I’m no aficionado of the scene, and I get why you may dislike it. But to me it was an era of music where we found our own voice and while nowhere near top 40, it stood alongside other underground scenes worldwide and has proven very influential amonsgst quality American musicians.

While it was dirgy and depressing, we’re talking poor student life in Dunedin in the 80s here, I find it infinitely more interesting and even more uplifting than the “chur bro, chur bro, chur” preachy, unoriginal bbq reggae that beset our country in the last 10-15 years. Now that’s music to hang yourself to.

Here’s an absolute Dunedin cracker. One of the finest pop/rock songs written anywhere on the planet.

https://youtu.be/urZKvcLzUQg

Haha, I was going to mention that one as being one of the stand outs.

I like the BBQ reggae, have never felt the need to hang myself to it, but I know a bunch of the musicians in that scene.

It's the unoriginality coupled with the preachy 'free your mind', 'the sun will shine down on you' lyrics. Total cunts.

And I know a few too, cousin's husband plays in the Black Seeds.

 You have waaaay more of a chip, than I have against Flying Nun.

Why is disliking something a chip? The only time I’ve really been insufferably surrounded by the shite is at a few festivals. A good gauge to keep it away from your ears is to avoid blokes who say ‘chur’. They’re quintessential Kiwiana kunts.

The 80's produced the finest in American underground music, and there was no finer than the Sun City Girls...

Their trilogy of LP's for Majorca is, in my humble opinion, the greatest trilogy of albums since the Jimi Hendrix Experince... unfortunately (for others) all three of these are long out of print:

Has this been put up?

Ride On Time - Black Box

I remember playing this at ridiculous volume at a disco. It was mental.

I still have a rare 12 inch of it (a record!) Hope the double entendre is appreciated.

Kerosene's a personal favourite when I'm in the mood. Remember hearing the inferior Pitchshifter version in the 90s as a teenager and working back to the original.

Atomizer is a cracking album

OK, as I've said to JKM before, I've never got NiN.

But kudos for the other 2. Saw Big Black's last UK live date at Hammersmith Clarendon in '87. Grinder possibly my fav: and own both package versions of Headache.

Ministry. So much to choose from. Maybe Jesus Built My Hotrod.

If you're metal by nature, then the 80's were too limited influence and technology wise ultimately. I suppose for some of the other styles it was a ripe decade. Anything from pop to alt/synth rock.

Here's some of the most catchy 80's music in a broad range I can think of that isn't overly played/rarer:

:?

The majority of "influence" in metal occurred during the 80s.

Most of the NWoBHM scene, speed metal (Fast as a Shark), first wave of black metal (Venom, Hellhammer, Bathory, Sodom), thrash, formation of both the Euro and US death metal scenes, early prog-metal, power metal etc.

There was more development and influence in the 80s than in any other decade.
