Date: 5 - 9 January

Teams

SA

(probable) 1 Dean Elgar, 2 Aiden Markram, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Faf du Plessis (capt), 5 AB de Villiers/Temba Bavuma 6 Quinton de Kock (wk), 7 Andile Phehlukwayo/Chris Morris, 8 Vernon Philander, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Dale Steyn/Morne Morkel, 11 Keshav Maharaj

India

(probable) 1 M Vijay, 2 Shikhar Dhawan/KL Rahul, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli (capt), 5 Ajinkya Rahane, 6 Rohit Sharma/Hardik Pandya, 7 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Mohammed Shami

Pitch and conditions (from cricinfo)

Quote:
To go with the grass, there are vertical cracks on the pitch, reminding one journalist of the 47 all out game here, but Philander said that pitch actually looked flatter than this and that at Newlands it was more about the overheads. If there is a north-westerly blowing, the ball moves around a lot more. If there is a cloud cover, things get difficult for the batsmen. Only the first and the fourth days of the Test are forecast to be cloudy and breezy.

Seems as if they will have a southerly-south easterly wind for the next three days

I was more interested from the POV of Starc & Co bowling on it in March.

But, as Mark Taylor says, 95% of the time you bat, the other 5% you think about putting them in, but then you bat anyway.

If it's cracking now it'll be worse on day 5. (Or probably more relevantly, day 3.)

That bounced before Kholi.

There is currently a drought on in Capetown.

While the pitch has obviously been watered, the surface will probably break up early.

Just the sort of conditions the Indians want for their spinners.

Our batting is not our longest suit and we are notoriously flakey as a batting side.

Faf doesn't really have the powers of concentration for a decent innings these days.

Which is strange really as he saved us with some marathon innings early in his test career.

That’s a dumb myth.

Very good recovery though. Thank fudge for AB.

270 - 300 1st innings here will be gold

I don't necessarily think it is a dumb myth.

There are plenty of occasions where bowling first puts you in a strong position: overhead conditions, weak batting (theirs or your own), etc.

However, you look a bit silly if you don't take significant early wickets.

In this case, if the track does break up as the drought suggests that it might, the Indian spinners will make things difficult for our batsmen. It was probably a toss that du Plessis would have preferred to lose.

As I type that, de Villiers goes.

126 for 4.

Shit.

Faf loses concentration and departs.

142 for 5.

At 142-5 I'd say they were doing ok.

Am I being whooshed?

It's a bridge reference. You play trumps in your longest suit.

Maharaj gets himself run out.

Jesus, we are trying desperately hard to give our wickets away.

I think it just goes to prove that easy games against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe don't really count as preparation; we definitely look badly undercooked.

I will reserve judgement until the Indians have a go on this track

We need to get over 300, which is seeming a long way off.

Yeah.

I don't think it will be as easy for them as Kohli seems to think.

Yeah.

I don't think it will be as easy for them as Kohli seems to think.

His reaction to the Faf dismissal was atrocious, and then lets not even start with the Indian Kevin Pietersen clone's send off.

Yes.

As I say, I have more faith in our bowling, than I do in our batting. The fact that we got to 286 was more in hope than expectation, but having got the runs I'm reasonably confident that we'll be able defend that.

What did Kohli do to Faf?

His behaviour in the India v Aus series was a disgrace. He scored less runs than Moeen has in the Ashes series and didn't even play in the final test.

Gave him a big send off.

Not in favour of send-offs myself, as it implies that you've waited until the batsman can't respond.

Players from any other country would cop a fine, suspension or a warning.

If the match referee actually did his job he would be accused of being racist by Indian board members, commentators and online trolls.
