Madonna - Papa Don;t Preach - 1986 - great 80s pop https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G333Is7VPOg

Farley 'Jackmaster' Funk - Love Can't Turn Around 1986 - many people see this as the moment house music came to the UK https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDtbXxemnPw

I'm a 90s sort of guy myself, but there's some good shit from the 80s.

I was listening to some Smiths today - The Queen is Dead from 1986 really is a good album:

There is a light that never goes out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9Gf-f_hWpU
The boy with a thorn in his side: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdOHPjMzY8s

Other Smiths:

Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nxQLJmshak
What does it make: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZa8jHi1nkk
Heaven knows i'm miserable now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjPhzgxe3L0

the queen is dead is a classic album. absolutely. amazing music was made in the 80's, especially if you were into indie, alternative whatever you want to call it. the 90's alt rock explosion into the mainstream happened because of all the groundwork laid by bands from ramones, pistols etc to enable the 90's to happen like it did.

About 11 years old - no internet.

All I had was the catalogue lingerie section and the - back then at least - quite risqué antics of Madonna

Cool. Apparently Gerald handed his tape to a DJ playing in the Hacienda, the DJ put it on and the rest is history (If I'm not mixing that up with another track)

Classic pop:

Daryl Hall & John Oates - I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccenFp_3kq8

Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3j2NYZ8FKs

The Human League - Don't You Want Me

ABC - The Look Of Love

Spandau Ballet - True

There was something extraordinary about the times. I haven't yet read a good book on it, but there was certainly a final hurrah feel to it. I worked for a guy who was once the keyboardist in ABC. And my handyman in my flat in Islington was Tony Hadley's brother. Just how things were I guess.

I suppose someone might look back fondly on grime and drill 'artists', but they won't be you or me.

Not music, but there is no greater evocation of the 80s in Britain than Alan Hollinghurst's novel The Line of Beauty, even if it is only from one particular point of view: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2004/ ... llinghurst
