Not a bad opening lyric either...

I was also born in a crossfire hurricane, incidentally
Paint It Black also one of the all-time greatest riffs.

10 out of 10 for getting that down in word format. Sorely underused, particularly by orchestral compositions.

The first one that springs to mind (and mostly because I was listening to it earlier today) is "Hellion/Electric Eye" by Judas Priest. Main "Electric Eye" riff kicks in at around 42 second mark, but the preceding "Hellion" intro riff shouldn't be skipped: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUCRFMZ-hiY

Not going to say "the best" as it is clearly subjective and impossible, but some greats riffs that haven't been mentioned yet...

Kashmir - Led Zep (probably my favourite. The other competitor being Immigrant Song that has already been mentioned)
Wearing and Tearing - Led Zep (a relatively obscure song as it is on the unloved Coda album).
Tie Your Mother Down - Queen
Thunderstruck - ACDC (easy to play wrongly, hard to play properly)

Layla is just horrible from the opening riff to the piano outro that goes on about 43 minutes too long. The start of Clapton's decline into middle of the road mediocrity.

In a nod to Clapton I give you Boogie Chillen.

I'm sure John Lee Hooker borrowed from earlier Delta bluesmen too, but there is something clean and hypnotic about his application of the electric guitar to a simple riff in his early Chicago days.

I could go on for days, so many amazing riffs.

But Layla electric has always been awful to my ears. Quite like Slowhand’s acoustic version.

Layla is fantastic, though I like it mostly for Duane Allman and the coda.

Clapton’s decline came much later IMO.

Electric version is alright but acoustic is the best.

Layla is a treble laden wank-a-thon. Never liked it. And while age and all the rest has allowed me to come round to music disliked in the past, It hasn’t helped Layla.

As said above, there’s just too many great riffs, from too many styles of gat music.

But this one is still on high rotate.

Allman never wanked you plum, I doubt he ever even touched his celestial penis.

My only problem with it is Clapton’s voice, he could never do justice to his strongest material

Clapton's decline can be pinpointed very precisely - when he stopped using Gibsons and started with the Strats.

I never knew that.

"Licks are usually associated with single-note melodic lines rather than chord progressions." I doubt that this is an accepted difference, but I usually envision a riff as an integral part of a song, often repeated multiple times throughout the song."

No love for Hendrix here?

I’m surprised neither Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) or Purple Haze got a mention.

Good point. A career in premium riffology.

In reality it’s hard to go past Jimmy Page in sheer volume of memorable, diverse riffage.

I’m sure I’ll be shot down for this but Royal Blood had some nice riffs on their first album.

Little Monster is simple but effective, particularly given that it’s played on the bass.
