Sabbath over Led Zep any day. Mainly as they weren’t riff/song title/lyric/total song stealing wit kant.

But we could all really go on for days as I said earlier. So many great riffs, from so many genres.

The opening of that song is stuck in my head.
And now mine you git! :x

:D
That riff was guitarist Joe Walsh's creation, he used it to warm up until the rest of the band heard him one day. That guy didn't know how good he was.

A5D5E5 wrote:Not going to say "the best" as it is clearly subjective and impossible, but some greats riffs that haven't been mentioned yet...

Kashmir - Led Zep (probably my favourite. The other competitor being Immigrant Song that has already been mentioned)
Wearing and Tearing - Led Zep (a relatively obscure song as it is on the unloved Coda album).
Tie Your Mother Down - Queen
Thunderstruck - ACDC (easy to play wrongly, hard to play properly)

Layla is just horrible from the opening riff to the piano outro that goes on about 43 minutes too long. The start of Clapton's decline into middle of the road mediocrity.
Yep, it's definitely subjective. I'd heard Kashmir many times not realising it was Kashmir but was always told how awesome it was, so got quite the surprise when I put two and two together - I think it tops my most overrated list.

On the not best, because of the subjective as you say, but a favourite of mine list is Cult of Personality - Living Colour.

For Whom the Bell Tolls. About 58 seconds in, when the noodling finishes. My personal greatest riff ever

The opening riff to Can’t You Hear Me Knocking is pure filth

https://youtu.be/3fa4HUiFJ6c

The central riff for The Damned - A New Rose is underrated

https://youtu.be/KPowvspa4BI

Queens of the Stone Age - Sick, Sick, Sick detuned riff at 55s in is great (written by Julian Casablancas I believe)

https://youtu.be/8EDePb-L7KA

Deftones - Korea, probably their most meatheaded riff ever and I love it

https://youtu.be/FHxf6FnY_w0

More of a simple rotating arpeggio from Keith Levene but I’m putting it in, PiL - Poptones (the live Grey Whistle Test has the best version)

https://youtu.be/b8e2CTB9oeQ

Los Lobos - Viking

Plenty Houts. I booked the Who to play at uni. A girlfriend of mine is the PA to PT. I took a few to the Teenage Cancer Trust gig at the Albert hall with backstage tickets.

The drummer was a certain Zac Starkey, Ringo's son. He is mustard. A propos of nothing

For bass fans .........

Give it away - Red Hot Chillipeppers - Flea

Love will tear us apart - Joy Division - Hook

Money - Pink Floyd - Waters

Under pressure - Queen & David Bowie - Deacon Another one bites the dust deserves a mention but I’m a massive Bowie fan so I had to choose

What would be very interesting to me is bass lines from the last decade?

Nope... Dale Crover played bass on that track.

Lori didn't actually play on the album despite being credited.
