True. Hilariously a few people on here were convinced Hillary had a better chance than Bernie. Deep down they know they were spectacularly wrong.
Bernie never got far enough into the election to have the GOP machine start digging dirt on him. True, he wouldn’t have had the emails, and he would have gone to Ohio, Pennsylvania, etc, but you’re fooling yourself if you think he would’ve had it any easier than Hillary did.

This should be a good thread in time...

Anyways, I posted this in September:
fonzeee wrote:Who else [is there besides Biden]? I was (and still am) a Bernie fan, but I wonder now if he's starting to outlive his usefulness. Kamala Harris is interesting but I'm not keen on electing another not-even-served-a-full-term senator. Cory Booker is a camera-hogging moron. Elizabeth Warren's too far left for the mainstream and a bit of a one-trick pony (perhaps a good choice as a VP attack dog, though). Sherrod Brown and Amy Klobuchar might have potential but they've yet to really put their hands up...
Still pretty much in the same place. The first five are the "front-runners", inasmuch as there can be any at this incredibly early stage. Maybe throw in Kirsten Gillibrand, for some reason. I need to learn a bit more about Dem governors/ex-governors, though, to be honest, none really come to mind (minus a truly ancient Jerry Brown, who would be 90 at the end of a second term). That said, Goeagles isn't the first Coloradoan I've seen say good things about Hickenlooper's governorship, so there is that.

I'm pulling for Sherrod Brown, in the interest of full disclosure. Strong on trade, strong on financial industry regulation, experienced but gravelly-voiced and disheveled enough to never be mistaken for an insider.

Just please, for the love of God, no celebrities or billionaires. Have we learned nothing?

Thanks for the heads up, perusing his website and a quick read of his bio, seems like the kind of candidate that most middle class Americans could get behind:
Since January of 2007, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown – a champion of middle-class families in the Senate – has held more than 300 community roundtables across Ohio’s 88 counties with students, local leaders and business owners, entrepreneurs and educators, workers and families to find ways to rebuild our economy.

Described as “Congress’ leading proponent of American manufacturing,” Brown supports a national manufacturing policy that would invest in manufacturing innovation, strengthen our component supply chain, connect workers with emerging industries, and align our trade policies to promote our national interests. He is also working with Ohio’s universities, entrepreneurs, and community stakeholders to use Ohio’s resources to create new jobs in high-growth industries and make Ohio a national leader in clean energy manufacturing.

And as a long-time advocate for fair trade, Senator Brown has stood up to presidents of both parties on shortsighted trade agreements that ship U.S. jobs overseas. He led the bipartisan opposition to NAFTA in 1993 – as a freshman in the U.S. House of Representatives – and to CAFTA in 2005. Sen. Brown is working on trade policies that promote our workers, small businesses, and manufacturers while creating jobs and expanding markets through an aggressive export promotion strategy.

Informed by his faith as a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), Sherrod Brown is committed to social and economic justice. He helped pass the historic health care law that will make health insurance more affordable and accessible for American families. This law also provides strong consumer protections that will prevent insurers from placing limits on the care patients receive and discriminating against consumers based on age or pre-existing health conditions.

He has also joined with officials and community partners in cities across Ohio to rise to the White House’s My Brother’s Keeper Challenge to expand opportunities for boys and young men of color. Through mentoring relationships and education events, this initiative strives to ensure that all of our young people receive a quality high school education and graduate with the skills and tools needed to advance to postsecondary education or training.

For the last several years, Senator Brown has also convened a one-of-its-kind Ohio College Presidents Conference in Washington to discuss ways to leverage federal resources to promote higher education and job training in Ohio.

Senator Brown serves as the Ranking Member of the Senate Banking Committee, where he played an instrumental role in passing the historic Wall Street reform law. He also serves on the Senate Committee on Finance.

Brown is also the first Ohio Senator in 40 years to serve on the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee, where he has been instrumental in strengthening the farm safety net and addressing childhood hunger. He served Chairman of the Subcommittee on Jobs, Rural Economic Growth and Energy Innovation.

