Nice or too pretentious?
Annual rugby : old versus young
I get a lot of complaints for not using the mother tongue but today I insist on using English. In particular because I read Hemingway’s The old man and the sea on December 31, which is probably the best preparation that a player from the old team in the annual old versus young at rugby club D. can have. Anyway, since I am going to quote from the Old man and the sea, in this report, just to see how that works out, I have to stick to the language.
Page 2: They sat on the Terrace and many of the fishermen made fun of the old man and he was not angry. Others, of the older fishermen, looked at him and were sad.
Cut of age used to be 30 but nowadays it is Tonnie’s 32 because frankly speaking, Tonnie is just too childish to play for old. Many others aren’t and when I looked around at some of D's most ugly faces possessed by the men I spend Tuesday and Thursday -evening with for basically every year in the nineties, it made me very happy. It is great. The front row sat together, of course, but it was hard to distinguish them from the centers. The wingers were talkative as always, the full back late, and one or two unexpected no-shows did come with rumours on heart attacks, divorces, new convictions and unpublishable other comments.
Page 4: There was no cast net and the boy remembered when they had sold it. But they went through this fiction every day. There was no pot of yellow rice and fish and the boy knew this too.
It is now not long before we go out and the pre-match hype is accompanied by new slogans. Relentless pressure reminds a flanker of his burn-out, for example. An unnamed back reaches for his Viagra when asked for a big performance. On team-spirit all forwards nod. Any spirit really.
Everybody is happy that we seem to skip the warm-up and bets are placed in which minute Marcel will dislocate his shoulder, Kliko will get a yellow card for talking and when anybody will punch Siem, the competitive hooker of young. When our backs run three or four lines everything goes wrong. We agree that’s not for us, say it went well, and tell the forwards to do some line-outs and take it seriously. Then we concentrate. 5 minutes later it is kick-of time.
Page 11: Only I have no luck anymore. But who knows? Maybe today. Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes you are ready.
Myself I get slightly worried as I see my son run the warm up at ten, which means he will be opposite of me.
Page 27: ‘I am not religious,’ he said. ‘ But I will say ten Our Fathers and ten Hail Marys that I should catch this fish, and I promise to make a pilgrimage to the Virgin de Cobre if I catch him. That is a promise’
The first half is just unbelievable. We click like the Harlem Globetrotters in the backs and the forwards can only be compared to great military victories in their dominant display and utter humiliation of the young-side. Halftime-score, nevertheless, is 12-7 in the advantage of young.
Page 45: ‘Be calm and strong, old man,’ he said.
I know I have promised to write a report in which old wins, but that was just to get free beer. In a very entertaining second half our old guys made serious inroads and we did score but our following visit to the young 22-area did not deliver any points. Then we had a bit of an awkward moment in the centers (I told you they looked like props) and some punk picked up the ball and scored. We fought back with great determination after that but the young team kept us out like seasoned pros and won the game.
Page 62: I have all these prayers I promised if I caught the fish, he thought. But I am too tired to say them now.
I suppose a club is healthy if the younger team wins and there certainly were some stand out performances in particular by Justin on 7 and Montell at 14. In the old team it was great to have Andre B. back and well, we never gave up, that was good. Of course it did not matter, but we will try again next year.
