The Gupta raids is the most significant illustration of the political grip on policing and judicial powers ever since FW de Klerk.

Moeletsi Mbeki is not impressed. Says the ANC has compromised the Constitution.

Yes. Although CR had the power to get rid of Cabinet, already.

Now he can deploy new members, as he wishes.

I think there's 3 options with a MONC, but is it likely they'll go for just him or the cabinet? What's the EFFs motion?

Political analysts shared their views on the purpose of the action.

Dr Mzukisi Qobo‚ associate professor at the Pan-African Institute at the University of Johannesburg‚ says the raid is meant to send a powerful message to the statesman.

“It’s simply to say‚ the law enforcement will be unleashed on you. But I don’t think there should be much celebration‚ these institutions have been defective for too long. It will take time to repair the paralysis‚” Qobo said.

Political economist Moeletsi Mbeki suggested that the raid was political and not intended for the greater good.

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma put the final nail in President Jacob Zuma's political coffin.
NEWS 3 hours ago
“In their [ANC] eyes‚ their constitution overrides that of the country. If the Guptas are guilty‚ why have they not arrested them before? Why now? This shows disregard for the rule of law. The raid was not in the spirit of upholding the law but for political ends‚” Mbeki said.

Speaking on the planned recall of the president‚ Mbeki said Zuma was president by virtue of the constitution‚ not the ANC.

“The constitution is highly compromised in the ANC. Not just under the new boss‚ Cyril Ramaphosa‚ but under Zuma too.”

You'd think so, since the ANC doesn't want to give any sort of immunity to him. The jig is well and truly up.

Although, he could be completely deluded in thinking that everything that he did was fair, that the ANC (and the new SA) owed him a living for his time spent in prison and in exile. And sure wasn't everyone else on the take as well?

ANC cannot grant him immunity. That is a case for Parliament and the courts. Insofar as they can, according to the law and constitution.

The law and constitution he always judged himself above.

The NEC might have themselves to blame for his refusal to resign.

Zuma might actually have a point by asking "What have I done wrong?" - because the NEC never provided real reasons why he's being recalled. They side-stepped this question in the media briefing too yesterday, and I would guess it's because of so many other ministers (including the messenger, Ace) are also being investigated in the state capture report.

So they're basically telling JZ you're fired. But they do not say why (except for the flimsy excuse of 2 centers of power).

Now this may be a stupid question, but does the Labour Relations Act apply to MPs? The LRA only states it doesn't apply to the military, intelligence agencies, and secret service. How laughable would it be if JZ opens a case with the CCMA for unfair dismissal.

Another question, and this is purely hypothetical as I know it wouldn't happen even if it could, but: if the prez is let go through parliament, and parliament then have to elect a new prez, is there anything prohibiting a member of another party to be elected? Could say Julius or John Steenhuisen throw their names in the hat just for the lulz?

Different country, but in Ireland after an election each of the parliamentary parties usually nominate their party leader for Taoiseach (prime minister), and they usually garner the same votes as they have seats. Then they usually go into horse trading as there's usually no outright majority and they form coalitions, process happens again etc. Funny seeing some of the no-hopers nominated. Might be similar in SA.

They can vote any parliamentary member into the presidency. There was a DA candidate that was nominated to contest Kgalema Motlanthe. Could not remember his name.

Common practice, to nominate somebody from the opposition, in order to have a contest.

He's not speaking to us he's speaking to the ANC, the public are irrelevant to ANC thinking. His argument is he's done nothing wrong and there's no evidence of anything, so there's no basis for to resign, makes sense he can't implicate himself and say he's guilty of something. The ANC could easily not vote against him in a motion of no confidence, like the 8 previous times.

This shows why the ANC will never reform. Can't even get rid of one guy, and it's not one man they need to get rid of 40%+ of them supported his ex-wife over Ramaphosa. They can't really go after them using the courts etc either, as going down that rabbit hole will implicate probably most of them.

This is embarrassingly incompetent from the ANC, they now need the opposition to get rid of their own two term corrupt Prez. They can't even deal with their own guy.

I wonder how much of a difference this is going to make in 2019.

The two camps within the ANC and the organisation as a whole didn't come out of this looking too great.

And I'm sure the voters are starting to wake up to this.

I agree with him.

Rather funny how Terror Lekota, once one of the most hated people in SA, became a voice of reason (not only in this instance....he's one of few ANC cadres who showed moral leadership).

The dynamics of the political landscape is going to change considerably after next year's election.

What I don't like is how the EFF will, once again, be king-makers.

Hopefully more people will do the right thing and vote for Holomisa. He might get my vote too (I'm disillusioned by the DA).
