to help Noves in pushing out their mates when they aren't playing well.

The other is recruitment and selection too many out of condition players were signed and others under performed (the way Toulouse played didn't help with that). Doussain at 9 was just ridiculous.

All true. I'd pick Dupont and Belleau and give them a long run (Lopez going to be out for a while yet even if anyone thinks he offers more).

Wings: Huget and Vakatawa  Neither would have made any other team in the top 10.

It was a peak in rugby terms. Yes, he had success after but the high pace, offloading rugby went into terminal decline thereafter. It was subsequently picked up by ASM and latterly LaR. ST declined to the point of 8 man rugby 2 seasons ago.

ST were going down whilst others were adapting to the modern game. The rot was never going to happen overnight.

Fre rugby has suffered from this forever because of the mentality that the game is run from 9 and not 10. So a guy who is meant to be driving the bus is the one who spends most of his time looking down. It's a metaphor for all things French in a global context Image

Yes, the later years were a bit boring indeed and not as attractive to watch. Poor recruitment which in the end was also his responsibility.

That new coaching set-up looks like a downgrade from the previous one. Laporte controls everything now. The cnut.

1) Well, I guess when there was competition for recruitment, Noves became less successful in being able to attract the right players. + the amount of Toulouse developed youth that was wasted and yet made decent careers elsewhere. We also saw a decline in attitude/discipline; witness Huget, Tolofua, Galan, Mermoz etc. Some of that was down to the money flowing into rugby which has seen such problems everywhere. However, Noves's loyalty to his players was also a weakness because it allowed the lazy ones too much leeway. I throw Medard into that too but his problems were of a different kind.

2) Politically, it's game over. Barring Laporte going to jail (not happening now he has got Fra the RWC), he has the hegemony he sought. Total power. The only out I could see is if the clubs/LNR broke with the FFR entirely.

And Brunel + Elissalde........... may as well have given the job to Mr Hulot.

No but you don't understand. France are retarded. They're mentally retarded. I'm not being cute, funny etc. France ARE retarded. Vern Cotter would be free for sure by 2019, he's one of the Top 3 in the world, speaks French fluently and coached there for a decade, and he's there right now, objectively the perfect candidate - and not only has France let him slip right through their fingers a first time as he left Clermont for the Scotland int'l team... but they're likely going to let that happen again: Wales have positioned themselves for his acquisition already, and you just have to bet France will actually snob him a second time, I mean, you can just see it.

It's insularity/pride/arrogance/suspicion. Anything that is "L'Etranger" is rejected. Or worse, in the glare of the light, it is shot...

Actually, I'm quite sympathetic to this when it comes to cultural things. Who wants le McDonalds either in the language or on the plate? However, the problem with rugby is twofold
- it's an intl game and unless you don't want to compete in anything other than T14 (invent a game like the yanks did with NFL or the Aussies with AFL and you can be kings in your own puddle forever), you have to deal with foreigners and, if they are better than you, the horror thought of adopting some of their filthy, foreign habits like training.

Salut à tous,

Meilleurs voeux, toussa toussa les gars.

Changing the staff, why not. The results are abyssimal. The way it's done is appalling, once again Laporte is a thug and he should be the first one out the door, the fact that a crook like him was in a position to sack someone like Novès is injustice at its highest level.

Anyway.

Brunel? un chic type, mais un entraîneur à l'ancienne. Typically the coach we don't need. What we needed is a young, modern foreign coach who would have launched a revolution in the way we approach the game. Typically a kiwi and all his staff.

I just cannot believe the choice is Brunel. And when I see his assistants, it gets even worse. Bonnaire has zero experience and JB Ellissalde has impressed no one as backs coach over here and worst, he now has a reputation of arrogance and of gettin along poorly with players.

Another disaster in the making.

Sur ce, bonne année

But why does the French Union adopt this attitude to coaches, when they allow a league to exist where there seems to be no such restriction on players ?

If all T14 teams decideded to hire Non-French qualified OHs, or Props, what's to stop them ?

It's speaking out of both sides of the mouth to; on the one hand complain about a lack of National success, & blame the coach; & on the other, do nothing to address the club side.

Cotter & Schmidt were able to exert control of players training & schedules in ways that no French of English coach would ever be able to.

Always been the case. Long before your time on here I reported as much from the experience of my friend who played at LaR with Elissalde. Somewhat ironically they remained friends but maybe easier to be his friend when you are not in the same team as him.

No but you don't understand. France are retarded. They're mentally retarded. I'm not being cute, funny etc. France ARE retarded.

- the game was invented by and is run by Anglos. It's their game played under their rules. When in Rome..... (lose?)

The foreign players are brought in
- partly as a quick fix driven by economic factors i.e. staying up or winning things
- and partly due to an inferiority complex

BUT do not mistake this as importing foreign culture/influences. Far more likely that the foreign players will adopt (be forced to adopt) Fre practices than be given leeway to bring about change or granted any key influence.

We obviously don't know the details in the background... but being sacked for "serious misconduct" which is "faute grave" in French law, is probably just another big bag of bullsh*t from Bernard the Crook.

And indeed it could cost the FFR dearly.

By which point J-BE had already joined ST.

Much as I think Noves is incompetent, I hope he takes Mackay and the FFR for every penny because
a) they appointed him
b) they are clearly trying to manipulate the law whilst besmirching Noves' reputation in areas that have nothing to do with his coaching skills

It will be pocket change compared to the 500/600 millions that camou and blanco wanted for Le grand stade in the middle of nowhere .
