Police in Parkland, Florida, are responding to reports of an active shooter at a local high school.

The Broward Sherriff's Office said it was "working a developing incident" at Stoneman Douglas High School.

"There are reports of victims," it added, warning that the shooter was still at large and urging people to avoid the area.

A local Fox news affiliate reported seeing several people being treated for injuries outside the school.

Helicopter video showed armed police at the building's perimeter.

Coral Springs Police department, meanwhile, tweeted instructions to teachers and students to "remain barricaded inside until police reach you".

Live video footage from the scene appeared to show a small number of students being evacuated.

Please amend the title with the correct number. The last one was #4462374 so this is shooting #4462375 not #34741

It'll be OK though. Thoughts and prayers will be sent by the thousands. Plus Trump has already tweeted about the tragedy so there are bound to be measures taken to prevent this from happening again.

Obviously a horrible tragedy for those affected by this but does an American mass shooting even deserve a thread of its own? Merge it with the other one(s)

@realDonaldTrump

My prayers and condolences to the families of the victims of the terrible Florida shooting. No child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school.
Looks like he's going to get serious about it at last.

Maybe he'll build a bunch of American schools in Canada?

Probably just build a wall aground them all

Excellent point, Flagg. It should have "Official" in the title. Should we differentiate schools shooting, from workplace, from bar shootings and other public places, with separate threads so that the comments can be more nuanced, or should they just be lumped them altogether?

Yes. Every school/mass shooting deserves it's own thread. What a tragedy. :((

Say 14 victims , hopefully injured not fatal

Apparently shooter pulled fire alarm so students leave the classrooms and then start shooing

how anyone, anywhere, in a society sporting a quarter of a billion weapons suffering from a plague-like spread of attention-seeking entitlement, can feel safe, is quite beyond me

... unless of course you have a gun... or better yet, lots of guns... then you're fine

Yep. statistically that is only three threads a week for school shootings

A friend of mine is a teacher at a school in NJ: apparently they had a meeting a couple of years ago about revising the protocols in the event of a mass shooting. They were all introduced after Columbine, meaning that the current generation of potential attackers had all grown up with those drills, and would know where students would be told to hide and could plan accordingly to kill as many as possible.

The fact that kids of kindergarten age have to be drilled in what to do in the event of a shooting, and this is, to some at least, preferable to regulating the sale of deadly weapons, will never fail to amaze me, no matter how long I live in America.

I'm with you on not understanding the mindset

My 13 year old son was getting snapcat videos from friends while this was happening today.

I texted my wife to let her know about the shooting and she knew because he had told her as it was happening

Yet it seems to be accepted as normal

From the Grauniad:

In all, guns have been fired on school property in America at least 18 times this year, according to incidents tracked by Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun control group. In eight of these cases, a gun was fired on school property, but no one was injured. Another two incidents were gun suicides, claiming the lives of one student and one adult on school property.

Depends where you go in the USA to be fair: you wouldn't get much argument against gun control here in Boston MA. The USA is several wildly different countries rolled up into one, and this is one issue where that really does show.

I don't doubt it - even here, in the liberal bubble, I am sometimes floored by people's views, including those of people I consider to be decent and intelligent.

gun lobbyists have done such a brilliant job aligning second amendment rights with 'freedom' that any federal government who now seriously challenges gun ownership will fracture the country...

perhaps even provoking serious secession calls from a few states...

the game's up: too many weapons are in circulation and too many people are entrenched in the belief that gun ownership is the sole bastion of self-determination...

More chance to be 'famous' that suicide or death by cop if that's part of the psychotic motive.

Within the first few weeks at my new school I was walking to the office and saw two cops enter with assault rifles. Everyone in the office was super calm and looked confused, so I didn't bother rushing back to the library to put in place a lockdown. Turns out the cops were called but there was some mis-com on why they were needed / how serious the incident was (just needed to take someone into custody, no weapon, was the scuttlebutt ... but it was re-assuring to know they could come in ready for action in just a few mins).

Even though this sort of thing is extremely rare in Canada, we've got all the procedures too and there are various stages. Elementary school I work at had a 'hold and secure' when a little guy was having a major meltdown, kicking in windows. Teacher had me look after a bunch of students the other day, removing them from the class for their safety, when a special needs kick took a swing at her.

It's reassuring to know that there are procedures in place and that periodic drills / meetings remind us what to do if something really bad were to happen. I'm only just getting back into education, but it seems the potential has risen for so many reasons compared to 15 years ago.

Well Remington going bust suggests that the US might have reached, 'Peak Gun'; or else the gun trade is now like the US Auto trade, & the Chinese imports are now going to eat their lunch.

I spent a year in an American college on an exchange programme and everyone was on some sort of upper/downer/concentration drug.
Mix that with recreational drugs, booze and easy access to guns and its always going to cause trouble.
The shootings are the symptoms of a sick soicety unfortunately. Does anyone remember whether gun attacks happened 20-30 years ago before the pharma companies started pushing drugs on TV?

Gun sales drop when there is a republican gov as the chance of a ban is thought to be less than under a democratic administration

To be fair, it's not the quantity of the guns that is necessarily the problem, but the types of weapons that are available, the laws that they and their owners operate under and the general shitty attitude of the populace, including the businesses that manufacture and deal in arms, the politicians that the manufacturers and dealers support and, dare we say it, several churches and their adherents.

I also think it's part of people's mental health in general in conjunction to the (failed) promise of the American Dream. It's a big stretch, but we're not much different than them (lots of guns, everyday I hear about a kid's 'meds', not the greatest system for helping people with mental health issues). Far, far, far, far fewer incidents per capita.

The major difference seems to be something in 'our' mentalities. I heard an interview not too long ago where someone suggested - and it could be totally BS, but it's an interesting thought - that over time the ones who stayed in the US were those who cherished their personal freedom over joining the collective (who migrated north), and their right to chase their dreams, and be someone special. Not all, of course, and we'll have some of those two, but think about all of that "you can do anything if you put your mind to it", "rags to riches", celebrity worship crap they grow up with. Then you and consider those who have serious mental issues suddenly realising it's a lie and that the only way they can get famous is to go out like those other shooters who then become 'celebrities' because of the way the media dives into these things.
