Didn't really like the last episode. That speech at the end was cringe and Escaped Sex Robot still has no backstory (the robot thing on the bridge...what the hell is it)

I think it's a series made for fans of the JJ Abrams movies. If you're an old school fan it has a lot of shortcomings. I personally stopped watching after 4 episodes. Much prefer the Expanse as a Sci Fi series.

Biggesg problem for me is timelines. This is supposed to be the original/prime universe, not Kelvin. So they've just encountered a ship purporting to be USS Enterprise, 10 years before the original series. Which is fine - after all this is the time of the pilot show and "The Menagerie". So why does the Enterprise look like it's fresh out of spacedock after the rebuild immediately prior to The Motion Picture?

Saw the 1st couple of episodes and was underwhelmed - haven't bothered since. No doubt I'll catch up with them later though - I'm a sucker for Sci Fi.

I enjoy 'The Orville' more.

I’m sorry but that’s utter nonsense .

This is as Trek as it gets !

It’s seriously what Roddenberry would have dreamt of .

It took at least 8 episodes to get together - but after the break did it what !

The expanse is ok - but not nearly as much fun.

What I do when I watch The Orville is to have a pillow. Everytime his face annoys me I smash the pillow a few times. Could work for you? The show itself is pretty good minus the face.

It's 100% not "as Trek as it gets" unless your idea of Trek is the same as Simon Pegg's. Not sure what kind of Trek you've been watching before. It tries to be dark and edgy because that's the Hollywood trend but it fails at being decent Sci Fi. Interstellar travel by way of mushroom drive and navigation by overgrown bug ... Sure. I want my science fiction to be a bit more plausible than that and most Trek is. Characters are not very likeable either. Couldn't care less about any of them.

I haven't watched much, but have been watching the old ones the last few months. "As Trek as it gets" would hit you with a big question pretty much every episode, and among those would be ones that reflect an issue going on in our current society (as great sci-fi does).

ST: TOS
ST: TNG
ST:DS9
STV
STE
STD.....STD

Oh and the series is pretty shitty, mostly because it obviously isn't set i the original timeline and because the characters you need to get behind are unlikeable or have no personality except to "create DRAMA".

When the most engaging character is acted by a man in a full face rubber mask you know you have a problem

Some of the middle episodes very poorly edited (speech not matching cut away shots)

Plot occasionally implausible (yes yes, I mean implausible even for the genre), e.g. L'Rell holds a trigger to a bomb, no mad Klingon takes a pot shot with a phaser;
or
Empress proposes blowing up Qu-onos
Federation agrees (!)
Federation makes Empress Capt of Discovery (! why?)
Burnham persuades Admiral this is Wrong (how did she ever make Admiral?)
Burhnham persuades Empress to give her the trigger (How did she ever make Empress?)

But on the whole i loved it.

So next series we have the following:
Empress loose in our universe
Lorca 1 loose in Terran universe (wasn't convinced by "oh he couldn't possible have survived narrative)
AND....we have Capt.Pike and a whole bunch of prequel to get through

Apart from the spore drive, it’s great. The Klingons in the first part of the series were klarse.

I just found the 'alternate universe' story arc a bit lazy. Star Trek writers seem to find comfort in 'parallel universes' and 'time travel' where cast members get to meet their good/evil counterparts.

The spore drive was a bit shite as well.

However if they ditch the spore drive and stay in the same Universe with the original time line it could be a great show. I'm watching out for personal pronouns atm.

You blokes [checks for gender stereotyping]

It's GOT to have time travel, alternate realities, prosthetics and impossible creatures else it's just Game of Thrones lite. Sci Fi has form, you know....

For some reason in hacks today's there is some sort of desire to do prequels and obsess about the brands history while disregarding the brands history, how else did Abraham's films descend into a really bad re-make of Wrath of Khan, a series supposed to be made entirely for newbies but whose entire relevation is dependent on having watched the classic series. Likewise with STD, why does the main character, who appears to have no Vulcan traits have to be strong armed to be Spock's sister to include Spock's dad who only hardcore fans could name. It's also the problem of "small universe building" when characters had to all connect in a way that makes no sense which makes the universe seem very small and unbelievable.

The other issue is if they were so desperate to move on from the technology of the original why not jut set-it after the old series? That gives you all sorts of continunity freedom as well. Instead they seem to get dragged into fan-fiction.

I'm by no means a hardcore Star Trek fan but I could name Sarek as Spocks father - He was a fairly important character in one of the movies (III?) after all

I agree with Sandstorm apart from the Spore drive nonsense I have enjoyed it but I have to laugh at the complaints about the realistic science of Star Trek being ruined by this. This is a franchise where warp drive and Matter Transporters have been common place FFS. Just because their communicators work a bit like mobile phones doesn't mean they were any great precursors of technological advances

I'm enjoying The Orville too. Both doing 'Space' far better than the pile of dog mess that Agents of Shield has become.

Season 3 is coming in March, I believe.

Very different feel to Star Trek. Much more like Firefly in the technology and slightly more realistic (for sci-fi) setting that they use.

star trek is just a bit too boring for me, it doesn't have any starfighters, giant superweapons with exhaust ports, ground attack Elephants that handily land far away and get to travel over extremely flat terrain, or chained birds in gold bikini's.

Bang on points. Trek fans would have had no problem going another generation forward, I feel.

Have you seen Prelude to Axanar? If you must do a prequel, why did they go with stuff that potentially messes up the timeline and not explore the infamous Garth and how he went from Federation hero to in a mental institution on a distant planet with a hot green lady (aka Batgirl) as his consort?

Started reading the books since watching the show, just finished the third book yesterday. There's definitely a backdrop of super alien species that are either far away in the stars or possibly even long-dead. Standard enough sci-fi tropes, but the main story is based on the human conflicts that arise out of exposure to seemingly alien technology like the protomolecule and how different parties try to exploit the situations.
The setting of humans having set up colonies on Mars and other moons and slowly expanding through the solar system is cool. There isn't too much far-out made up tech aside from the magic engine that allows them to travel fairly fast; you can get your head around the technology and trade economies that would arise out of that situation.
