Official expats food hankering Christmas purchases thread

Packets of these turned up today from Blighty:

Image

Post Christmas sandwiches are simply not right without a side of Brannigans taking the skin of your tongue with their absurd mustard content. I've also bought myself Jaffa Cakes (sadly not in yard form), and 'proper' Dairy Milk.

Are any of the other expats going out of their way to secure specific foodstuff to make their Christmas a bit more like they remember?

I don't know what the biggest travesty is - me agreeing with Ika on something or the lack of Salt and Vinegar chips in Europe.

Tip: "Agreeing with Ika" is not a big travesty. I'm going to let you in on a little secret here; that is, the majority of PR posters are fucking bonkers. I know they can be loud and attack en masse, but that doesn't make them right. The minute you see your views on virtually any subject imaginable starting to converge with "the average PR poster", that's the moment to check for travesties. Not when you "agree with Ika". Trust me.

Merry Christmas. :P :P

I’ve spent the day supposedly Christmas shopping with the missus in joberg. Buying Pimms, cocktail stuff, ribs for the brai... all a bit fcuking weird and we literally had a row when I put a Terry’s Chocolate orange in the trolley as a nod to my usual traditions at which point she called me a fat fcuk. Give me a proper cold Christmas at home in UK with family rows in front of the TV any day rather than the expat bollocks of sunshine and BBQs.

Oh, I would much rather be at home with friends and family but current personal and work circumstances render that impossible, unfortunately.

All of my childhood pals will be in our rural local this evening listening to the music session, supping lovely pints of stout at the table by the peat fire :(

I don't normally drink stout these days but you have me sold on the idea.

I've never been anywhere with more or seemingly nonsensical crisp flavours, it's true. Prawn cocktail is nice enough though. But JtB has this nailed with the Brannigan shout.

Cheese and Onion is the absolute worst. Ready salted is every shit 8th birthday party I ever went to. Salt and vinegar is the one true crisp.

The problem I have with Antipodean crisps/chips is that they lack a bit of punch. The flavours are invariably mild, even for supposedly strong flavoured crisps.

With the above mentioned crisps, I also bought a pack of these:

You just can't get crisps like the Brannigans ones, or something packing a lot of spice like the Chilli Heatwave ones, in NZ.

One of the lines of "kettle-fries" chips had a lot of flavour (particularly the Salt & Vinegar ones - tongue-burningly so). Not sure if they still do them though. But yes, most are pretty mild.

There is (or at least was) an ex-pat store somewhere on the North Shore which supposedly had a decent range of UK goods - driving there from up north would probably cost less than getting such things posted.

There's one in Walkworth and Orewa, but neither do those particular crisps. I do use those for standard British stuff we buy like Yorkshire Tea and British biscuits.

Also, Irish style stuffing.
Yanks/Canadians use big chunks of bread instead of crumbs.

The missus complains that mangoes that are sold in the UK/NZ are an affront to good mangoes.

You utter bastards.

I also miss the kiddy stuff. Rashuns, Grain Waves, Caramel chews.

Most of which you can get through that online store though

https://www.sanza.co.uk/New_Zealand_Food.asp

But, hot meat pies. I miss those the most.
