Enjoyed the men's luge. The policeman from Austria, Gleirscher, who nearly didn't make the team won gold, beating the favourite and double olympic gold medalist, German Felix Loch, into 5th place.

Image

Nice story too with the American Mazdzer's team consisting of "two parents, two sisters, his girlfriend and two buddies, who duly went ballistic at the finish-line terrace".

Matt Graham just took silver for Australia in Men's Moguls. The Canadian was just too good

Xupi, he was superb! I don't think he missed a shot either! 20/20 and romped home for the Gold.

I remember him in Sochi and he was magnificent again today.

Can anyone explain the Dutch expertise in speed skating? They are amazing!

Frozen canals for a simplistic answer.

Every Dutch kid learns to skate when young, it's the national sport after football, properly heavily financed by the Dutch government, Olympic committee and businesses, and with lots of university (engineering and sports science) backing.

Money talks, essentially.

I think he missed one in the first shootout, so he's scored 19/20. But dominated the others on the skis. Remarkable, because he only finished 8th in the 15km sprint yesterday after one disastrous shoot-out, and being able to step-up like in the pursuit the next day is a sign of an immense mental strength.

Very disappointed for Johannes Boe, the young Norwegian prodigee, who completely collapsed in those Olympics so far...

Field conditions quite extreme in South Korea, with very strong winds, ots of events have been deferred...

Hoping this can be seen outside of Canada. The CBC's science program did a fun ep having current top winter athletes have a go at old technology ... speed skater with 1960s skates and clothing, bobsledders with 1940s rig and gear, young and old champions swapping new and old tech in GS, paralympic sit-skier, current slap shot specialist trying to equal reported power of a legend's with old tech.

They started the men's super combined to finally kick off skiing. Apparently moved the start down due to the wind.

2 of the first 4 skiers fell.

I hope that when she does win gold the BBC will stop showing its video backstory of her every 10 minutes. Mind you, I suspect they will then replace it with a hagiography explaining how she has redeemed herself by winning, or some such nonsense.

Yeah, the BBC can really grate at times with their "DRAMA!". They feel exploitative of athletes at times. they give up their lives for a potentially life changing competition and end-up with Claire Balding sucking out their emotions like a vampire for "entertainment". If I was Christie I'd never want to hear or see the 2014 DQ's again until I had won an Olympic medal and laid it to rest. It would be helpful if the BBC was actually interested in the sports.

Christie crashes out. Still despite the hype this is her worst event and the start is so important. Her greater overall speed seems to reward her longer distances. So fingers crossed.

Sadly annoying bbc DRAMA will dominate further discussion.

Don’t know much about Elise Christie, but was a little surprised how emotional she got after today’s final. I was under the impression she had been working on the psychological side of things after the way things planned out in Sochi but in my humble opinion her emotional state doesn’t bode well for her remaining events. Hope I’m wrong.

I like all the snow stuff except the ones with jury marks, ice hockey, curling and short-track speed skating. Pretty good haul and proportionately a lot better than the summer olympics which is all shite except rugby and cycling.

Was gonna add ... rhythmic gym and trampoline, the various shooting sports where they have all sorts of aids, sailing, fancy horse riding, golf, and for the next one they've even added friggin' BMX freestyle, skateboarding, surfing, sport climbing (Like American Gladiator first to the top sort of thing???), and 3 on 3 basketball (love b-ball, me, but FFS!)

And dressage. "Make your horse look pretty ensure it does not dump its breakfast on the floor"

As for the Winter Olympics, snowboarding can feck off back to the X Games.

Was watching halfpipe last night, and I just realized I'm done watching snowboarders do tricks.

As far as the Summer Games, I'm leading the campaign to get rid of modern pentathlon. If removed from the Olympics, the sport would completely die. Therefore, it should not be in the Olympics.

From what I've read, the IOC have told the IAAF to drop some events, and walking is probably on the chopping block then.

To say the least! She was expressing suicidal thoughts in the BBC interview ffs. She was nowhere near a medal in the 500 and needs to sort here shit out pronto. I don't think she will.

Someone was DSQ and she fell a lap before the end. Her mental state is borderline sectioning

Aussie snowboarder Scotty James just secured Australia's second medal taking bronze in the halfpipe final. Shaun White took the Gold for the USA, and he sure deserved it

No choking, all three preformed well as far as I could tell. White was just too good and not much in it between Scotty and the silver medal dude.

If you haven't seen it, check out the American female luger's crash. Had to get x-rays done on her back, but everything came back fine.

Watched a lot of short track speedskating tonight, why don't they hold the match racing on the larger speedskating oval? It's entertaining, but holding it on the short track and the seemingly random referee decisions makes it all a bit of a lottery. If it's on the larger oval it gives more passing avenues with the longer straights. I know the long track has the free skate, which I've never seen. Maybe I'll try to catch it.

Apolo Ohno on commentary as the U.S. were in 4th out of 4 with a gap during the men's team relay: "This is going to be very difficult for the American team if they do not speed up." Well, no shit.

Russia-Norway bronze medal match in mixed doubles curling. Norway somehow made the bronze medal game based on that performance. Russia outworked them, were superior, and won.

Hockey and of course football,

Volleyball is also quite big and they've had some outstanding results in that,

Once the speed skating events are over I don't really expect the Dutch to add much to their medal collection.

What?

No he didn't choke. Shaun White is the Bradman of snowboarding and the young Japanese bloke will take that mantle.

Why would you want that. It's been a part of the Summer games since 1912 and is very much still an amateur sport.