Senator Brown has fought for our veterans, servicemembers, and their families throughout his career. He secured $15 million to build the Ohio Western Reserve Cemetery for veterans, in Medina County. From his position on the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, Brown has advocated for veterans training programs to ensure returning servicemembers have access to good-paying, high-demand jobs. He is the only Ohio Senator ever to serve a full Senate term on the Veterans Affairs Committee.

Prior to serving in the United States Senate, Brown served as a United States Representative for the 13th District, Ohio’s Secretary of State, a member of the Ohio General Assembly, and has taught in Ohio’s public schools and at The Ohio State University. An Eagle Scout, Brown is a native of Mansfield, Ohio, where he spent summers working on his family’s farm. He is married to Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Connie Schultz. They reside in Cleveland, Ohio, and have three daughters, a son, a daughter-in-law, three sons-in-law, and five grandchildren.

And, though I won't spend too much time on it, it is worth going over the 2016 election as we look on to 2020. Though I guess the fun question is, would Bernie have fared better than the Hilldawg?

Well, let's go to the map:

Image

Now, which of those states that Hillary won is Bernie realistically going to lose? Okay, I'll give you Nevada. Hell, throw in Colorado. But do you think any of those states on the coasts are going to go Republican? Hell no. The GOP could resurrect Abraham Lincoln and he would still lose every state on the West Coast by double digits.

Now give Bernie Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin (all Rust Belt states decided by <1%). I don't think too many are going to argue with that; those were races decided by trade and Bernie was obviously more credible on that front. Now all he had to do would be to flip Ohio OR Indiana, and he wins. Not as easy as the aforementioned three, since those are more socially conservative states (though don't let geography fool you, plenty of social conservatives in MI/WI), but people vote their pocketbooks, and once again, he understands what has led to these folks' ruin.

Or, he loses both Ohio and Indiana but still takes Colorado, and still wins.

I wouldn't bet my life on a Bernie victory, but long story short, I'm extremely, extremely, extremely confident he would have performed better than Hilldawg. Bernie eats into Trump's competitive advantage, Hillary doesn't. It's that simple.

 most reasonable post on this thread - one thing i'd say is that its amazing how much better we think Bernie would have done as a candidate after months of Trump/GOP throwing shit at Hillary (and none at Bernie). Trump was supposedly the anti establishment vote (although looking at the list of ex Goldman Sucks/Wall Street insiders he has would make you think otherwise) but Bernie really would have been the ultimate outsider President.

Bowens, how big an issue is that amongst politicians over there? Have deaths from fentanyl abuse cut the life expectancy average by 2 years or did I read that wrong. It's something I think I picked up on twitter.
A few are involved, not many. Sherrod is one of the more prominent voices.

Life expectancy continues to fall and is expected to again for the year 2017. Ohio has the second most fentanyl deaths in the nation.

Current death rate across the US for Fentanyl is 90. A DAY.
You can now get Narcan over the counter in Walmart apparently.
Every medical training course you can think of now includes an Opioid section, even the most simple courses like BASIC life support (BLS).

The first poll, released Wednesday by Morning Consult and Politico, found Winfrey trailing in hypothetical primary contests against former vice president Joe Biden (by 23 points) and against Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) (by nine points). Winfrey led Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) by just four points; she enjoyed a substantial, 21-point lead over only Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), who has the smallest national profile of the group.

Epic mantrum.
Of course, there will still be those voters who snarl, “She didn’t earn my vote,” as if somehow their narcissism should override all other considerations in the election. That, however, is not what an election is about. Voters are charged with choosing the best person to lead the country, not the one who appeals the most to their egos.
Got that right bro. And I will do it again in 2020 if need be. :smug:

It's so tiring hearing about votes for 3rd party candidates led to Trump winning. Clinton won the popular vote which negates that. She just ran a poor campaign. And was a poor candidate for a myriad reasons.

Assuming she's from the same Kennedy family. My gut feeling, based on nothing more that the American electorate rejecting Hillary and Jeb is that if she does run she'll get her arse handed to her.
And yeah, I realise Hilldag won the popular vote. She still lost though in places she could have/would have own.

She did a reasonable job as US Ambassador in Japan but was helped by the Japanese public's love affair with the Kennedy family. Her being a long-legged attractive blonde certainly helped her with the public here too.
